KEY GAME INFORMATION
ALABAMA: Last season: Alabama made its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2012 and won its first tourney game since 2006 before losing to eventual champion Villanova in the second round.
Nickname: Crimson Tide.
Coach: Avery Johnson.
Conference: SEC.
Who's gone: PG Collin Sexton left after one season and was the No. 8 overall NBA draft pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He averaged 19.2 points, second in the SEC. F Braxton Key, who started 17 games, transferred to Virginia.
Who's back: F Donta Hall averaged 10.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. John Petty, one of the league's better 3-point shooters, scored 10.2 ppg as a freshman. Dazon Ingram (9.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg) is the likely front-runner to replace Sexton at point guard. G Herbert Jones is a top defender who could need to score more. F Riley Norris received a medical redshirt after getting hurt early last season.
Who's new: G Tevin Mack averaged 14.8 ppg two years ago for Texas but sat out last season after transferring. PG Kira Lewis Jr. was a five-star recruit who graduated early and reclassified to play this season, but the 6-foot-3, 160-pounder could need time to grow into a role and mature physically.
The Skinny: The Tide is picked to finish seventh in the SEC, and has a big offensive void to fill after Sexton's departure. Mack and Petty are candidates to fill the role of go-to scorer. Alabama has been strong defensively but ranked 12th in the league in scoring last season.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Alabama among a group of teams with 120-1 odds of winning the NCAA Tournament. That group includes Arizona, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Texas A&M.
KENTUCKY: Last season: 26-11, won the SEC Tournament title and reached NCAA Sweet 16.
Nickname: Wildcats.
Coach: John Calipari.
Conference: Southeastern.
Who's gone: Forward Kevin Knox and guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander became NBA lottery selections. Guard Hamidou Diallo and forward Jarred Vanderbilt were also drafted.
Who's back: Forward PJ Washington withdrew from the NBA Draft and is the top returning scorer and rebounder at 10.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game respectively. Six-foot-11 Nick Richards and guard Quade Green (9.3 points) returned for their sophomore seasons, giving the Wildcats some experience. Guard Jemarl Baker is healthy after redshirting last year with injury.
Who's new: 6-8 forward Reid Travis is a graduate transfer from Stanford who was a two-time All-Pacific 12 Conference first team selection. Kentucky's latest group of blue chip recruits include forward E.J. Montgomery and guards Ashton Hagans, Keldon Johnson, Immanuel Quickley and Tyler Herro.
The Skinny: The mix of returnees Washington, Green and Richards with another heralded freshman class led by Johnson and Montgomery recalls the deep and talented 2014-15 team that won its first 38 games. Calipari won't go there on the expectations, but he loves the depth of his 10th Wildcats squad.
Expectations: Oddsmakers have made the Wildcats the 11/2 second choice behind Duke (5-1) to win the national championship. They have the potential to surpass last year's tournament run and pursue that ninth NCAA title.
PREVIEW
No. 4 Kentucky draws tough Alabama in SEC tourney opener

Kentucky is gearing up for another NCAA Tournament run.

But first the fourth-ranked Wildcats have the SEC tournament to deal with.

"We're definitely going in trying to win," forward P.J. Washington recently told the media. "(But) at the end of the day, I don't really think the SEC tournament really matters. It's the NCAA Tournament (that matters), and we know that."

The Wildcats (26-5) had two byes and play their tournament opener against 10th-seeded Alabama in the quarterfinals Friday night.

Kentucky coach John Calipari is coaching in his 10th SEC tournament and he said this year's field is "by far the most balanced" he has seen in his tenure.

As evidence, his Wildcats are the second seed, behind ninth-ranked LSU.

"You're talking about eight, nine teams that have an opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament," Calipari said of the conference. "Anybody that's playing, it's a hard a game, the first game. It doesn't matter if you're playing Wednesday, Thursday, Friday -- your game is going to be a hard game."

Kentucky was ranked No. 2 in the preseason poll but lost its season opener against Duke. The Wildcats also lost two of their final eight games, falling to LSU and Tennessee, a potential semifinal opponent Saturday.

"I think we've been through the ups and downs of college basketball," freshman guard Keldon Johnson said. "We've been in places where they thought we were the worst team and we've been in places where they thought we were one of the best teams in the nation. We just gotta go out there every day and do what we do.

"It's go time. Let's get it done. Let's do what we do. That's what we're here for."

Alabama (18-14) was just 8-10 in the SEC, but strengthened its case for a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament with a 62-57 quarterfinal win over seventh-seeded Ole Miss on Thursday night.

"We think our resume speaks for itself, but beyond that we've got another game (Friday) night and we're still alive," Crimson Tide coach Avery Johnson said. "This team has been inconsistent all year, but this is a great time to start being consistent and playing some great basketball.

"I've been in a lot of big games and I was just sitting there in the locker room with my legs crossed before the game, just letting (the players) know that I'm ready to go. I'm calm, cool and collected. I've got a lot of confidence in them."

And he maintained that confidence even after the Rebels took a 38-24 lead at the half as Alabama committed 10 turnovers.

"I just asked them (at halftime) to please turn the ball over five times or less (in the second half)," Johnson said. "We turned it over six times, but I'll forgive them. We were just beating ourselves."

The Tide outscored Ole Miss 38-19 in the second half.

"This team seems to respond when our backs are against the wall," Johnson said, "and our backs were definitely against the wall tonight."

Alabama gave Kentucky its first SEC loss, prevailing 77-75 in the conference opener for both teams Jan. 5 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

"We've got a deep rotation and we're going to be fresh and ready to go," Johnson said. "And hopefully we'll come out and give ourselves a chance to win."
