KEY GAME INFORMATION
DETROIT: LAST SEASON: 30-39-13, 73 points. Fifth place in Atlantic Division.
COACH: Jeff Blashill (104-105-37, fourth NHL season).
ADDED: F Thomas Vanek, G Jonathan Bernier, F Filip Zadina, assistant
COACH Dan Bylsma.
LOST: F Henrik Zetterberg.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Dylan Larkin. The 22-year-old center was given a $30.5 million, five-year contract to lead the franchise on and off the ice. Larkin led the team with 47 assists and 63 points, surpassing the career highs he set as a rookie two years ago. Without Zetterberg, he will have to do even more this season.
OUTLOOK: The rebuilding Red Wings will likely miss the playoffs for a third straight year, their longest drought since 1979-83. Zetterberg's career-ending back injury was a hit for a franchise that simply can't replace him this season. Larkin, Anthony Mantha and Andreas Athanasiou, all of whom signed multiyear deals last summer, provide some hope as young, talented forwards. Goaltender Jimmy Howard should be able to keep games close, but a shaky defense and lack of quality depth will be tough to overcome.
SAN JOSE: LAST SEASON: 45-27-10, 100 points. Third place in Pacific Division.
LOST to Vegas Golden Knights in Western Conference semifinals.
COACH: Peter DeBoer (fourth season, 11th NHL season).
ADDED: D Erik Karlsson, F Antti Suomela, F Rourke Chartier.
LOST: F Chris Tierney, D Dylan DeMelo, F Mikkel Boedker, F Eric Fehr, F Joel Ward, F Jannik Hansen, D Paul Martin.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Karlsson. The Sharks
ADDED the two-time Norris Trophy-winning defenseman on the eve of training camp in a blockbuster move. Karlsson is an elite playmaker and defenseman and should provide a major boost to San Jose on the power play, as well as five-on-five play.
OUTLOOK: Ever since acquiring Joe Thornton in general manager Doug Wilson's first blockbuster trade back in 2005, the Sharks have viewed themselves as Stanley Cup contenders almost every season. That is clearly the case this year after adding Karlsson to a defensive unit that already featured 2016 Norris winner Brent Burns and shut-down defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic. The Sharks are potentially thin at center and will need a healthy season from Thornton at age 39 after two straight years with major knee injuries in order to challenge for the Cup.
PREVIEW
Sharks host Red Wings, aim to stop skid

San Jose showed signs of breaking out of its slump during its latest defeat. The Sharks will try to end their five-game slide when they host the Detroit Red Wings on Monday.

The Sharks hold the second spot in the Pacific Division despite their recent woes and picked up a point with a 4-3 overtime loss to Anaheim on Friday. Their previous four losses came in regulation.

"The one point is huge, but I thought we played well enough to get the two," Sharks defenseman Justin Braun told NHL.com. "They were opportunistic and buried a few of their chances, and you come away with just one."

San Jose hasn't dropped six straight since March 2017. It had a six-game winning streak prior to its current slump.

Defense has been the main issue. It has allowed at least four goals over the past six outings.

Sharks coach Pete DeBoer was encouraged by how his team played on Friday.

"Close game going into the third," he said. "I didn't think we gave them very much. The chances they got they stuck in the net, though."

Neither side got much going offensively, as the two goalies combined for just 40 saves.

"We were in it the whole game," Sharks forward Logan Couture said to NHL.com. "A few plays here or there, a few chances we could have scored on when we had the opportunity and it would have been a different story."

Center Joe Pavelski, who has 37 goals, didn't Friday due to a lower body injury. He's questionable to Monday. Pavelski had a hat trick in the first meeting between the teams on Feb. 24, a 5-3 Sharks victory.

Forward Gustav Nyquist will face his former team since he was dealt just prior to the trade deadline. Nyquist has three goals and three assists in 12 games since the swap. He scored a goal against the Sharks in the first meeting, his last game in a Red Wings uniform.

The Red Wings, who have already been eliminated from the playoff chase, surprised Vegas 3-2 in overtime on Saturday. Anthony Mantha scored two of Detroit's goals, including the game-winner 19 seconds into the extra session.

Mantha made up for a giveaway that led to a short-handed goal for the Golden Knights.

"He was excellent tonight. He was a big-time player tonight," coach Jeff Blashill said. "He had the unfortunate turnover on the power play. I thought it was great that he comes right back and scores, and then scores the overtime goal. I thought it was fitting given the game he was having. I thought he was moving his feet right from the very first drop of the puck."

Former Michigan State standout Taro Hirose recorded another assist on Saturday. He has notched one in each of his three NHL appearances since signing an entry-level contract earlier this month.

"He's a real smart player. He finds his way to points," Blashill said. "I thought he had moments of real effectiveness tonight. Like every young player he's figuring out space, and that'll be an important thing for him because he's not super big."
