KEY GAME INFORMATION
DUKE: Last season: 29-8, lost to Kansas in the Elite Eight.
Nickname: Blue Devils.
Coach: Mike Krzyzewski.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: All five starters. Big men Marvin Bagley III and Wendell Carter Jr., and guards Grayson Allen, Gary Trent Jr. and Trevon Duval are all in the NBA.
Who's back: Not much. Center Marques Bolden, the team's leading returning scorer, averaged 3.9 points in less than 13 minutes per game while Javin Delaurier is the top returning rebounder at 4.0 rpg.
Who's new: The Blue Devils brought in the consensus No. 1 recruiting class and four of its members are expected to start. They're led by Canadian guard and preseason AP All-American R.J. Barrett and athletic freak Zion Williamson ' who at 6-foot-7 and 285 pounds has filled YouTube with highlight-reel dunks. Point guard Tre Jones is the younger brother of Tyus Jones, the most outstanding player at the 2015 Final Four for Duke.
The Skinny: It's title-or-bust again for Duke's latest crop of players with the potential to jump to the NBA after only one season in college. Krzyzewski has installed an offensive system that depends on the players' versatility and their court sense to make intelligent reads and decisions. That system helped the Golden State Warriors become an NBA dynasty, and Krzyzewski hopes it works as well with his talented group.
Expectations: The Blue Devils are favorites to win the NCAA Tournament at 5-to-1, according to Las Vegas oddsmakers.
N CAROLINA: Last season: 26-11, reached second round of NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Tar Heels.
Coach: Roy Williams.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: The program has lost mainstays from its 2017 national championship winner in point guard Joel Berry II ' a former Final Four most outstanding player ' and swingman Theo Pinson.
Who's back: Forward Luke Maye followed his last-second shot to beat Kentucky in the 2017 NCAA Elite Eight with a star-turning junior season, averaging 16.9 points and 10.1 points to be an Associated Press third-team All-American. He's now a preseason AP All-American and picked as ACC player of the year. Starters Cameron Johnson (12.4 points) and Kenny Williams (11.4) are back on the perimeter, which also has junior point guard Seventh Woods competing to take Berry's job. There's also a rotation of serviceable big men, led by sophomores Garrison Brooks and Sterling Manley.
Who's new: The Tar Heels have their best recruiting class in years, perhaps not coincidentally as they emerge from years of uncertainty due to a now-resolved NCAA academic case. Wing Nassir Little is the kind of five-star McDonald's All-American and possible one-and-done talent that shunned the Tar Heels in recent years. There's another McDonald's All-American in Coby White, an top-25 national recruit who will compete to be the new point guard after setting a North Carolina state scoring record with more than 3,500 points in high school. And the 6-foot-7 Rechon "Leaky" Black brings size and versatility to the perimeter.
The Skinny: There's no questioning talent and scoring potential on a team with Maye, Johnson and Williams joined by the touted rookie class. There are two main questions here: the Tar Heels need White or Woods to play well at the point with Berry gone, and that revolving door of big men needs to provide some interior toughness that was lacking at times as UNC leaned heavily on a small-ball lineup last year. If the eighth-ranked Tar Heels resolve both issues, this is a Final Four contender.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have UNC at 10-to-1 to win it all, tied with Villanova for the fifth-best odds nationally.
PREVIEW
Williamson back for No. 5 Duke's third crack at No. 3 UNC

Rivals Duke and North Carolina will go at it again for the third time in barely more than three weeks Friday night.

Fifth-ranked Duke looks closer to full health for this one after freshman forward Zion Williamson's sterling return.

The Atlantic Coast Conference tournament semifinal matchup in Charlotte, N.C., will come just 24 hours after Williamson shot 13-for-13 from the field on the way to 29 points against Syracuse in the quarterfinals Thursday night.

"We have Zion back, so it was just a lot of fun," Duke teammate RJ Barrett said.

Third-ranked North Carolina, the tournament's No. 2 seed, swept the regular-season series from Duke, which holds the No. 3 seed. The first matchup Feb. 20 was notable because Williamson went out in the opening minute with a knee sprain.

"I know I was ready to come back a few days ago," Williamson said Thursday. "I got some reps in with the team. But I would like to say this, there was never any pressure for me to rush back when I wasn't ready."

Williamson didn't play again until the Syracuse game, missing more than three weeks and six games. In between, he was named the ACC Player of the Year. His flaws Thursday came at the foul line, where he shot 2-for-9.

"I wanted to be out there every game," Williamson said after Duke's 84-72 victory over the Orange. "You see me, I see my brothers out there battling, and I just wanted to go to war with them."

Duke (27-5) and North Carolina (27-5) are meeting in the ACC tournament semifinals for the third year in a row. They split the past two years in the postseason.

"You got to continue to play and continue to fight because the other team is doing the same thing," North Carolina senior Luke Maye said. "I think we're going to try to do that (Friday)."

This will be the first ACC tournament semifinal with two top-five teams.

North Carolina won 83-70 against Louisville in the quarterfinals.

Even before the third matchup with Duke was set, Tar Heels coach Roy Williams was asked about the possibility.

"We are here, and if they bring the Golden State Warriors out, we'll play," Williams said. "If it's Duke, we'll play. If it's Syracuse, we'll play. I'm being honest. I care about how our team does."

North Carolina has won eight games in a row -- including two against Duke in that span.

"I think we got better, and if you look, and I really believe this, I believe almost all of our teams have gotten better down the stretch, the second half of the conference season," Williams said.

Duke is without junior center Marques Bolden for the ACC tournament. He sprained his left knee Saturday night at North Carolina, when the Tar Heels won 79-70 in the teams' second meeting of the season.

Duke and North Carolina both have 101 all-time victories in ACC tournament play, the most of any school in the event.

The winner plays Saturday night in the title game against the winner of the first semifinal between top-seeded Virginia and fourth-seeded Florida State.
