KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA: LAST SEASON: 29-41-12, 70 points. Last in Pacific Division.
COACH: Rick Tocchet (second season, fourth NHL season).
ADDED: C Alex Galchenyuk, F Michael Grabner, F Vinnie Hinostroza, D Jordan Oesterle, D Ilya Lyubushkin.
LOST: F Max Domi, F Jordan Martinook, D Luke Schenn, C Zac Rinaldo.
PLAYER TO WATCH: F Clayton Keller. The skilled forward had a super rookie season, finishing with 23 goals and 42 assists while becoming a finalist for the Calder Trophy, awarded to the NHL's best rookie. Keller had a midseason lull after a superb start to his rookie season and the Coyotes are hoping for even more production his second season as he gains more consistency.
OUTLOOK: The thought of a playoff push had been considered a longshot at best the past few seasons. It could be a reality this season with a still young but talented roster, a year under Tocchet's system and
ADDED scoring depth. A big key will be keeping goalie Antti Raanta healthy after he was limited to 47 games a year ago. Do that and get the scoring boost they're expecting and don't be surprised to see the Coyotes in the playoff hunt late in the season.
NY ISLANDERS: LAST SEASON: 35-37-10, 80 points. Seventh in Metropolitan Division.
COACH: Barry Trotz (first season, 20th NHL season).
ADDED: F Leo Komarov, F Valtteri Filppula, F Tom Kuhnhackl, F Jan Kovar, G Robin Lehner, D Luca Sbisa.
LOST: F John Tavares, D Calvin de Haan, G Jaroslav Halak.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Mathew Barzal. The reigning Calder Trophy winner as the league's top rookie will be looked on to fill a bigger role with Tavares' departure. Barzal led the team in scoring last season with 85 points (22 goals, 63 assists). After playing on the second line with Jordan Eberle and fellow youngster Anthony Beauvillier a year ago, Barzal is expected to lead the top line with Beauvillier and Josh Bailey.
OUTLOOK: The Islanders have made just three playoff appearances in the last 11 seasons, missing out by 17 points last season after finishing with 30 losses in their final 45 games (15-24-6). The regression cost general manager Garth Snow and
COACH Doug Weight their jobs, replaced by three-time champion executive Lou Lamoriello as president of hockey operations and Trotz ' who led Washington to the Stanley Cup title. The change in leadership has brought new optimism for the future, though experts expect another playoff miss.
PREVIEW
Isles chase division title, while Coyotes cling to playoff hopes

The New York Islanders opened a pivotal weekend back-to-back set Saturday by steadying themselves in the race for the Metropolitan Division crown.

The Arizona Coyotes' playoff hopes may rest on being able to salvage one win in their own back-to-back set Sunday.

The Islanders and Coyotes will each complete a busy weekend Sunday, when New York hosts Arizona in an afternoon game with playoff implications in both conferences at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y.

The Islanders snapped a two-game losing streak Saturday by beating the host Philadelphia Flyers 4-2. The visiting Coyotes' untimely losing streak hit four games Saturday with a 2-1 shootout defeat to the New Jersey Devils.

The loss ensured the Coyotes (36-32-7) would fall out of a wild card spot in the Western Conference.

Arizona, which began the day tied with the Minnesota Wild for the final spot but on the outside looking in due to having two fewer regulation/overtime wins than the Wild, fell one point behind the Colorado Avalanche, who moved into eighth place with a 4-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

The damage for the Coyotes was mitigated somewhat later Saturday, when the Wild fell to the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1. That results means Arizona can move back into sole possession of the last wild card spot with a win over the Islanders on Sunday plus a regulation loss for the Avalanche, who again take on the Blackhawks, this time in Chicago, on Sunday night.

"We've got a big game against the Islanders," Coyotes head coach Rick Tocchet said Saturday afternoon. "We've got to just flesh this one out. We got a point, we're still fine. Got to win some hockey games."

The Islanders (43-25-7) were able to exhale a bit after Josh Bailey scored twice in the final four minutes against the Flyers. New York entered Saturday having lost to the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens by a combined 9-0.

Saturday's win pulled the Islanders within one point of the first-place Washington Capitals in the Metropolitan Division.

The win also ensured that New York would retain second place via the tiebreaker over the Pittsburgh Penguins, who earned a 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars later Saturday. Both teams have 93 points, but New York has played one fewer game.

"Getting in a little bit of a stretch like this, everyone tightened up a little bit and tried to do a little bit too much," Islanders goalie Robin Lehner said after he earned the win Saturday by recording 22 saves.

"Kinda (lost) the fun out of the game a little bit. I think today we just had a mindset go play our game, have fun again, enjoy the game, not grip the sticks too hard or anything. And I think we came out and we played good hockey," Lehner said.

The Islanders could know by faceoff Sunday at 3 p.m. whether they'll be playing for a share of first place or sole possession of first in the Metropolitan Division. The Capitals are scheduled to host the Flyers at 12:30 Sunday, while the Penguins are idle.
