Manager: Craig Counsell (third season)
Who's new? 1B Eric Thames, 3B Travis Shaw, C Jett Bandy, RHP Neftali Feliz, RHP Joba Chamberlain, LHP Tommy Milone
Who's gone? 1B Chris Carter, C Martin Maldonado, OF Rymer Liriano, RHP Tyler Thornburg, RHP Blaine Boyer, LHP Chris Capuano
Projected lineup: 2B Jonathan Villar (.285, 19 HR, 63 RBI, 62 SB), SS Orlando Arcia (.219, 4, 17), LF Ryan Braun (.305, 30, 91, 16), 1B Eric Thames (.317, 40, 118, 13 SBs in Korea), RF Domingo Santana (.256, 11, 32), 3B Travis Shaw (.242, 16, 71 with Red Sox), CF Keon Broxton (.242, 9, 19, 23 SB), C Jett Bandy (.234, 8, 25 with Angels)
Rotation: Junior Guerra (9-3, 2.81 ERA), Zach Davies (11-7, 3.97), Matt Garza (4-8, 4.51), Wily Peralta (7-11, 3.86), Jimmy Nelson (8-16, 4.62) or Chase Anderson (9-11, 4.39) or Tommy Milone (3-5, 5.71 with Twins)
Key relievers: RHP Neftali Feliz (4-2, 3.52 with Pirates), RHP Corey Knebel (1-4, 4.68), RHP Carlos Torres (3-3, 2.73), RHP Jhan Marinez (0-1, 3.22), RHP Joba Chamberlain (0-0, 2.25 with Indians), RHP Jacob Barnes (0-1, 2.70), RHP Tyler Cravy (0-1, 2.86)
Hot spot: Fifth starter. Guerra and Davies began last season in the minors, then emerged as pleasant surprises in an otherwise long season. Now the Brewers have seven candidates for five rotation jobs. Nelson, who's led the staff in innings the last two years, might be wary of his two minor league options if he struggles out of the gate.
Outlook: No team was more active on the bases last season than the Brewers, whose 181 steals were the most by any team since 2009. Villar, Broxton and Hernan Perez were the primary thieves, and all return. The front office curiously chose not to bring back Carter after a 41-home run season. His replacement is Thames, who hasn't had a major league at-bat since 2012. Hitter-friendly Miller Park will do no favors to their pedestrian pitching staff, but the Brewers aren't expected to contend for at least another couple seasons. At least their offense will be entertaining in the meantime. | | CHICAGO CUBS: 2016: 103-58, won World Series
Manager: Joe Maddon (third season)

Who's gone? OF Dexter Fowler, IF/OF Jorge Soler, LHP Aroldis Chapman, LHP Travis Wood, RHP Trevor Cahill, RHP Jason Hammel
Projected lineup: LF Kyle Schwarber (.000, 0 HR, 0 RBI in two games), 3B Kris Bryant (.292, 39, 102), 1B Anthony Rizzo (.292, 32, 109), 2B Ben Zobrist (.272, 18, 76), SS Addison Russell (.238, 21, 95), RF Jason Heyward (.230, 7, 49, 11 SB), C Willson Contreras (.282, 12, 35), CF Jon Jay (.291, 2, 26 with Padres) or Albert Almora (.277, 3, 14 in 47 games)
Rotation: LH Jon Lester (19-5, 2.44 ERA), RH Jake Arrieta (18-8, 3.10), RH Kyle Hendricks (16-8, 2.13), RH John Lackey (11-8, 3.35), LH Brett Anderson (1-2, 11.91 in four games with Dodgers) or LH Mike Montgomery (4-5, 2.52 with Mariners and Cubs) or RH Eddie Butler (2-5, 7.17 with Rockies) or LH Rob Zastryzny (1-0, 1.13 ERA in eight games) or RH Alec Mills (0-0, 13.50 in three games with Royals)
Key relievers: RH Wade Davis (2-1, 1.87, 27/30 SV with Royals), RH Pedro Strop (2-2, 2.85), RH Hector Rondon (2-3, 3.53, 18/23 SV), RH Koji Uehara (2-3, 3.45, 7/9 SV with Red Sox), RH Carl Edwards Jr. (0-1, 3.75), RH Justin Grimm (2-1, 4.10), LH Brian Duensing (1-0, 4.05 with Royals)
Hot spots: Fifth Starter. Of all the candidates vying to replace Hammel, who signed with Kansas City as a free agent, most have plenty of upside but didn't log many innings last year. That includes Anderson, who had one productive season and one unproductive season for the Dodgers. Keep an eye on southpaw Montgomery, who tossed two shutouts as a starter for the Mariners in 2015, came to the Cubs last year in a midseason trade, then was effective as a reliever. Last time he was on the mound, he recorded the save in Game 7 of the World Series.
Outlook: There hasn't been a back-to-back champion this century. For opponents of the Cubs, that might be the most tangible nugget of hope. Most of the key players return from a powerhouse team that played historically good defense, got no fewer than 165 innings from each of its top five starters, and featured a deep lineup led by NL MVP Kris Bryant. In the bullpen, two-time All-Star Davis is capable of replacing closer Chapman if he's healthy. Among the Cubs' regular position players, only Zobrist and new center fielder Jay are over 30 ' everyone else is either entering or in the midst of his prime. This is a strong outlook. |
| | Brewers' Anderson chases a win in start against Cubs
CHICAGO -- Right-hander Chase Anderson remains unbeaten as he and the Milwaukee Brewers approach Saturday's scheduled start against the Chicago Cubs. But actual decisions -- wins or losses -- have been elusive as Anderson takes the mound for his ninth start of the season. Anderson (2-0, 3.43 ERA) hasn't had a decision in more than a month -- a 6-3 Brewers victory over the Cubs on April 17 at Miller Park. He worked five innings and gave up three runs (two earned) and seven hits in five innings. Despite the lack of decisions, there's not much wrong with the way he has been pitching for the National League Central leaders (25-18). "Chase has been doing a good job this year," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "His velocity is a little up this year, his curveball has improved, I think his cutter is a little pitch he's added to the mix. So he's pitched well. He's done a nice job." Anderson brings a run of five straight no-decisions into Saturday's game. The Cubs counter with right-hander Jake Arrieta (4-3, 5.44 ERA). Arrieta is another hard-luck pitcher as he also makes his ninth start and second against the Brewers. The 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner has struggled in last five starts with a 7.27 ERA (21 earned runs in 26 innings) after a 2-0 start and a 2.89 ERA in his first three appearances. His last time out he allowed four earned runs in six innings in a 5-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. "Right now, it seems the mistakes I'm making, they're not fouling them off, taking or swinging and missing," Arrieta told reporters. "They're making pretty solid contact. I'm going to continue to be aggressive. I'd like to not make any mistakes, but the ones I'm making right now are being taken advantage of." Arrieta is 7-4 in 13 career starts against Milwaukee with a 3.00 ERA. He posted the victory in his first 2017 meeting with the Brewers, allowing three earned runs and three hits and striking out a season-high 10 in a 7-4 win at Miller Park. Despite recent struggles, Arrieta is 44-17 with a 2.68 ERA since the 2015 season. The wins top the major leagues and the ERA is second to Clayton Kershaw. The Cubs (21-20) took two of three from the Brewers in their early April series at Miller Park and two of three when the teams met again between April 17-19 in Chicago. Milwaukee is 4-4 in Anderson's eight previous starts, including Monday's 6-5 Brewers loss at San Diego. Anderson worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs and six hits. He's 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA in four career starts against the Cubs. It's also possible that Anderson and Arrieta could wait another day to pitch. Initial forecasts call for Saturday thunderstorms, a far cry from sunny, summer conditions experienced earlier in the week in Chicago. |
