Key relievers: RH Huston Street (3-2, 6.45, 9/12 SV), RH Cam Bedrosian (2-0, 1.12), RH Andrew Bailey (3-1, 5.36 6/7 SV for Phillies and Angels), RH J.C. Ramirez (2-1, 2.91), LH Jose Alvarez (1-3, 3.45), RH Austin Adams (0-0, 9.82 with Indians), RH Yusmeiro Petit (3-5, 4.30 with Nationals), RH Mike Morin (2-2, 4.37)
Hot spots: First base and fifth starter. Pujols started 23 games at first base last year, and will likely play fewer this year after offseason plantar fascia surgery. For now, Pujols is the primary DH, Cron is the first baseman, and Valbuena will begin the season on the DL with a strained hamstring. One problem: neither Cron (.698 OPS) nor Valbuena (.666) could hit lefties last year. The top candidates for fifth starter are similarly flawed. Chavez and Norris finished last season as relievers. Alex Meyer has six major league starts to his name. The Angels might need all of them at points in 2017.
Outlook: It's hard to be too optimistic about a team that's made one playoff appearance in seven years. Yet it's hard to be too pessimistic considering the hard-luck injuries that decimated the Angels in 2016, particularly on the pitching side. Still, 2017 figures to be a transition year. The back of the rotation is a patch job until Tommy John patients Andrew Heaney and Nick Tropeano return from rehab. The Angels will gain some financial freedom after the season, when Josh Hamilton finally comes off the books. Any positive momentum in the meantime would make Anaheim a more attractive destination for free agents. Getting back above .500 would be a realistic step in that direction; anything beyond that is a bonus
NY METS: 2016: 87-75, second place
Manager: Terry Collins (seventh season)
Who's new? No one of note
Who's gone? 1B James Loney, IF/OF Kelly Johnson, OF Alejandro De Aza, RHP Bartolo Colon, LHP Jonathon Niese
Projected lineup: CF Curtis Granderson (.237, 30 HR, 59 RBI), 3B David Wright (.226, 7, 14 in 37 games), LF Yoenis Cespedes (.280, 31, 86), RF Jay Bruce (.250, 33, 99 with Reds and Mets), 2B Neil Walker (.282, 23, 55), SS Asdrubal Cabrera (.280, 23, 62), 1B Lucas Duda (.229, 7, 23 in 47 games), C Travis d'Arnaud (.247, 4, 15)
Rotation: RH Noah Syndergaard (14-9, 2.60 ERA), RH Jacob deGrom (7-8, 3.04), RH Matt Harvey (4-10, 4.86), LH Steven Matz (9-8, 3.40), RH Zack Wheeler or RH Robert Gsellman (4-2, 2.42) or RH Seth Lugo (5-2, 2.67)
Key relievers: RH Jeurys Familia (3-4, 2.55, 51/56 SV), RH Addison Reed (4-2, 1.97), RH Hansel Robles (6-4, 3.48), LH Jerry Blevins (4-2, 2.79), RH Fernando Salas (3-7, 3.91)
Hot spots: First base and third base. Duda missed 115 games last season because of a stress fracture in his lower back. When healthy, the veteran first baseman slugged a career-low .714. Former first-round draft pick Dominic Smith, 21, could be in position to battle for the starting spot soon. He'll likely begin the season at Triple-A. Franchise third baseman Wright doesn't have a hot prospect pushing him out the door, but how much game does he have left? The perennial All-Star only began throwing a baseball in February after an eight-month recovery from neck surgery. Wright had a degenerative back and has only played 75 games the last two years. Getting a full season from him at age 34 would be a shock.
Outlook: The Mets' championship window opened with a surprise World Series run in 2015, and their front office seems convinced it's still open. The club invested four years and $110 million to keep Yoenis Cespedes in the outfield. The Mets also exercised club options on Jay Bruce and Jose Reyes, and brought Neil Walker back on a qualifying offer. The result? Almost everyone returns from a club that lost a wild-card game to the Giants last October. The franchise is oozing young pitching ' Syndergaard might be the best right-hander on the planet ' but another World Series appearance might be too much to expect from a team that ranked 25th in runs per game last season.
PREVIEW
Reeling Mets face red-hot Angels

NEW YORK -- The last thing the New York Mets need following their worst road trip this century is to face a team six days removed from its most recent loss.

However, that is what awaits the reeling Mets on Friday night, when they greet the red-hot Los Angeles Angels in the opener of a three-game interleague series at Citi Field.

Both teams were off Thursday. The Mets' losing streak hit seven games Wednesday, when Rafael Montero gave up a walk-off homer to Chris Herrmann in a 5-4, 11-inning loss to the host Arizona Diamondbacks. The Angels won their fourth straight, and completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox, with a 12-8 win at Angel Stadium.

The Mets (16-23) finished 0-6 on a road trip in which they endured three-game sweeps at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers and the Diamondbacks. It was New York's worst road trip since an 0-6 jaunt in September 1999.

The Mets overcame that skid to reach the National League Championship Series less than a month later. Manager Terry Collins, who has led New York to the playoffs each of the past two seasons, wasn't ready to raise white flag following the latest loss.

"It's very easy to unravel right now, and I will not let that happen here," Collins said. "We are not going to do that."

Collins and the Mets have to hope a day off cooled down the Angels, who have scored 28 runs during their winning streak. Nobody is hotter than reigning American League MVP Mike Trout, who homered for the fifth time in six games Wednesday and is on pace for a whopping 55 round-trippers.

"We got into good counts, passed the baton, got some clutch hitting with runners in scoring position," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Wednesday night. "And, obviously, Mike breaks up with a home run."

The Mets' Jacob deGrom is scheduled to oppose the Angels' Ricky Nolasco on Friday in a battle of right-handers.

DeGrom will be looking to become the first Mets starter to record an out in the seventh inning since he tossed seven innings against the Washington Nationals on April 28, a span of 17 games. In his most recent start Sunday, deGrom didn't factor into the decision after allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out seven over six innings in New York's 11-9 loss to the Brewers. This will be his first career appearance against the Angels.

Nolasco started the Angels' most recent loss last Saturday. He didn't factor into the decision after giving up three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out four over six innings as Los Angeles fell to the Detroit Tigers 4-3.

Nolasco is 6-8 with a 5.03 ERA in 26 games (24 starts) against the Mets, the team he has faced more than any other opponent.
