PREVIEW
Old rivals face off again as D-backs go for sweep of Giants

Former college rivals Luke Weaver and Shaun Anderson will go head-to-head for the first time when the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks attempt to sweep the San Francisco Giants in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon.

After losing two of three at home to the Giants last weekend and three straight in San Diego before heading north to San Francisco, the Diamondbacks have demolished Giants pitching for 28 runs and 34 hits in 18-2 and 10-4 wins to open this series.

Weaver (3-3, 3.14 ERA) will look to make it three straight against an opponent he has dominated in his budding career.

The right-hander has faced the Giants three times -- always in San Francisco -- and gone 2-1 with a 2.04 ERA.

Current Giants have hit just .184 in their careers against Weaver, and the only member of the San Francisco roster ever to homer against him is Madison Bumgarner, who is not scheduled to pitch on Sunday.

Chances are Weaver will see an unfamiliar opponent as the Giants promoted outfielder Mike Yastrzemski from Triple-A on Saturday.

The grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski went 0-for-3 in his major league debut, but did manage to score his first run after getting hit by a pitch in the seventh inning.

"It's a lifelong dream to be here, and to finally step foot in a big-league clubhouse is something special," the younger Yastrzemski gushed to reporters before the game, noting that his famous grandfather would not be attending the debut or series.

"He's not much of a traveler," the 28-year-old noted.

Weaver's catcher Sunday likely will be Carson Kelly, who has been behind the plate for all of the 25-year-old's 10 starts this season. It surely won't be John Ryan Murphy, who was designated for assignment Saturday so that the club could promote right-hander Taylor Clarke to start the 10-4 win.

The Diamondbacks had been carrying three catchers, which helped contribute to the fact that Kelly had started just 21 of the team's first 52 games.

"That's a strong part of this equation," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo explained to reporters of the desire to get Kelly more playing time. "More recently we've been more and more impressed with his ability to control the game from behind the plate."

Weaver has worked well with Kelly, having allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last nine starts. He's gone just 1-2 in May despite giving up just seven earned runs in 26 innings (2.42 ERA).

Weaver's pitching counterpart will be fellow Florida native Anderson (0-0, 3.60), whose three-year college career at Florida overlapped Weaver's three years at Florida State by one season.

The Gators swept all three meetings in 2014, although neither Weaver nor Anderson pitched in those non-conference games.

Anderson will be seeking his first major league win after getting no-decisions in a pair of 4-3 Giants wins in his first two starts. The left-hander allowed just two earned runs in each game.

The Giants will be closing a seven-game homestand in which they've lost five of six. They are assured of their fourth straight non-winning homestand this season.
