KEY GAME INFORMATION

Manager: Bud Black (first season)
Who's new? 1B Ian Desmond, IF Alexi Amarista, RHP Greg Holland, LHP Mike Dunn
Who's gone? Manager Walt Weiss, LHP Jorge De La Rosa, RHP Eddie Butler, LHP Boone Logan, C Nick Hundley, IF Daniel Descalso, OF Ryan Raburn
Projected lineup: CF Charlie Blackmon (.324, 29 HR, 82 RBI, 17 SB), 2B D.J. LeMahieu (.348, 11, 66, 11), 3B Nolan Arenado (.294, 41, 133), RF Carlos Gonzalez (.298, 25, 100), 1B Mark Reynolds (.282, 14, 53), LF David Dahl (.315, 7, 24) or Gerardo Parra (.253, 7, 39), SS Trevor Story (.272, 27, 72), C Tony Wolters (.259, 3, 30)
Rotation: RH Jon Gray (10-10, 4.61 ERA), RH Tyler Chatwood (12-9, 3.87), LH Tyler Anderson (5-6, 3.54), LH Kyle Freeland (6-3, 3.91 at Triple-A), RH German Marquez (1-1, 5.23)
Key relievers: Greg Holland (did not pitch in 2016), Adam Ottavino (1-3, 2.67, 7/12 SV), Mike Dunn (6-1, 3.40, 4/8 SV with Marlins), Jake McGee (2-3, 4.73, 15/19 SV), Jordan Lyles (4-5, 5.83), Chad Qualls (2-0, 5.23), Chris Rusin (3-5, 3.74), Carlos Estevez (3-7, 5.24, 11/18 SV)
Hot spots: Catcher and closer. Wolters was 23 years old and hadn't played a game above Double-A last year when the Rockies claimed him off waivers from Cleveland. Now he's the most experienced catcher on the Rockies' 40-man roster, having played 71 major league games. A pitch-framing specialist with rare agility behind the plate, Wolters must coax pitchers through Coors Field and its occasional malefactions. While Colorado's rotation is the best it's looked in years, the ninth inning could be an adventure. Seven pitchers recorded a save for the Rockies in 2016. Now, a man who hasn't thrown a competitive pitch since 2015 might be their best option. Holland, 31, saved 125 games for the Royals from 2013-15 before elbow surgery paused his career. Ottavino will close if Holland can't.
Outlook: The Rockies probably won't catch the Dodgers or Giants this season, but a .500 record or better would be a big boost for their rebuilding movement. Black skippered the Padres from 2007-15, then spent last year in the Angels' front office. His first task: keeping morale steady after a spate of injuries and illness struck the clubhouse. The Rockies' biggest offseason acquisition was veteran Desmond, but he'll miss the beginning of the season with a fractured hand. Pitcher Chad Bettis, who led the Rockies with 32 starts last year, is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for testicular cancer. Backup catcher Tom Murphy (hairline fracture in forearm) and outfielder Dahl (ribs) could also start the season on the DL. If they can get past these early hurdles, the Rockies will be competitive at worst and dangerous at best.
CINCINNATI: 2016: 68-94, fifth place
Manager: Bryan Price (third season)
Who's new? RHP Scott Feldman, RHP Drew Storen, RHP Lisalverto Bonilla, OF Ryan Raburn, OF Desmond Jennings, IF/OF Arismendy Alcantara
Who's gone? 2B Brandon Phillips, C Ramon Cabrera, RHP Dan Straily, RHP Ross Ohlendorf, RHP Alfredo Simon, LHP John Lamb, RHP Josh Smith
Projected lineup: CF Billy Hamilton (.260, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 58 SB), SS Zack Cozart (.252, 16, 50), 1B Joey Votto (.326, 29, 97), LF Adam Duvall (.241, 33, 103), RF Scott Schebler (.265, 9, 40), 3B Eugenio Suarez (.248, 21, 70), C Devin Mesoraco (.140, 0, 1 in 16 games), 2B Jose Peraza (.324, 3, 25, 21 SB)
Rotation: RH Anthony DeSclafani (9-5, 3.28 ERA), RH Scott Feldman (7-4, 3.97 with Astros and Blue Jays), LH Brandon Finnegan (10-11, 3.98), RH Tim Adleman (4-4, 4.00), RH Robert Stephenson (2-3, 6.08) or Cody Reed (0-7, 7.36) or Amir Garrett (2-5, 3.46 for Triple-A Louisville)
Key relievers: RH Raisel Iglesias (3-2, 2.53, 6/8 SV), RH Drew Storen (3-0, 3.44 with Mariners), RH Michael Lorenzen (2-1, 2.88), LH Tony Cingrani (2-5, 4.14, 17/23 SV), RH Jumbo Diaz (1-1, 3.14), RH Blake Wood (6-5, 3.99) Hot spot: Rotation. The Reds' rebuilding effort is just beginning to bear fruit on the mound. DeSclafani, 26, made a big leap in his second full season in 2016. Finnegan, 23, will try to do the same this year. If the next wave of pitchers isn't ready for the major leagues, Stephenson, Reed, Garrett, Sal Romano and Rookie Davis would make a mean rotation at Triple-A. Meanwhile, 40-year-old Bronson Arroyo will try to hold down a job like it's 2004.
Outlook: After trading Phillips to the Braves, only Votto and pitcher Homer Bailey remain from the Reds' last season as a contending team. Cincinnati was basically a .500 team (36-37) after the All-Star break last season, so maybe a return to respectability isn't far off. Hamilton and infielder Jose Peraza, electric on the bases and in the field, have breakout potential. There might not be another star on the roster besides Votto, but that's OK for now. With no veterans blocking their best prospects, the Reds can use this season to figure out what their system holds.
PREVIEW
Rockies look to continue road success at Reds

CINCINNATI -- The Colorado Rockies had to play a doubleheader on getaway day Thursday after Wednesday's game in Minnesota was rained out. The red-hot Rockies earned a split with the Twins and now head to Cincinnati where they'll begin a three-game series with the Reds at Great American Ball Park.

The weekend series features teams headed in opposite directions. Colorado (26-16) is 13-6 on the road, which was the best road record in the major leagues entering Thursday's action. Meanwhile, Cincinnati (19-21) has lost six straight after an encouraging start to the season.

In addition to taking on the rebuilding Reds, Friday also is a big day for the Rockies and shortstop Trevor Story, who will begin a minor-league rehab assignment at Triple-A Albuquerque. Story has been hitting and fielding ground balls with no issues and appears fully recovered from a shoulder strain.

"Trevor is feeling great," manager Bud Black told reporters Thursday. "His stamina is good enough for him to play. The only problem initially was whether or not he could extend his left arm enough to make plays. But he's totally ready to play."

Colorado's offense hasn't struggled much without Story, mostly due to Charlie Blackmon, who became the first leadoff man to have 30 RBIs in his team's first 40 games since Ian Kinsler had 40 for the Texas Rangers in 2009. Blackmon also is among the league leaders in hits and extra-base hits.

Left-hander Tyler Anderson (2-4, 6.43 ERA) will take the mound for the Rockies in the series opener. Facing the Reds for the first time in his career, Anderson is making his ninth start of the season. He's one of the few Colorado players not to have success away from Coors Field this season with a 7.78 ERA in four road starts.

Anderson has given up 17 earned runs in 19 2/3 innings on the road, where he's struggled throughout his career, going 1-6 with a 5.79 ERA in visiting parks.

Cincinnati (19-21) was a season-high four games over .500 and just a half-game out of first place in the National League Central before hitting the skids. The Reds returned home Thursday night after being swept by the Chicago Cubs in a three-game series at Wrigley Field in which they were outscored 24-15.

"I think it's pitching, starting pitching," Reds manager Bryan Price told MLB.com. "We score. We have, I think, a really good offensive team, and a really good defensive team. When we're pitching well, we win."

On Friday night, right-hander Lisalverto Bonilla will make his second start and third appearance for the Reds. Bonilla who was claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates in February, tossed his first career complete game in a 3-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park, allowing three earned runs with two walks and five strikeouts over eight innings.

Friday night will be Bonilla's first appearance against the Rockies, who are in the midst of a season-long 11-day, 10-game road trip.

Cincinnati has won five of its past six games versus Colorado, including a 3-1 series win at Coors Field May 30-June 2, 2016. It was the Reds' first series win against the Rockies in Denver since 2012. Cincinnati is 24-20 all-time against Colorado at Great American Ball Park.
