KEY GAME INFORMATION
LOUISVILLE:
Coach: Chris Mack (first season).
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: Center Anas Mahmoud, guard Quentin Snider, forwards Deng Adel and Ray Spalding (NBA).
Who's back: Junior forward V.J. King (8.6 points per game) is the Cardinals' top returning scorer and looks to improve on offense and defense. Guards Dwayne Sutton and Darius Perry provided depth, and Perry will likely be the floor general. Six-foot-11 sophomore Malik Williams, a good perimeter shooter, looks to develop an inside game. Guard Ryan McMahon aims shoot more consistently and improve on defense. Forward Steven Enoch, a Connecticut transfer, is eligible to play and must find his role in the rotation. Sophomore forward Jordan Nwora looks to be more than a perimeter offensive threat.
Who's new: Guards Christen Cunningham (who was named a captain), Khwan Fore and forward Akoy Agau are three graduate transfers Mack signed to fill roster spots. Senior guard Will Rainey transferred from neighboring Spalding University but must sit out this season per NCAA rules.
The Skinny: Mack's late-spring arrival after nine seasons at Xavier left him scrambling to replace a handful of departures with grad transfers. He's also switching the defensive philosophy from pressing and trapping into a pack line philosophy, but with 10 scholarship players and a lack of height, Louisville must stay healthy.
Expectations: Oddsmakers have made the Cardinals a 120-1 longshot to win the national championship. Considering two scandals have cast a cloud over the program for the past three seasons, a controversy-free year of transition under Mack is an important step in the right direction.
N CAROLINA: Last season: 26-11, reached second round of NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Tar Heels.
Coach: Roy Williams.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: The program has lost mainstays from its 2017 national championship winner in point guard Joel Berry II ' a former Final Four most outstanding player ' and swingman Theo Pinson.
Who's back: Forward Luke Maye followed his last-second shot to beat Kentucky in the 2017 NCAA Elite Eight with a star-turning junior season, averaging 16.9 points and 10.1 points to be an Associated Press third-team All-American. He's now a preseason AP All-American and picked as ACC player of the year. Starters Cameron Johnson (12.4 points) and Kenny Williams (11.4) are back on the perimeter, which also has junior point guard Seventh Woods competing to take Berry's job. There's also a rotation of serviceable big men, led by sophomores Garrison Brooks and Sterling Manley.
Who's new: The Tar Heels have their best recruiting class in years, perhaps not coincidentally as they emerge from years of uncertainty due to a now-resolved NCAA academic case. Wing Nassir Little is the kind of five-star McDonald's All-American and possible one-and-done talent that shunned the Tar Heels in recent years. There's another McDonald's All-American in Coby White, an top-25 national recruit who will compete to be the new point guard after setting a North Carolina state scoring record with more than 3,500 points in high school. And the 6-foot-7 Rechon "Leaky" Black brings size and versatility to the perimeter.
The Skinny: There's no questioning talent and scoring potential on a team with Maye, Johnson and Williams joined by the touted rookie class. There are two main questions here: the Tar Heels need White or Woods to play well at the point with Berry gone, and that revolving door of big men needs to provide some interior toughness that was lacking at times as UNC leaned heavily on a small-ball lineup last year. If the eighth-ranked Tar Heels resolve both issues, this is a Final Four contender.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have UNC at 10-to-1 to win it all, tied with Villanova for the fifth-best odds nationally.
PREVIEW
Round 3 coming for Louisville versus No. 3 North Carolina

North Carolina produced mostly a splendid regular season and one of the glitches during the past two months came against Louisville.

The third-ranked Tar Heels later avenged that result, and now the teams will play for a third time in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

They meet Thursday night in the quarterfinals at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C.

Seventh-seeded Louisville trounced 12th-seeded Notre Dame 75-53 in Wednesday night's second-round game.

When Louisville defeated North Carolina 83-62 on Jan. 12 in Chapel Hill, it spurred the Tar Heels to refocus and nearly go unscathed since then.

It also might be the reason that North Carolina stayed under the radar for a chunk of the winter.

"I really don't get into that," coach Roy Williams said about whether his team has been underappreciated. "The bottom line for us is to have great kids and win and I think we've done that."

Indeed, North Carolina (26-5) ended up as a co-champion in the ACC regular season and holds the No. 2 seed as it opens tournament play.

North Carolina avenged the loss to Louisville by defeating the Cardinals 79-69 on the road Feb. 2.

The Tar Heels have one loss in their last 15 games.

"We are feeling good right now," North Carolina guard Cameron Johnson said. "We understand that right now it is win or go home. You cannot take anything for granted this time of year."

North Carolina had to defeat Duke in Saturday night's regular-season finale to claim a share of the regular-season title.

It's the ninth time in 16 seasons as North Carolina coach that coach Roy Williams has overseen a regular-season title of some sort. In each of those nine seasons, the Tar Heels won the regular-season finale against Duke to secure either the outright championship or a partial title.

North Carolina has reached the ACC Tournament's final in three of the last four years, winning it once.

Louisville (20-12) has reached the 20-win mark in coach Chris Mack's first season.

After the Cardinals defeated North Carolina, they entered the national rankings. They were still as high as No. 15 for the rematch.

"We know that we have a huge challenge in the Tar Heels," Mack said. "But it beats going home."

North Carolina entered the week leading the country in rebounding with 43.9 per game.

"When you play a team for a third time, both teams are going to have great familiarity with one another," Mack said. "Coach Williams doesn't try to trick you. They're going to try to race the ball up the floor. They're going to try to pound it inside, and they're going to try to decimate you on the glass. They did that in (the second meeting this season)."

North Carolina senior guard Kenny Williams racked up a season-high 18 points in the most-recent Duke game. That could be a good omen as freshman point guard Coby White is bound to be receiving more defensive attention as his point totals have soared recently.

"I just needed to see the ball go in," Kenny Williams said.

The Louisville-North Carolina game is the opener of a night session doubleheader.

"It's going to be obviously pro-Carolina," Mack said of the crowd. "I'm hoping the Duke fans (waiting for the nightcap) get excited, too, for the Louisville Cardinals."
