Rotation: RH Zack Greinke (13-7, 4.37 ERA), RH Taijuan Walker (8-11, 4.22), LH Robbie Ray (8-15, 4.90), LH Patrick Corbin (5-13, 5.15), RH Shelby Miller (3-12, 6.15)
Key relievers: RH Fernando Rodney (2-4, 3.44, 25/28 SV with Padres and Marlins), RH Jake Barrett (1-2, 3.49), RH Randall Delgado (5-2, 4.44), LH Andrew Chafin (0-1, 6.75), RH Kevin Jepsen (2-6, 5.98, 7/11 SV with Twins and Rays), RH Tom Wilhelmsen (2-4, 6.80 with Rangers and Mariners)
Hot spots: Rotation and catcher. The Diamondbacks' rotation was atrocious in 2016, ranking 29th in MLB in ERA. But hey, maybe it wasn't all their fault. In his first year as general manager, Mike Hazen installed a 'pitching strategist' (Dan Haren) and three new catchers (former Angels Iannetta, Mathis and Hank Conger). Meanwhile, nine of the 10 pitchers who started a game for the Diamondbacks last year remain in the organization. It's a bold experiment in how to fix a pitching staff. Iannetta and Mathis can frame all the borderline pitches they want. At some point, the onus will fall on Greinke, Ray, Miller, Corbin and newcomer Walker to perform to their potential.
Outlook: It wasn't long ago that Arizona spent $206 million to coax Greinke to defect from the Dodgers. Now the Diamondbacks feel like a team on the brink of a complete rebuild. Even without Jean Segura, who led the National League in hits, the lineup will score enough to keep Arizona competitive. But what to make of the pitching staff? The rotation beyond Greinke could be anywhere from awesome to abysmal. The ninth inning belongs to 39-year-old Rodney and, if he fails, a who's-who list of failed former closers: Wilhelmsen, Jepsen or J.J. Hoover. The farm system is in poor shape. If things get worse before they get better, Greinke could be the first player traded.
ST LOUIS: 2016: 86-76, second place
Manager: Mike Matheny (sixth season)
Who's new? OF Dexter Fowler, C Eric Fryer, LH Brett Cecil
Who's gone? 1B Brandon Moss, OF Matt Holliday, OF Jeremy Hazelbaker, RHP Jaime Garcia, RHP Seth Maness, RHP Jerome Williams
Projected lineup: CF Dexter Fowler (.276, 13 HR, 48 RBI, 13 SB with Cubs), SS Aledmys Diaz (.300, 17, 65), 1B Matt Carpenter (.271, 21, 68), RF Stephen Piscotty (.273, 22, 85), C Yadier Molina (.307, 8, 58), 3B Jedd Gyorko (.243, 30, 59), 2B Kolten Wong (.240, 5, 23), LF Randal Grichuk (.240, 24, 68)
Rotation: RH Carlos Martinez (16-9, 3.04 ERA), RH Adam Wainwright (13-9, 4.62), RH Mike Leake (9-12, 4.69), RH Michael Wacha (7-7, 5.09), RH Lance Lynn (did not pitch - Tommy John surgery)
Key relievers: RH Seung-hwan Oh (6-3, 1.92 ERA 19/23 SV), LH Kevin Siegrist (6-3, 2.77), RH Trevor Rosenthal (2-4, 4.46, 14/18 SV), LH Brett Cecil (1-7, 3.93 with Blue Jays), RH Jonathan Broxton (4-2, 4.30), RH Matt Bowman (2-5, 3.46), RH Miguel Socolovich (1-0, 2.00)
Hot spots: Rotation. The back end looked like a big leap of faith when spring training began. Wainwright and Wacha are coming off their worst seasons. Another 2013 World Series mainstay, Lynn, didn't pitch last season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. Then, on the first day of camp, 22-year-old right-hander Alex Reyes learned he needed Tommy John himself. That leaves a lot of question marks after ace Martinez ' more than any Cardinals staff has faced in years.
Outlook: This 40-man roster hints at a team in transition. Venerable 34-year-old catcher Molina is still St. Louis' biggest star. Reyes' injury hurts the youth movement, but the Cardinals are still stacked with talented 20-something sluggers ' Piscotty, Diaz, Gyorko and Grichuk ' who could emerge as household names. Adding Fowler's speed and patience should complement an already deep lineup. The pitching staff is a different matter. Barring a big resurgence from Wainwright, Lynn and Wacha (or a big trade) it's hard to see the Cardinals contending for more than a wild card spot in the Cubs' shadow.
PREVIEW
Cardinals brace for Diamondbacks, Martinez

ST. LOUIS -- The trading deadline is four days away, but the Arizona Diamondbacks might have already made one of the biggest moves.

In acquiring outfielder J.D. Martinez from the Detroit Tigers on July 18, Arizona lengthened its order, daring opponents to pitch around All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and beefing up its playoff chances.

Martinez has paid quick dividends for the Diamondbacks, cracking a pair of homers Wednesday in a 10-3 rout of the Atlanta Braves to give him three with his new team and 19 for the year. Had he not missed the season's first six weeks with a foot injury, Martinez would probably be in the 20s.

He could reach 20 on Thursday night when Arizona starts a four-game series with the suddenly resurgent St. Louis Cardinals in Busch Stadium.

"He's fit in very well with his teammates," first-year Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. "He continues to grow and learn about NL pitching. It's nice when you have a day like this and contribute to the team because that's his overall goal."

Arizona (58-43) owns the National League's top wild-card spot, enjoying the season many thought they would last year. It has beefed up its pitching staff while largely avoiding the kind of major injuries that helped sabotage its 2016.

Wednesday's win upped the Diamondbacks' home record to 36-18. One of its few series losses in Chase Field occurred in late June, when St. Louis (50-51) took two of three after falling 6-5 in 10 innings in the series opener.

The Cardinals enter this one with a sweep of the Colorado Rockies in their hip pocket, courtesy of a 10-5 victory Wednesday night. They wiped out early 2-0 and 4-2 deficits, collecting 15 hits and scoring their fifth series sweep of the year.

"We're hitting the ball really well, passing the baton," St. Louis shortstop Paul DeJong said. "We're starting to gain momentum."

The rookie is a big reason why. His two-run homer in the first inning Wednesday was his 14th in his first 49 big league games. Thirteen of those have happened since he was recalled from Triple-A Memphis in mid-June. Only Miami's Giancarlo Stanton has more in that span.

DeJong has even taken ownership of the third spot in the order, which has been a wasteland for the Cardinals. He's knocked in five runs in his first three games there. Prior to that, the team's No. 9 hitters (read: its pitchers) had 50 RBIs. The No. 3 hitters managed only 46.

"His at-bats look the same wherever he is in the order," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said.

The Cardinals will bring up Luke Weaver from Memphis to start Thursday night. Weaver is 9-1 with a 1.91 ERA in 13 starts at Triple-A. He has worked twice in relief during a brief callup to St. Louis this year, firing three scoreless innings.

Right-hander Zack Godley (3-4, 3.32) takes the bump for Arizona. Godley last worked Saturday, fanning 10 over 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision as the Diamondbacks edged Washington 6-5.

Godley absorbed a 4-3 loss on June 28 against the Cardinals despite allowing only two hits in seven innings. But he permitted three runs, walking three and hitting two.
