KEY GAME INFORMATION
N CAROLINA: Last season: 26-11, reached second round of NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Tar Heels.
Coach: Roy Williams.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: The program has lost mainstays from its 2017 national championship winner in point guard Joel Berry II ' a former Final Four most outstanding player ' and swingman Theo Pinson.
Who's back: Forward Luke Maye followed his last-second shot to beat Kentucky in the 2017 NCAA Elite Eight with a star-turning junior season, averaging 16.9 points and 10.1 points to be an Associated Press third-team All-American. He's now a preseason AP All-American and picked as ACC player of the year. Starters Cameron Johnson (12.4 points) and Kenny Williams (11.4) are back on the perimeter, which also has junior point guard Seventh Woods competing to take Berry's job. There's also a rotation of serviceable big men, led by sophomores Garrison Brooks and Sterling Manley.
Who's new: The Tar Heels have their best recruiting class in years, perhaps not coincidentally as they emerge from years of uncertainty due to a now-resolved NCAA academic case. Wing Nassir Little is the kind of five-star McDonald's All-American and possible one-and-done talent that shunned the Tar Heels in recent years. There's another McDonald's All-American in Coby White, an top-25 national recruit who will compete to be the new point guard after setting a North Carolina state scoring record with more than 3,500 points in high school. And the 6-foot-7 Rechon "Leaky" Black brings size and versatility to the perimeter.
The Skinny: There's no questioning talent and scoring potential on a team with Maye, Johnson and Williams joined by the touted rookie class. There are two main questions here: the Tar Heels need White or Woods to play well at the point with Berry gone, and that revolving door of big men needs to provide some interior toughness that was lacking at times as UNC leaned heavily on a small-ball lineup last year. If the eighth-ranked Tar Heels resolve both issues, this is a Final Four contender.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have UNC at 10-to-1 to win it all, tied with Villanova for the fifth-best odds nationally.
DUKE: Last season: 29-8, lost to Kansas in the Elite Eight.
Nickname: Blue Devils.
Coach: Mike Krzyzewski.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: All five starters. Big men Marvin Bagley III and Wendell Carter Jr., and guards Grayson Allen, Gary Trent Jr. and Trevon Duval are all in the NBA.
Who's back: Not much. Center Marques Bolden, the team's leading returning scorer, averaged 3.9 points in less than 13 minutes per game while Javin Delaurier is the top returning rebounder at 4.0 rpg.
Who's new: The Blue Devils brought in the consensus No. 1 recruiting class and four of its members are expected to start. They're led by Canadian guard and preseason AP All-American R.J. Barrett and athletic freak Zion Williamson ' who at 6-foot-7 and 285 pounds has filled YouTube with highlight-reel dunks. Point guard Tre Jones is the younger brother of Tyus Jones, the most outstanding player at the 2015 Final Four for Duke.
The Skinny: It's title-or-bust again for Duke's latest crop of players with the potential to jump to the NBA after only one season in college. Krzyzewski has installed an offensive system that depends on the players' versatility and their court sense to make intelligent reads and decisions. That system helped the Golden State Warriors become an NBA dynasty, and Krzyzewski hopes it works as well with his talented group.
Expectations: The Blue Devils are favorites to win the NCAA Tournament at 5-to-1, according to Las Vegas oddsmakers.
PREVIEW
Rivals ready for battle as No. 8 North Carolina visits No. 1 Duke

Another big game ought to fit right in for top-ranked Duke and all its heralded freshmen.

No. 8 North Carolina knows this drill as well.

The rivals meet for the first time this season Wednesday night at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium.

"Hopefully they play as well as they have in the other big games that we've had," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said of his players. "They're talented and they're very mature and they're all about 'team.'"

This is the 46th time the teams have met with both sides holding spots in the top 10. Duke leads those meetings 23-22.

This week, Duke (23-2, 11-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) moved back into the No. 1 spot in the country for the third time this season, most recently after then-No. 1 Tennessee lost on Saturday. The Blue Devils hold a one-game lead in the ACC on North Carolina (20-5, 10-2), with Virginia in between them.

"We have an opportunity to go over there and see how we stand up," North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. "In my opinion, we have to play our best basketball of the year to have a chance against Duke. This is a different kind of challenge than we've faced all year."

Duke freshman forward RJ Barrett posted a triple-double in Saturday's victory against North Carolina State. Barrett leads the ACC in scoring at 22.7 points per game, just ahead of classmate and teammate Zion Williamson (22.4).

Williams said he's impressed with the Duke freshmen, the only negative regarding Williamson being that "he chose not to come here." So, there's glowing praise.

"Zion Williamson is a different bird," Williams said. "There has never been anybody like that."

North Carolina has three seniors in the starting lineup, so there's a veteran element arriving with the visiting team.

"Not let the other stuff and hype around it get to us," Tar Heels guard Cameron Johnson said.

The Tar Heels are 6-0 in ACC road games this season.

"We have to come out and play as well as we can," North Carolina forward Luke Maye said. "It's a tough road game, but we've played well on the road this year."

For Duke freshmen, this might be the only home game against North Carolina in their careers if they leave for the NBA. While it's worth savoring, there's also an element of perspective.

"For us, it'll be pretty normal," Duke freshman point guard Tre Jones said of the preparation. "We still have some ACC games left, so it's not like this is the last game of the year."

But it's a matchup that receives so much attention that it's difficult to ignore.

"I'm pretty pumped," Barrett said. "It's a game, as a kid, I was watching all the time. Just to be a part of it is going to be a lot of fun."

North Carolina has a freshman factor as well with point guard Coby White, who has been dynamic at times.

"We're coming to compete," White said. "We're not going to back down from nobody."

Duke holds the No. 1 ranking for a matchup with the Tar Heels for the first time in 13 years. This is the 149th consecutive meeting with at least one of the teams ranked.
