Manager: Mike Scioscia (18th season)
Who's new? C Martin Maldonado, 2B Danny Espinosa, INF Luis Valbuena, OF Ben Revere, OF Cameron Maybin, RHP Jesse Chavez, RHP Austin Adams, RHP Yusmeiro Petit
Who's gone? C Jett Bandy, C Geovany Soto, C Juan Graterol, OF Gregorio Petit, OF Rafael Ortega, RHP Jered Weaver, LHP C.J. Wilson, RHP Jhoulys Chacin, RHP Tim Lincecum, RHP Cory Rasmus, LHP Brett Oberholtzer
Projected lineup: 3B Yunel Escobar (.304, 5 HR, 39 RBI), RF Kole Calhoun (.271, 18, 75), CF Mike Trout (.315, 29, 100, 30 SB), DH Albert Pujols (.268, 31, 119), 1B C.J. Cron (.278, 16, 69) or Luis Valbuena (.260, 13, 40 in 90 games with Astros), LF Cameron Maybin (.315, 4, 43, 15 SB with Tigers), 2B Danny Espinosa (.209, 24, 72 with Nationals), SS Andrelton Simmons (.281, 4, 44, 10 in 124 games), C Martin Maldonado (.202, 8, 21 with Brewers) or Carlos Perez (.209, 5, 31)
Rotation: RH Garrett Richards (1-3, 2.34 in six starts), RH Matt Shoemaker (9-13, 3.88), LH Tyler Skaggs (3-4, 4.17), RH Ricky Nolasco (8-14, 4.42 with Twins and Angels), RH Jesse Chavez (2-2, 4.43 with Blue Jays and Dodgers) or RH Bud Norris (6-10, 5.10 for Braves and Dodgers)
Key relievers: RH Huston Street (3-2, 6.45, 9/12 SV), RH Cam Bedrosian (2-0, 1.12), RH Andrew Bailey (3-1, 5.36 6/7 SV for Phillies and Angels), RH J.C. Ramirez (2-1, 2.91), LH Jose Alvarez (1-3, 3.45), RH Austin Adams (0-0, 9.82 with Indians), RH Yusmeiro Petit (3-5, 4.30 with Nationals), RH Mike Morin (2-2, 4.37)
Hot spots: First base and fifth starter. Pujols started 23 games at first base last year, and will likely play fewer this year after offseason plantar fascia surgery. For now, Pujols is the primary DH, Cron is the first baseman, and Valbuena will begin the season on the DL with a strained hamstring. One problem: neither Cron (.698 OPS) nor Valbuena (.666) could hit lefties last year. The top candidates for fifth starter are similarly flawed. Chavez and Norris finished last season as relievers. Alex Meyer has six major league starts to his name. The Angels might need all of them at points in 2017.
Outlook: It's hard to be too optimistic about a team that's made one playoff appearance in seven years. Yet it's hard to be too pessimistic considering the hard-luck injuries that decimated the Angels in 2016, particularly on the pitching side. Still, 2017 figures to be a transition year. The back of the rotation is a patch job until Tommy John patients Andrew Heaney and Nick Tropeano return from rehab. The Angels will gain some financial freedom after the season, when Josh Hamilton finally comes off the books. Any positive momentum in the meantime would make Anaheim a more attractive destination for free agents. Getting back above .500 would be a realistic step in that direction; anything beyond that is a bonus | | CLEVELAND: 2016: 94-67, first place, AL champions, lost to Chicago Cubs in World Series.
Manager: Terry Francona (fifth season).
He's Here: 1B-DH Edwin Encarnacion, OF Austin Jackson, LHP Boone Logan, RHP Carlos Frias, OF Wily Mo Pena, CF Bradley Zimmer, SS Eric Stamets.
He's Outta Here: 1B-DH Mike Napoli, OF Coco Crisp, OF Rajai Davis, C Chris Gimenez, 1B Jesus Aguilar, OF Marlon Byrd, RHP Jeff Manship.
Projected lineup: SS Francisco Lindor (.301, 15 HRs, 78 RBIs, Gold Glove, league-leading 15 sac flies in first full MLB season), 2B Jason Kipnis (.275, 23, 82, career-high 156 games), LF Michael Brantley (.231, 0, 7 in 11 games following shoulder surgery; .310, 15, 84, MLB-best 45 doubles, 15 SBs in 2015), DH Edwin Encarnacion (.263, 42, AL-high 142 RBIs for Toronto), 1B Carlos Santana (.259, 34, 87, 99 BBs, 99 Ks), 3B Jose Ramirez (.312, 11, 76, played 4 positions) or Giovanny Urshela (.225, 6, 21 in 81 games for Cleveland), RF Brandon Guyer (.333, 2, 14 in 38 games with Indians; .241, 7, 18 in 63 games with Rays; led majors with 31 HBP) or Lonnie Chisenhall (.286, 8, 57), C Yan Gomes (.167, 9, 34 in 74 games due to shoulder injury), CF Tyler Naquin (.296, 14, 43) or Austin Jackson (.254, 0, 18 in 54 games with White Sox before left knee surgery).
Rotation: RH Corey Kluber (18-9, 3.14 ERA, 227 Ks, third in Cy Young voting), RH Carlos Carrasco (11-8, 3.32, 25 starts due to injuries), RH Danny Salazar (11-6, 3.87, 25 starts, limited in postseason by injury), RH Trevor Bauer (12-8, 4.26, 28 starts, began season in bullpen), RH Josh Tomlin (13-9, 4.40, 5.90 strikeout-to-walk ratio).
Key relievers: LH Andrew Miller (10-1, 1.45, 12 saves, 70 appearances with Yankees and Indians), RH Cody Allen (3-5, 2.51, 32/35 saves), RH Bryan Shaw (2-5, 3.24 in league-high 75 games; 70 games in each of past four seasons), RH Dan Otero (5-1, 1.53, 70 2/3 innings), LH Boone Logan (2-5, 3.69, 66 games with Rockies).
Hot Spot: Brantley's Right Shoulder. An All-Star in 2014, Brantley missed out on the fun last season as the Indians won the pennant without him. His return is vital for Cleveland as it tries to make another deep run because he can help provide lineup protection for Encarnacion and stabilize an outfield that was under constant change in 2016. Brantley may not hit for the same extra-base power he had in the past, but he could still offer a high average and excellent defense.
Outlook: With perhaps the league's deepest pitching staff, the Indians are an AL favorite and appear poised to return to the World Series. Last year, they exceeded expectations and built a 3-1 Series lead against the Cubs before losing three straight ' including a dramatic Game 7 at home. One elusive win from the franchise's first championship since 1948. This season, the Indians will try to finish the job. There are injury concerns with Brantley and Kipnis, who won't be ready for the start of the season because of shoulder inflammation. Ramirez could slide over to help fill in at second base. But the addition of Encarnacion finally gives Cleveland the intimidating, middle-of-the-order slugger the club has coveted since the glory days of Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez and Albert Belle. Cleveland is a baseball town again as Indians fans spent on tickets this winter and are rallying around the club the way they did back in the mid-1990s. Lindor is on the cusp of superstardom, and one of the Indians' top priorities should be signing him to a long-term deal while he's still affordable. |
| | Indians look to end Angels series with 7th straight win
CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians have been waiting for a streak like this all season. Thursday afternoon they will take a six-game winning streak, their longest of the season, into the final game of their three-game series with the Los Angeles Angels. The six-game winning streak followed a 1-5 road trip to Oakland and San Francisco coming out of the All-Star break. But then the Indians returned home, seemingly flipped the switch, and started piling up victories. On Thursday, they have a chance to sweep their seven-game homestand against Toronto, Cincinnati and the Angels. During their six-game winning streak, the Indians have outscored their opponents 50-18. "It's a contagious lineup right now. We're keeping the line moving, we're getting good at bats from everyone, and the pitching is on point. We're hitting on all cylinders," said Austin Jackson, who in the Indians' 10-4 win Wednesday night had two of Cleveland's 17 hits to raise his average to .327. The AL Central-leading Indians are a season-high nine games over .500 at 54-45. They need to keep on winning because second place Kansas City, only 1 1/2 games behind the Indians, has won eight games in a row. The Angels, meanwhile, have lost two in a row in Cleveland after winning three of their last four games against Boston and Washington. With a record of 49-53, the Angels are a distant fourth in the AL West, and there are five teams ahead of them in the race for the second wild-card spot. "We've got a lot of challenges ahead of us to get better," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "And we know what those challenges are. We've got to swing the bats better, hold our bullpen together, and our starting rotation has been patchwork from the beginning of the season." Playing Cleveland doesn't help matters. The Angels have lost seven in a row to the Indians dating back to June 12 of last season. They also have lost 11 of their last 12 games against the Indians, including each of their last nine games at Progressive Field. "We know who we are and that we've got to focus on the process," Scioscia said. "We just need to stay together, be more consistent with the basics and start playing more consistent baseball." One player who is doing more than his share is first baseman Luis Valbuena. Valbuena, who played for Cleveland from 2009 to 2011, has hit home runs in three consecutive games, and in the first two games in Cleveland, he is 4-for-8 with a double, two home runs and four RBIs. Nine of his last 12 hits have been for extra bases. The Angels' starter Thursday will be J.C. Romero (9-8, 4.38). In four July starts, Romero is 2-2 with a 3.52 ERA. He has made four career appearances against the Indians, all of them in relief. He has no record and a 5.06 ERA. Cleveland's starter will be Trevor Bauer (8-8, 5.58), who has struggled in recent starts. In three July starts, Bauer is 1-2 with an 8.44 ERA. In four career starts against the Angels, Bauer is 3-0 with a 3.14 ERA. |
