Phillies look to even series with Marlins

Starlin Castro will look to continue his hot hitting in Philadelphia as the visiting Miami Marlins battle the Phillies in the second game of a four-game series on Friday night.

The Marlins took the opener 3-1 in 10 innings Thursday as Castro drilled a two-run homer with two outs in the 10th off reliever Hector Neris.

Castro is hitting .303 with three homers and 15 RBIs for his career at Citizens Bank Park.

"It's fun. It's fun," Castro told Fox Sports Florida. "Coming here, we're playing a really good team in our division. We have to try to come in every day, compete and try to get a win."

Neil Walker led the way with three hits and Jorge Alfaro added a pair of hits for the Marlins in the extra-inning win.

The Marlins will hand the ball to starter Jose Urena to keep their momentum going. Urena is 1-3 with a 5.74 earned run average in five starts this season.

On April 14, Urena gave up just one run in seven innings against the Phillies. In Urena's last start Sunday, he allowed three runs in six innings in a 9-3 victory against Washington.

Urena has surrendered only three earned runs in 13 innings over his last two outings.

"It seemed like the sinker is getting more movement," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said of Urena. "Two in a row where you see him deeper into the game, handling innings and not letting things get away from him. I know that's the key with Jose. In the past, we've had trouble shutting down innings. I think the key is not letting things get away from him."

Urena is 3-4 in 11 career starts against the Phillies.

After going 2-5 on a seven-game road trip to Colorado and New York, the Phillies returned home and struggled offensively with only four hits. Bryce Harper (0 for 3) and Rhys Hoskins (0 for 4) weren't able to produce one hit on Thursday.

The Phillies are just 13-12 overall.

"There's no question our lineup isn't clicking like it can," Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said. "That's no excuse. We can perform better."

Right-hander Jerad Eickhoff (0-1, 3.60 ERA) will make his second start of the season. In his debut Sunday at Colorado, Eickhoff gave up seven hits and four runs in six innings in a 4-1 defeat.

Eickhoff began the season on the injured list.

"There was a lot of positives," Eickhoff said of his first start. "I can think of one or two negative things that affected the game in a pretty big way. But these are things I can control, I can adjust. It's a really positive thing to build on for sure."

The Phillies remain short-handed with a number of injuries, including shortstop Jean Segura, infielder Scott Kingery, center fielder Odubel Herrera and outfielder Roman Quinn.

Kapler is still searching for different combinations each night.

"I will have conversations with guys and say, 'If there's a day when your body's just a little bit tired, come to the ballpark at 5:30, get loose for the game, go out there and kick some (butt),' " Kapler told reporters. "And then the next day, get your work in. So there's this healthy balance of recovery and work. Finding the right balance is tricky."

Eickhoff is 2-3 with a 4.00 ERA in six career starts against the Marlins.
