KEY GAME INFORMATION
UCLA: Last season: 31-5, lost to Kentucky in Sweet 16.
Who's gone: G Lonzo Ball, F TJ Leaf, G Isaac Hamilton, G Bryce Alford, F-C Ike Anigbogu.
Who's back: C Thomas Welsh. The senior led the team with 43 blocks while starting 32 games last season. G Aaron Holiday. He was a solid sixth man last season and will help replace Lonzo Ball's production. F G.G. Goloman. Now a senior, the veteran big man contributes off the bench. G Prince Ali. He redshirted as a freshman last year after left knee meniscus tear. F Alex Olesinski. Also redshirted last year with foot problems.
Who's new: G LiAngelo Ball. The freshman is Lonzo's middle brother and he averaged 33.8 points as a high school senior, so he's used to a boatload of attention. But following his big brother in Westwood and playing in the same city as Lonzo's Lakers team won't be easy. G Jaylen Hands. He averaged 29.2 points and 8.0 rebounds as a McDonald's All-American in his senior season. G Kris Wilkes. He was a McDonald's All-American and Indiana Mr. Basketball 24 years after Steve Alford earned the honor. F Cody Riley. Highly regarded national recruit. G Chris Smith. A top-100 recruit.
The Skinny: Alford has reloaded with another talented roster that will contend for the Pac-12 title and is capable of a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, which is the annual expectation for a school that owns 11 national championships.
WISCONSIN: Last season: 27-10; lost to Florida in regional semifinals of NCAA Tournament
Who's gone: F Nigel Hayes, F Vitto Brown, G Bronson Koenig, G Zak Showalter, G Jordan Hill
Who's back: F Ethan Happ (14.0 points, 9.0 rebounds) is the lone returning starter. One of the toughest big-man matchups in the country with his athleticism, one of Happ's only weaknesses is a lack of an outside shot. G D'Mitrik Trice (5.6 points) hit 41 percent from 3-point territory off the bench as a freshman last season. He has the poise to take over the point guard job from Koenig. G Brevin Pritzl will get a shot to show off his 3-point range with more regular minutes. Swingman Khalil Iverson's strength is athleticism in the paint.
Who's new: A promising three-member freshman class could be called on to contribute early, especially Gs Kobe King and Brad Davison. The athletic, 6-foot-4 King was the unanimous prep player of the year in Wisconsin last season. The hustling Davison could be the next player that Badgers fans love and opponents hate to face.
The Skinny: A transition year for Wisconsin. The talent is there, but the Badgers lack the experience that fueled the program to new heights over the last five years. A summer exhibition trip of Australia and New Zealand did help with developing chemistry. A return to the NCAA Tournament will depend on 3-point shooting and how the supporting cast develops around Happ.

No. 23 UCLA, Wisconsin meet in consolation game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The good part of playing on back-to-back nights is getting a chance to get right back on the court to remove the bitter sting of a defeat. The bad part is that there is not a lot of time to learn from what went wrong.

Wisconsin will face No. 23 UCLA in the consolation game of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic on Tuesday night at Sprint Center. UCLA lost to Creighton 100-89 in the first semifinal, while Wisconsin lost 70-65 to No. 25 Baylor in the second game.

Wisconsin is known for its slow pace, while UCLA likes to run up and down the floor.

"UCLA is another good team," Badgers coach Greg Gard said. "Like I just told our team in the locker room, here we go again, another really good team we have to get ready for in less than 24 hours.

"We'll have to see what we learn from tonight. We'll have to take steps forward."

Wisconsin (2-2) fell behind Baylor by 19 points midway through the second half, then went on a 21-4 run to cut the deficit to two points. However, the Badgers couldn't get over the hump.

"If we could bottle the last 10 minutes and have that level of competitiveness and fight and execution of the game plan, we would have been in a much different position," Gard said. "As they say, if you want to get out of the hole, stop digging. We were able to stop digging and fight our way back."

UCLA (3-1) has its own issues after taking its first loss of the season. The Bruins could not stop Creighton's runs. The Blue Jays had a 16-point surge in the first half and a 14-0 run sandwiched around halftime.

"We just couldn't get stops," UCLA coach Steve Alford said. "We just couldn't get any stops that mattered. Offensively, we did a lot of good things. We had the inside-out going like we wanted. We just couldn't get the stops, and I thought that was the key."

With less than 24 hours to prepare, and sleep not much of an option, both coaches will have to figure out solutions and then pass them along to weary players to avoid back-to-back defeats in Kansas City.

"We have to continue to work on what we've got to do defensively," Alford said Monday. "We just have to go back to the hotel and watch some tape. ... We just have to try to do better tomorrow."

The Bruins will look for another strong performance from Aaron Holiday, who scored 25 points against the Bluejays. Thomas Welsh contributed 16 points and 13 rebounds for UCLA.

For Wisconsin, Ethan Happ is the early-season leader. He tops the team in points (19.0 per game), rebounds (9.8) and assists (3.8). Against Baylor, he finished with 23 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. He takes his leadership role seriously.

"We need to get guys to realize, myself included, that it's going to be a dogfight from the very start," he said.
