KEY GAME INFORMATION
MARYLAND: Last season: 19-13, missed NCAA Tournament first time in four years.
Nickname: Terrapins.
Coach: Mark Turgeon.
Conference: Big Ten.
Who's gone: Forward Kevin Huerter (NBA), forward Justin Jackson (NBA), center Michal Cekovsky.
Who's back: Sophomore Bruno Fernando, a 6-foot-10 center, averaged 10.3 and 6.5 rebounds to land on the Big Ten All-Freshman team. Junior guard Anthony Cowan Jr., a two-year starter, will run the offense and was the team's leading scorer last season with 15.8 ppg. Guard Darryl Morsell started 21 games last year, averaging 8.7 points and a team-high 1.8 offensive rebounds. Forward Ivan Bender played in 15 games before a season-ending knee injury on Dec. 29.
Who's new: Freshman center Jalen Smith should be an immediate contributor. Averaged 17.9 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for Mt. Saint Joseph High in Baltimore. ... Guard Serrel Smith Jr. averaged 29.3 points and five rebounds as a senior at St. Petersburg High in Florida. ... Freshmen Trace Ramsey (6-7) and Ricky Lindo Jr. (6-8) provide height off the bench.
The Skinny: Fielding the youngest squad since he arrived at Maryland in 2011, Turgeon expects a return trip to the NCAA Tournament despite having only one scholarship senior (Bender). Jalen Smith and Fernando gives the Terrapins a formidable front court, and Cowan will have plenty of passing options when he's not taking the shot himself from the outside.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Maryland a 120-1 longshot to win the NCAA Tournament, same as Wisconsin from the Big Ten but far behind conference co-favorites Michigan and Michigan State at 35-1.
MICHIGAN ST: Last season: 30-5, won Big Ten title and lost in second round of NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Spartans.
Coach: Tom Izzo.
Conference: Big Ten.
Who's gone: Miles Bridges (NBA), Jaren Jackson (NBA), Tum Tum Nairn, Gavin Schilling, Ben Carter.
Who's back: Nick Ward entered his name in the NBA draft before deciding to stay in school for his junior season. The 6-foot-9, 245-pound forward ranked third on the team last season with 12.4 points and first with 7.1 rebounds. Junior point guard Cassius Winston trailed only Bridges in scoring, averaging 12.6 points a game, made a Big Ten-best 49.7 percent of his 3-point shots and had a team-high 6.9 assists per game. Junior shooting guard Joshua Langford averaged 11.7 points and showed the potential to do more, including his 23-point performance against North Carolina.
Who's new: Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo said at least two freshmen will play right away: Aaron Henry, a 6-6, 210-pound forward, and Foster Loyer, a 6-foot point guard.
The Skinny: The Spartans are No. 10 in the preseason poll because they have a lot of experience, which they hope will help the program advance past the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015 when Izzo reached his seventh Final Four.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Michigan State as a 35-1 shot win the NCAA Tournament, odds that are tied with rival Michigan and trail 11 schools.
PREVIEW
No. 6 Michigan State, No. 19 Maryland clash in key Big Ten game

Tom Izzo was a happy guy on Thursday night.

His sixth-ranked Michigan State team had just earned a tough road win over Nebraska, its fourth straight away from home and 11th in a row overall.

It kept the Spartans (16-2, 7-0) atop the Big Ten standings, a feat made even more noteworthy considering they have been without junior guards Joshua Langford (ankle) and Kyle Ahrens (back) -- Langford for five games and Ahrens for two.

But it didn't take Izzo long for the reality of life in the Big Ten to offer a smack in the face.

"I'm gonna take the win; I'm gonna enjoy the win," Izzo said. "All we got now is Maryland coming up."

Izzo smiled then offered a quick shake of head. Nope, there are no breaks, especially with the Terrapins coming to town Monday at the Breslin Center.

With all the talk of Michigan and Michigan State being the class of the conference, No. 19 Maryland (16-3, 7-1 Big Ten) has been playing well and sits one game behind Michigan State. Friday's 75-61 victory at Ohio State was the seventh straight for the Terrapins and the third consecutive win away from home.

Not bad for a young team that was picked to finish in the bottom half of the Big Ten. That is hardly the focus right now for the Terps, however.

"We're not even talking about it," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said.

"I told our guys, 'Whatever you do, don't look at our record, don't listen to people saying you're this and that.' This league's too good. This league's terrific and we're just trying to get better. So, I'm really proud of our team.

"Our guys just gotta stay even-keeled and we've just gotta keep trying to get better."

Maryland has vaulted near the top of a conference race that is starting to offer some clarity. Michigan State is the only unbeaten team remaining, with Michigan and Maryland sitting one game back with a loss each. Purdue has two losses. Every other team has at least three defeats.

While the halfway point has yet to arrive, it's obvious the Spartans-Terrapins matchup qualifies as a big one when it comes to the Big Ten race.

And while Maryland is rolling, it's not quite to the level yet of Michigan State, which hasn't lost since falling in overtime at Louisville in late November. Games have rarely been close since then, the six-point victory at Nebraska being the tightest.

That win highlighted Michigan State's success on the road, something the Spartans will try to continue after Monday's pit stop at home with the next two at Iowa and at Purdue. And they're doing it while relying on youth with Langford and Ahrens out.

"It was probably one of the bigger wins on the road under the circumstances of those freshmen having to play minutes in a tough environment," Izzo said. "That place was rocking as loud as I've ever heard a place lately, and we found a way to win."
