KEY GAME INFORMATION
NC STATE: Last season: 21-12, lost in first round of NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Wolfpack.
Coach: Kevin Keatts.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: A lot of scoring walked out the door with the loss of graduate transfer Allerik Freeman (16.1 points) and 7-footer Omer Yurtseven, a third-team all-ACC pick who averaged 13.5 points but has transferred to Georgetown. N.C. State also lost valuable experience with the departures of fifth-year senior Lennard Freeman, another graduate transfer in Sam Hunt and senior forward Abdul-Malik Abu.
Who's back: Senior Torin Dorn is the top returning scorer (13.9) after thriving in his first year in Keatts' system. Sophomore Braxton Beverly provided outside shooting and ballhandling, though he is recovering from surgery for a broken left hand and it's unclear when he'll be ready. And junior Markell Johnson is back at the point after ranking fifth nationally by averaging a league-best 7.3 assists.
Who's new: There's college-ready help in several transfers. The list starts with Utah transfer Devon Daniels, UNC Wilmington transfer C.J. Bryce and Missouri transfer Blake Harris, while Samford's Wyatt Walker and Florida International's Eric Lockett are graduate transfers. Daniels and Bryce worked out with the Wolfpack all last season while sitting out as transfers, while Harris sat out the spring semester after joining the program. Daniels is a 6-foot-5 redshirt sophomore who averaged 9.9 points while starting 26 games at Utah, while the 6-5 Bryce is a redshirt junior and first-team all-Colonial Athletic Association performer while averaging 17.4 points under Keatts at his previous stop. The 6-9 Walker will provide rebounding help, while Lockett will help with depth.
The Skinny: Keatts brought a needed won't-back-down competitiveness to the Wolfpack in Year 1, which included wins against nationally ranked Arizona, Duke and rival North Carolina. He had said several times that last year's team was able to do maybe about 75 percent of what he envisions for the long term with its fullcourt and pressure style of play. There's potential for the Wolfpack to do more in Year 2 with a lot of experience and versatility on the wing. Picked to finish eighth in the 15-team ACC, N.C. State seems positioned to return to the NCAA Tournament again.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have N.C. State at 85-to-1 to win it all, tied for 25th-best odds nationally.
VIRGINIA: Last season: 31-3, lost in first round of NCAA Tournament
Nickname: Cavaliers
Coach: Tony Bennett, 10th season
Conference: Atlantic Coast
Who's gone: G Devon Hall and F Isaiah Wilkins
Who's back: G Kyle Guy (14.1 ppg, 83 3-pointers) was the team's leading scorer and joins point guard Ty Jerome (10.6 ppg, 132 assists) as one of the nation's top backcourt tandems. F De'Andre Hunter returns from a late-season wrist injury as the ACC's top sixth man last year (9.2 ppg in just 19.9 mpg) and F Jack Salt anchors a defense that is always one of the nation's best. Fs Mamadi Diakite and Jay Huff have shown flashes of brilliance, but will need to offer more consistency at both ends.
Who's new: Alabama transfer Braxton Key could be a huge addition if he returns to his freshman year form when he averaged 12 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists for the Crimson Tide. Slowed by a knee injury, his numbers were cut almost in half, but at 6-foot-8, he should be a valued rebounding addition, too.
The Skinny: The Cavaliers may have topped their Ralph Sampson lost to Chaminade legacy last season by becoming the first No. 1 seed, and the overall No. 1 seed at that, to lose in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Bennett has said it's important to remember the feeling, but also their historic success and move forward. Bennett's team have largely underachieved in the tournament, reaching just one Elite Eight and one Sweet 16, a lack of success that has to haunt on some level.
Expectations: The Cavaliers are ranked fifth to start the season and picked second behind Duke in the ACC. With much veteran experience, they should again be able to give the young but talented Blue Devils a run for the ACC regular season and tournament titles.
PREVIEW
No. 2 UVa, seeking tournament redemption, faces NC State

In the same arena where Virginia's postseason ended last season, the Cavaliers' 2019 postseason will begin on Thursday afternoon.

No. 1 seed Virginia will look to defend its ACC tournament title this weekend as it opens eighth-seeded North Carolina State, who edged No. 9 seed Clemson on Wednesday.

"You're now going into a different kind of tournament which is a one-and-done," Virginia head coach Tony Bennett said on Tuesday. "It's the same in the NCAA Tournament. Just being as ready as we can and we've tried to grow as much as we can."

Virginia (28-2), ranked No. 2 in the nation, has won eight games in a row and capped off another 16-win ACC regular season slate and has now won 33 conference games over the past two seasons.

North Carolina State (22-10) kept its NCAA Tournament hopes alive with a one-point comeback win over Clemson in Wednesday's second round. The Wolfpack trailed by 16 points at halftime, but overcame the deficit and posted the second-largest comeback in tournament history, winning 59-58.

"It was about how much heart and desire and effort you would put into it," Wolfpack head coach Kevin Keatts said after the game. "I told them, I said: 'If you played extremely hard, we'll come out with a win.' And these guys were special."

Guard Markell Johnson knocked down two free throws with less than three seconds to play to propel the Wolfpack as he scored a game-high 23 points and was the only North Carolina State player in double figures.

The Cavaliers haven't played since their 73-68 win at home against Louisville in Saturday's regular-season finale. Virginia beat the Wolfpack in Raleigh in the teams' lone meeting this season, but not without some struggles.

The one-point overtime win was Virginia's toughest triumph of the season as they needed Kyle Guy's lone 3-pointer of the game with two minutes left in overtime to put them ahead for good.

"We'll live and learn," Bennett said after the win back in January. "We're fortunate to get out of here."

Virginia has won seven straight games against North Carolina State and has limited the Wolfpack to 55 or fewer points in six of those seven wins.

North Carolina State averages 81 points per game on the season, but has scored 73 or fewer in each of its last four games - but is 2-2 in those games. The Wolfpack have shown signs of better defense, which will have to continue against a Virginia team that has connected on 30 3-pointers in its last two games.

"I think this team is built for that," Keatts said about his team's comeback against Clemson. "I don't want to be in that position all of the time thought."

Another early start on Thursday (12:30 p.m. local) may bode well for the Wolfpack, who will already have a game under their belt and may have a bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line. The top-seeded Cavaliers are currently projected to be the top seed in the tournament, and will be looking to extend their ACC tournament win streak to four games.
