KEY GAME INFORMATION
CINCINNATI: Last season: 31-5, reached second round of NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Bearcats.
Coach: Mick Cronin.
Conference: American Athletic.
Who's gone: Guard Jacob Evans III (NBA), forward Gary Clark, forward Kyle Washington.
Who's back: Junior guard Jarron Cumberland, the top returning scorer at 11.5 points per game, leads a roster that will rely heavily on perimeter play. Senior point guards Cane Broome (7.9 ppg) and Justin Jennifer (4.8) are counted on for leadership and more points. The Bearcats' front line is undergoing a major overhaul as it tries to replace Clark ' the Bearcats' best player who averaged 12.9 points and 8.7 rebounds ' and Washington, who averaged 11.3 points and 5.5 rebounds. Junior forward Tre Scott (3.1 ppg) is expected to move into a bigger role, along with sophomore Eliel Nsoseme (0.9).
Who's new: Swingman Rashawn Fredericks is expected to contribute right away as a transfer from Motlow State Community College in Tennessee. Freshman forward LaQuill Hardnett averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists at Perry Hall High School in Philadelphia. Freshman guard Logan Johnson averaged 22 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists at St. Francis High School in California. How quickly they learn to fit Cincinnati's defensive schemes will determine how much they play.
The Skinny: Cincinnati had its best team under Cronin, winning the conference and going 15-1 at Northern Kentucky University while its on-campus arena was renovated and finishing No. 6 in the AP poll. The Bearcats blew a 22-point lead with 11 minutes left and lost to Nevada in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, matching the second-biggest meltdown in tournament history. They're always a defense-oriented team. Their biggest question is whether they can score enough with Evans ' their top scorer ' and Clark gone.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers give Cincinnati an 85-1 shot at winning the NCAA Tournament, the same as Ohio State ' the opponent that opens their renovated arena on Nov. 7. They and Wichita State are expected to compete for the AAC title again.
MISSISSIPPI ST: Last season: 25-12, lost 75-60 to Penn State in the semifinals of the NIT.
Nickname: Bulldogs
Coach: Ben Howland
Conference: Southeastern
Who's gone: Guard Eli Wright (transfer), guard/forward Xavian Stapleton (transfer)
Who's back: The Bulldogs return a huge chunk of their production from last season, including their top six scores. Senior guard Quinndary Weatherspoon is back after leading the team with 14.4 points per game. Other guards include Nick Weatherspoon (10.8 ppg), Lamar Peters (9.6 ppg) and Tyson Carter (8.9 ppg). In the frontcourt, Aric Holman averaged 10.9 points and 6.7 rebounds last season while Abdul Ado averaged 7.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and nearly two blocks.
Who's new: The Bulldogs have a trio of freshmen who will likely get immediate playing time, including McDonald's All-American forward Reggie Perry, and guards D.J. Stewart and Robert Woodard.
The Skinny: Howland has built Mississippi State into an SEC contender over four seasons. The Bulldogs have a lot of talent, and if they can improve their outside shooting, should have a shot to win just about every game.
Expectations: The Bulldogs were picked fourth in the SEC preseason poll by the league's media and are widely expected to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009. Las Vegas has Mississippi State's odds of winning a national title at 120/1, which obviously isn't great, but it's a lot better than recent seasons.
PREVIEW
Cincinnati hopes to beat No. 18 Mississippi State again

No. 18 Mississippi State will try to show improvement as a ranked team while Cincinnati is trying to show it belongs in the AP Top 25.

They meet Saturday at Mississippi State.

Cincinnati has yet to crack the top 25 this season despite a 9-1 record. Mississippi State is 8-1 coming off an impressive 82-71 win last week over Clemson on a neutral court in Newark, N.J.

The Bulldogs, who shot 19 of 30 from 3-point range in the win over Clemson, feature five starters averaging in double figures.

"Their stats from the last five games are making me rethink the game schedule," Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin said. "It's unbelievable. Their whole team is shooting 43 percent (from beyond the arc) in their last five (games). We haven't seen that since Notre Dame in the Big East."

Mississippi State guard Lamar Peters went 8 for 11 from 3-point range against Clemson. The team's 19 made field goals from that range against Clemson were also a school record.

"What I'm really proud of and excited for Lamar is what great leadership he's showing," Mississippi State coach Ben Howland said. "He's the voice out there. He's the voice in the locker room. He has that swag and ability to talk, and those guys all believe in him."

Cronin mentioned that Peters and the Bulldogs "present a lot of problems for us."

"They've got a lot of guys, Lamar Peters is just one of them," Cronin said. "Both the Weatherspoons (Quinndary and Nick), Aric Holman's a tremendous shooter (he's) probably the best shooting big man in the country. They'll put a lot of pressure on our defense. They've got guys that do everything, shoot threes, drive to the basket. They really play with two point guards at all times. They really present a lot of problems for us."

Cincinnati defeated Mississippi State 65-50 last year. Peters went 0 for 11 in that game, including 0 for 7 on 3-pointers.

Cincinnati senior guard Justin Jenifer had seven points and nine assists in the 62-47 win over Xavier last week. He leads the Bearcats in 3-point percentage at 45.8. Jenifer leads the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio with 39 assists and only five turnovers while averaging 23.6 minutes a game.

"Since I've been here Coach has instilled that taking care of the ball is the biggest key for me being on the floor," Jenifer said. "A lot of the long nights and early mornings we've had in the summertime pays off."

While Cincinnati won handily last year, the Bearcats are missing players that produced 49 of their 65 points as Jacob Evans III had 24, Kyle Washington 16 and Gary Clark added 9 points and plus 13 rebounds. That's two NBA players and another who is playing professionally overseas.

Peters was picked up co-SEC Player of the Week honors on Monday for his performances against McNeese State and Clemson. He averaged 27.5 points, five assists and eight 3-pointers made per game in those games.
