PREVIEW
Oakland ends good road trip with matinee at Cleveland

The Oakland Athletics won two of three from the Cleveland Indians earlier this month to enter their nine-game road trip with a bit of momentum.

After a brief stumble, the Athletics regained their footing to win a season-high five in a row heading into their series finale against the Indians on Wednesday afternoon in Cleveland.

Mark Canha belted a two-run homer and Jurickson Profar went deep for the second time in as many games as Oakland posted a 5-3 win on Tuesday.

Both teams could feature new wrinkles in their respective lineups for the series finale.

Khris Davis, who led the majors with 48 homers last season, was removed from Tuesday's tilt with what he told reporters is more of an oblique issue than a hip injury. He was placed on the 10-day injured list after the game and will have an MRI exam on Wednesday.

"He's even resigned himself that he probably needs to take the full 10 days off," manager Bob Melvin said. "He's a power hitter. He needs his lower half. He creates a lot of torque. That's where his power comes from."

Canha has stepped up since returning from the injured list with four homers. He hopes the same is true when Davis returns.

"It hurts," Canha said. "Khris is beloved on this team and is a big presence for us, and obviously we need him back as soon as possible. Hopefully, it will be a short break and he'll be better because we need him."

Cleveland manager Terry Francona told reporters that catcher Roberto Perez was diagnosed with a concussion.

Kevin Plawecki replaced Perez in the fifth inning on Tuesday for the Indians, who are expected to summon catcher Eric Haase from Triple-A Columbus to have him on standby. Haase is hitting .252 (22-for-107) with a team-high 11 homers and 19 RBIs in 29 games for Columbus.

"I don't need to play doctor, but it seems very mild," Francona said of Perez's concussion. "We'll send him home tonight, get him back here (Wednesday). We'll get Eric Haase here. We'll make a determination, do we put (Perez) on the (concussion list) ... or do we ride it out a couple days? We'll wait until (Wednesday), though."

Cleveland's scheduled Wednesday starting pitcher, right-hander Jefry Rodriguez (1-3, 3.45 ERA), surrendered season-high totals in runs (four) and homers (two) in 6 2/3 innings Friday in a 5-1 setback against the Baltimore Orioles.

That performance came on the heels of a better one in his lone career start versus Oakland, when Rodriguez permitted three runs on six hits in six innings of a 5-3 win on May 12. Matt Olson belted a solo homer in the sixth off the 25-year-old.

Stephen Piscotty is riding a 21-game on-base streak for the Athletics, who will turn to right-hander Frankie Montas (5-2, 2.67 ERA) on Wednesday.

Montas struck out a career-high 10 and came within an out of his first career complete game in a 7-2 victory at Detroit on Friday.

The 26-year-old Montas owns an 0-1 mark with a 3.86 ERA in five career appearances (two starts) against Cleveland, with Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez each going 3-for-7 against him.

Montas received a no-decision against the Indians on May 10 despite yielding two runs and striking out seven in six innings.

Lindor has homered in back-to-back contests and is batting .333 (21-for-63) while hitting safely in 15 of his last 17 games.

Carlos Santana has belted a homer in three of his last four contests while Jason Kipnis carries an on-base streak of 16 games into the Wednesday matinee.
