Hot spots: Rotation and catcher. The Diamondbacks' rotation was atrocious in 2016, ranking 29th in MLB in ERA. But hey, maybe it wasn't all their fault. In his first year as general manager, Mike Hazen installed a 'pitching strategist' (Dan Haren) and three new catchers (former Angels Iannetta, Mathis and Hank Conger). Meanwhile, nine of the 10 pitchers who started a game for the Diamondbacks last year remain in the organization. It's a bold experiment in how to fix a pitching staff. Iannetta and Mathis can frame all the borderline pitches they want. At some point, the onus will fall on Greinke, Ray, Miller, Corbin and newcomer Walker to perform to their potential.
Outlook: It wasn't long ago that Arizona spent $206 million to coax Greinke to defect from the Dodgers. Now the Diamondbacks feel like a team on the brink of a complete rebuild. Even without Jean Segura, who led the National League in hits, the lineup will score enough to keep Arizona competitive. But what to make of the pitching staff? The rotation beyond Greinke could be anywhere from awesome to abysmal. The ninth inning belongs to 39-year-old Rodney and, if he fails, a who's-who list of failed former closers: Wilhelmsen, Jepsen or J.J. Hoover. The farm system is in poor shape. If things get worse before they get better, Greinke could be the first player traded.
PITTSBURGH: 2016: 78-83, third place
Manager: Clint Hurdle (seventh season)
Who's new? RHP Daniel Hudson, IF Phil Gosselin
Who's gone? IF Sean Rodriguez, OF Matt Joyce, SP Jeff Locke, SP Ryan Vogelsong, RP Neftali Feliz, C Eric Fryer
Projected lineup: 2B Josh Harrison (.283, 4 HR, 59 RBI, 19 SB), 1B Josh Bell (.273, 3, 19), RF Andrew McCutchen (.256, 24, 79), CF Starling Marte (.311, 9, 46, 47 SB), LF Gregory Polanco (.258, 22, 86), 3B Jung-ho Kang (.255, 21, 62), C Francisco Cervelli (.264, 1, 33), SS Jordy Mercer (.256, 11, 59)
Rotation: RH Gerrit Cole (7-10, 3.88 ERA), RH Ivan Nova (12-8, 4.17 for Yankees and Pirates), RH Jameson Taillon (5-4, 3.38), RH Chad Kuhl (5-4, 4.20), RH Drew Hutchison (1-0, 5.25 with Blue Jays and Pirates) or Steven Brault (0-3, 4.86) or Trevor Williams (1-1, 7.82) or Tyler Glasnow (0-2, 4.24)
Key relievers: LH Tony Watson (2-5, 3.06, 15/20 SV), RH Daniel Hudson (3-2, 5.22 with Diamondbacks), LH Felipe Rivero (1-6, 4.09 for Nationals and Pirates), RH Juan Nicasio (10-7, 4.50), LH Antonio Bastardo (3-0, 4.52 with Mets and Pirates), RH Jared Hughes (1-1, 3.03), LH Wade LeBlanc (4-0, 3.77 with Mariners and Pirates)
Hot spots: Rotation and closer. Right-hander Glasnow, 23, is a consensus top-25 prospect who made his major league debut last year. The Pirates would love to see him seize the fifth starter's job in camp, but right-hander Hutchison offers a more experienced option if Glasnow isn't ready. Watson became the closer after Mark Melancon was traded to Washington last summer, but his sinker/slider/changeup mix isn't typical ninth-inning stuff. Keep an eye on Rivero, a 25-year-old lefty acquired in the Melancon trade. His fastball actually gained velocity as last season wore on, eventually touching triple digits. Rivero might begin the season as the set-up man but his ascension to the ninth inning seems inevitable.
Outlook: The Pirates made some interesting tweaks after missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. They made no major trades, signed only two major league free agents (pitchers Nova and Hudson) and revamped Hurdle's coaching staff. They also moved their outfielders around: McCutchen goes from center to right, Marte from left to center, and Polanco from right to left. McCutchen is coming off the worst season of his career. So is ace right-hander Cole. The path back to the playoffs begins with the two stars bouncing back. If the team's other homegrown talent ' Taillon, Glasnow, Bell and Polanco ' continue their evolution, Pittsburgh should return to the postseason in 2017.
PREVIEW
Rotation replacements set to start for D-backs, Pirates

PITTSBURGH -- Pirates right-hander Jameson Taillon made his first rehab start Sunday on the way back from surgery to treat testicular cancer.

Taillon said he would make at least one more rehab start before returning to the Pittsburgh rotation, but it seems likely that despite his surgery being less than three weeks distant, he will be back sooner than later.

That means the window to impress as a starter may be closing for Trevor Williams.

Williams (2-3, 5.93 ERA) replaced Taillon in the rotation when the latter was placed on the disabled list and has gone 1-2 with a 6.27 ERA filing in. Those aren't fantastic numbers and are worse than the figures Williams put up as a long reliever earlier in the season, but they do compare favorable to some of the other Pirates' starters.

Tyler Glasnow gave up five runs in five innings on Sunday to leave him 2-4 with a 6.95 ERA in 10 starts. Chad Kuhl is 1-5 with a 6.29 ERA. So when Williams faces the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday, he will have a chance to make his case to remain in the starting staff -- something general manager Neal Huntington wouldn't rule out on Sunday.

"Obviously, we're thinking about it in the background and we're thinking about it internally, but not ready to begin to talk about that publicly at this point," he said.

Williams had one of his best outings of the season against the Diamondbacks on May 13. In his only career appearance against the club, he gave up one run and struck out four in five innings.

Williams' mound opponent Monday at PNC Park will be in a similar situation. Randall Delgado was forced into a starting role when Taijuan Walker landed on the disabled list with a blister on his right index finger on May 21.

Delgado (1-0, 3.82 ERA) has made some spots starts but hasn't been a regular member of a rotation since 2013, when he went 5-7 with a 4.26 ERA in 19 starts. He will be making his 50th major league start, and the way he handled his last one gave manager Torey Lovullo the confidence to give him the ball again.

"He's been locked in and throwing the ball very well," Lovullo said to Arizona Sports after making the decision on Friday.

His last time out, Delgado pitched four innings and allowed two runs (one earned) against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. He set season highs in innings pitched and pitches thrown (61).

Delgado has faced the Pirates 14 times in his career and is 0-1 with a 4.95 ERA. In three innings against Pittsburgh this season, he has allowed no runs on three hits and no walks while striking out two.

The Diamondbacks originally thought Walker would only have to miss one start, but the blister was still bothering him when he tried it out. He is expected to throw a simulated game Monday or Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

Arizona split a weekend series at Milwaukee, winning the first two before falling 6-1 on Saturday and 9-5 on Sunday. Pittsburgh lost two of three over the weekend to the visiting New York Mets, dropping a 7-2 decision Sunday night.
