Oregon State seeks sweep of Pac-12 leader Oregon

Oregon can claim consecutive outright Pac-12 Conference championships for the first time with a road win Sunday against rival Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore.

The Ducks (18-5, 13-4 Pac-12) rallied from a halftime deficit against UCLA on Wednesday, scoring 45 second-half points in an 82-74 victory. The win moved Oregon into sole possession of first place and marked the Ducks' fourth straight win and ninth in 10 games.

"We got down nine (points) and a lot of teams wouldn't have responded that way," Oregon coach Dana Altman said of the comeback win over UCLA. "Our defense really tightened up. We finally started getting some deflections."

Oregon's defense forced UCLA into 14 turnovers, including four steals by L.J. Figueroa and two by Chris Duarte.

Duarte (1.9) is one of four currently active Ducks averaging more than a steal per game. Among them is Will Richardson, whom Altman credited for "(taking) over" in the win against the Bruins.

Richardson, who made his debut on Feb. 4, scored nine of his 15 points in the second half and sank 6 of 8 shots from the field, including 2 of 3 from behind the arc.

Richardson did not play in Oregon's first meeting with Oregon State, a 75-64 win by the Beavers on Jan. 23 in Eugene.

Ethan Thompson scored 19 points in that matchup, primarily getting to the foul line for a 12-of-14 performance.

Oregon State (14-11, 10-9) is riding a three-game winning streak as it welcomes Oregon to Gill Coliseum.

All three of those Beavers wins -- over Cal, Stanford and most recently a 75-70 defeat of Utah on Wednesday -- came on the road.

Oregon State's recent surge followed a stretch where it lost four out of five.

"We knew what our potential was, but it was gonna take a while to get there because of our lack of experience," Beavers coach Wayne Tinkle said following the win at Utah.

Leading scorer Thompson (15.5 points per game) is a senior, but sophomore Jarod Lucas (12.8 points) is seeing a major uptick in his responsibility from a season ago, and junior Warith Alatishe (9.2 points, 8.4 rebounds) is a newcomer this season from Nicholls State.

Oregon State can build on its positive momentum heading into next week's Pac-12 tournament with a season sweep of Oregon, which the Beavers last accomplished in the 2018-19 season.
