PREVIEW
Nova looks to keep momentum going for White Sox vs. Orioles

The Chicago White Sox turned in one of their best offensive performances of the young season on Monday night in Baltimore. They'll hope to find similar offensive success on Tuesday against the Orioles in the second game of this series.

Chicago set a season-high in runs in Monday's 12-2 victory over Baltimore. The White Sox scored four runs in three separate innings to take the first game of this series.

Jose Abreu finished 3-for-6 with a homer and James McCann went 3-for-5 with a homer in the win. Abreu had a two-run shot and finished with five RBI while McCann, the catcher, belted a two-run homer and ended up with four RBI. He also picked a runner off of third.

Abreu has struggled in the first part of the season, something he's done in his career, and came into the game batting .192. His average jumped 22 points in the win. If the White Sox can get his bat going, it certainly will help their offense.

Tim Anderson, who was in his second game back after a one-game suspension, helped out again on offense.

Anderson was leading the American League in hitting coming into the game and went 1-for-5 with two runs scored. He now has a .403 average so far this season.

The Orioles' problems at home continued. They fell to 1-10 in Baltimore this season and now have dropped four in a row -- losing a three-game weekend series to the Minnesota Twins in Baltimore before the White Sox came in.

Trey Mancini and Pedro Severino each drove in a run in the loss.

Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde's pitching staff has struggled mightily so far this season. The Orioles' 6.37 ERA after Monday's loss is by far the worst in the majors, and the bullpen had so much trouble that Hyde went to catcher Jesus Sucre to pitch in the ninth.

Interestingly, Sucre retired the White Sox in order, but Hyde has needed to call on the bullpen too many times already this season. He even used first baseman Chris Davis to pitch over the weekend in a similar spot against the Twins.

"We're about keeping our guys healthy and fresh, and you get caught in a bind (when) you can't do it because guys can't get through (innings)," Hyde told the media after Monday's game. "It's happened a few too many times this season."

Andrew Cashner (3-1, 4.97) will start for Baltimore against Ivan Nova (0-2, 6.23) of Chicago in Tuesday's matchup.

Cashner has a 1-2 career record versus Chicago with a 4.34 ERA. He pitched in five games -- three of which have been starts, and it's his first time against the Sox this year.

Nova is 8-4 in his career against the Orioles with a 4.98 ERA. He's made 17 starts and pitched in 18 contests; this will be his first against the Orioles in 2019.

Both teams made moves before Monday's game. For the White Sox, left fielder Eloy Jimenez headed back home to Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) due to the death of his grandmother, according to MLB.com, which also said that manager Rick Renteria thinks Jimenez will be back for this weekend's series against Detroit.

"He's close to his grandmother," Renteria said on MLB.com. "It's the right thing for him to do."

The White Sox put Jimenez on the bereavement list, and he is going to miss the three-game series in Baltimore. Chicago called up Nicky Delmonico from Triple-A Charlotte to replace Jimenez, and he played in Monday's win, going 0-for-3 with a run and a walk.

The Orioles, on the other hand, sent center fielder Cedric Mullins back to Triple-A Norfolk and recalled Stevie Wilkerson in his place. Wilkerson is more of a utility player and went 0-for-4 Monday night.

Baltimore also designated pitcher Josh Lucas for assignment.
