KEY GAME INFORMATION
MIAMI: LAST SEASON: 39-43, finished in 10th place in Eastern Conference.
COACH: Erik Spoelstra (12th season, 523-363).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Justise Winslow (12.6 ppg), G Dion Waiters (12.0), G Jimmy Butler (18.7 with Minnesota and Philadelphia), F Kelly Olynyk (10.0), C Bam Adebayo (8.9).
KEY LOSSES: G Dwyane Wade, G Josh Richardson, C Hassan Whiteside, G Rodney McGruder.
KEY ADDITIONS: Butler, G Tyler Herro, F-C Meyers Leonard.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Butler gets a team to call his own, and assumes the role of locker-room leader in the place of Wade ' who retired after 16 seasons, most of them with Miami. The Heat are hoping for healthier years from Waiters and PG Goran Dragic, after both missed about half of last season. Herro, the No. 13 pick in this year's draft, had a strong summer league and followed that up with big numbers in the preseason so he'll clearly be in the mix somewhere. Adebayo enters his first full year as the starting center, a job he won down the stretch last season, and will get help from fellow bigs Olynyk and Leonard. Winslow wants to be a leader for the group, but has missed 94 games in the last three seasons.
OUTLOOK: The Heat haven't won a playoff series since 2016 and are only 124-122 over the last three seasons, yet believe they can get back into more of a postseason-contender role ' even without Wade, who was the team's best player last season. Getting Butler was a major boost and he'll unquestionably be the key to everything Miami does, though he won't be asked to carry the load by himself. Defense wasn't the problem for Miami last season after the Heat finished No. 2 in the league in points allowed; the biggest issue was inconsistent offense, which figures to get better.
DENVER: LAST SEASON: 54-28, lost 4-3 to Portland in Western Conference semifinals.
COACH: Michael Malone (fifth season with Nuggets, 173-155; seventh season overall, 212-222).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Jamal Murray (18.2 ppg), G Gary Harris (12.9), F Paul Millsap (12.6), C Nikola Jokic (20.1), G Will Barton (11.5).
KEY LOSSES: G Isaiah Thomas, F Trey Lyles, C Thomas Welsh.
KEY ADDITIONS: F Jerami Grant, C Bol Bol, F Michael Porter Jr.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Porter was the 14th overall pick in 2018 and missed all of last season as he recovered from back surgery. He skipped the Summer League in Las Vegas due to a balky knee. Now, he's healthy and ready to contribute. A healthy Porter gives the Nuggets another dimension on the perimeter, and another piece to add to the core of Murray, Harris, Jokic and Millsap.
OUTLOOK: The Nuggets have improved every season since Malone took over, going from 33 wins his first season to 40, 46 and 54 last season when they earned the No. 2 seed in the West. They didn't make any splashy moves in the offseason although they did bring back Millsap, picking up his $30 million option and agreed on a $170 million extension for Murray. Behind MVP-candidate Jokic, the Nuggets are a legit title contender.
PREVIEW
Heat ready to compete again vs. Nuggets

The venue is different, the arena is empty and instead of preparing for next season, teams are finishing up the 2019-20 campaign.

Regardless, the goal remains the same for the Miami Heat and Denver Nuggets, who restart their respective campaigns against each other on Saturday afternoon at the ESPN Wide World of Sports campus near Orlando.

Both teams have eight games remaining in this run up to the postseason, where positioning means less than first-round matchups because the idea of home-court advantage is moot in the bubble.

The Heat (41-24) can climb as high as the second seed in the Eastern Conference or drop to sixth depending on how these eight games go, but the most important thing is they're playing meaningful basketball again.

"Our guys are competitors. They love this," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "They're really enjoying this environment, having an opportunity to feel normal and get in between those four lines and compete. We're excited about our team. We've had three really good weeks of practice, guys are ready."

One thing Miami isn't worrying about is using the eight games to find itself in a favorable matchup. The Heat will play the games and then worry about the playoff matchup at the end, Spoelstra said.

"I don't even need to explain it, we're not going to lose games or play differently to try to line up an opponent. That's just not our language," Spoelstra said. "We're not just going to go to [Disney] and waste each other's times. We're there for a reason. Competition, like I said, brings out a different quality out of this group, individually and collectively. We'll treat those games with great respect."

The Nuggets (43-22) enter Saturday's play in third place in the Western Conference. Denver has had to gradually bring players into the fold because of the pandemic -- star Nikola Jokic was diagnosed with COVID-19 when he was home in Serbia -- and coach Michael Malone and his staff have been dealing with some nagging injuries among the players on the roster.

With a tight schedule ahead, health, as usual, will play a part in determining the title.

"Whatever team wins an NBA championship this year has to be very fortunate and lucky with the health of their roster," Malone said.

One advantage Denver has is its deep roster. Led by Jokic and guard Jamal Murray, the Nuggets had 11 players log time in 41 or more games this season. Six are averaging in double figures in scoring.

The most talked about Denver player during exhibition play in the bubble has yet to play an NBA game, however.

Bol Bol, the 7-foot-2 son of former NBA player Manute Bol, was a second-round pick in the 2019 NBA Draft after playing just nine games with the University of Oregon. Left foot surgery limited his career and was a reason he dropped in the draft.

The 20-year-old showed his potential by recording 16 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks in an 89-82 win against the Washington Wizards on July 22. He also had 15 points and three rebounds in a 119-104 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans last Saturday.

He gives Denver yet another unique talent to use.

"I've been working really hard, especially since I got here in the bubble," Bol told reporters after the first exhibition game. "I was just trying not to be nervous, and then everything would just come to me."
