KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHI WHITE SOX: 2016: 78-84, fourth place.
Manager: Rick Renteria (first season). He's Here: RHP Lucas Giolito, INF Yoan Moncada, LHP Derek Holland, RHP Reynaldo Lopez, C Geovany Soto, OF Peter Bourjos. He's Outta Here: Manager Robin Ventura, LHP Chris Sale, OF Adam Eaton, OF Austin Jackson, DH Justin Morneau, C Alex Avila, RHP Matt Albers.
Projected lineup: CF Leury Garcia (.229, 1, 5 in 18 games, 48 ABs; .313, 6, 35, 18 SBs in 84 games at Triple-A Charlotte) or Jacob May (.266, 1, 24, 19 SBs in 83 games at Triple-A Charlotte), SS Tim Anderson (.283, 9, 30), LF Melky Cabrera (.296, 14, 86), 1B Jose Abreu (.293, 25, 100), 3B Todd Frazier (.225, 40, 98), RF Avisail Garcia (.245, 12, 51), DH Matt Davidson (missed much of last season with broken right foot), C Omar Narvaez (.267, 1, 10), 2B Tyler Saladino (.282, 8, 38).
Rotation: LH Jose Quintana (13-12, 3.20 ERA), RH Miguel Gonzalez (5-8, 3.73), LH Derek Holland (7-9, 4.95 ERA in 22 games with Texas), RH James Shields (6-19, 5.85 in 33 starts with Padres and White Sox), LH Carlos Rodon (9-10, 4.04).
Key relievers: RH David Robertson (5-3, 3.47, 37/44 saves), RH Nate Jones (5-3, 2.29, 3 saves), LH Dan Jennings (4-3, 2.08), RH Zach Putnam (1-0, 2.30), RH Michael Ynoa (1-0, 3.00). Hot Spot: Triple-A Charlotte. With Giolito, Lopez and Moncada likely to begin the season in Triple-A, many White Sox fans might keep a closer watch on the Knights than the big league club. The development of the franchise's suddenly rich minor league system will help determine the trajectory of Chicago's new rebuilding project.
Outlook: Lots of losses and trades. Quintana and Frazier likely will be shipped out at some point this season, and Robertson also could be on the move in the right deal. The White Sox seem fully committed to a major overhaul, and they added several prospects when they traded away Sale and Eaton over the winter. But it could be a rough couple of years while general manager Rick Hahn tries to establish a more reliable pipeline of talent throughout the organization. In the meantime, the White Sox still have Anderson, who was impressive in his first major league stint last year. Abreu is going for his fourth straight season of at least 25 homers and 100 RBIs.
SEATTLE: 2016: 86-76, second place
Manager: Scott Servais (second season)
Who's new? LF Jarrod Dyson, SS Jean Segura, IF Danny Valencia, RF Mitch Haniger, C Carlos Ruiz, C Tuffy Gosewich, RHP Yovani Gallardo, LHP Drew Smyly, LHP Marc Rzepczynski, RHP Casey Fien, RHP Chris Heston
Who's gone? OF Seth Smith, SS Ketel Marte, C Chris Iannetta, OF Nori Aoki, RHP Taijuan Walker, RHP Nathan Karns, LHP Vidal Nuno, LHP David Rollins, RHP Tom Wilhelmsen
Projected lineup: LF Jarrod Dyson (.278, 1 HR, 25 RBI, 30 SB with Royals), SS Jean Segura (.319, 20, 64, 33 with Diamondbacks), 2B Robinson Cano (.298, 39, 103), DH Nelson Cruz (.287, 43, 105), 3B Kyle Seager (.278, 30, 99), C Mike Zunino (.207, 12, 31), 1B Danny Valencia (.287, 17, 51 with A's), RF Mitch Haniger (.229, 5, 17 in 34 games with Diamondbacks), CF Leonys Martin (.247, 15, 47, 24 SB)
Rotation: RH Felix Hernandez (11-8, 3.82), RH Hisashi Iwakuma (16-12, 4.12), LH James Paxton (6-7, 3.79), RH Yovani Gallardo (6-8, 5.42 with Orioles), LH Drew Smyly (7-12, 4.88 with Rays)
Key relievers: RH Steve Cishek (4-6, 2.81, 25/32 SV), RH Edwin Diaz (0-4, 2.79, 18/21), RH Nick Vincent (4-4, 3.73), RH Evan Scribner (0-0, 0.00 in 12 games), LH Marc Rzepczynski (1-0, 2.64 with A's and Nationals), RH Casey Fien (1-1, 5.49 with Twins and Dodgers)
Hot spots: First base and right field. Veteran Valencia has the first baseman's job for now, but Dan Vogelbach is the heir apparent who will begin the season at Triple-A. Vogelbach, 24, slimmed down this offseason ' a necessity when you're 6 feet tall, weigh 250 pounds and expect to play your first full major league season ' and might have more weight to lose. Valencia, 32, has never been a full-time first baseman in seven seasons. Haniger is known more for his glove than his bat, but he struggled (.713 OPS) in limited time at a hitter-friendly park in Arizona last year. Safeco Field won't be as kind. Cruz will play right field if Haniger doesn't.
Outlook: General Manager Jerry Dipoto has paired a staff of fly-ball pitchers with three rangy outfielders, an exercise in team-building he once tried with the Angels. Dipoto caused a stir by executing 40 roster transactions during the offseason, but is it possible he didn't do enough? Haniger has never been atop a major league depth chart. Pitchers Gallardo and Smyly are coming off shaky seasons in Baltimore and Tampa Bay, respectively. On paper, the Mariners look like a top-heavy team without much help in the minors if the bottom falls out. That was the case for Dipoto with the Angels too, and sometimes it worked out OK. More often it didn't.
PREVIEW
Pelfrey, Gallardo square off in Sox-M's tilt

SEATTLE -- They're no longer young prospects and they can't blow fastballs by hitters any longer.

But when it comes to durability, dependability and downright doggedness, Yovani Gallardo and Mike Pelfrey still have it.

The two right-handers, who have combined for 515 career major-league starts and 175 victories, are scheduled to take the mound Saturday night in Seattle, when the Mariners and Chicago White Sox continue their four-game series.

The 31-year-old Gallardo (2-3, 4.53 ERA) is the lone starting remaining from Seattle's projected Opening Day rotation, with Felix Hernandez, James Paxton, Hisashi Iwakuma and Drew Smyly all on the disabled list.

"It's been a weird year," said Gallardo, who also pitched for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic this spring. "With the injuries to the rotation, we've got to step up until the rest of the guys are healthy enough to join us."

Gallardo, acquired by the Mariners from Baltimore in an offseason trade, got his second victory of the season his last time out, pitching 6 1/3 innings of four-hit ball against Oakland, allowing three runs. He's 1-0 with a 1.06 ERA in three career starts against the White Sox.

A Gallardo-Pelfrey matchup might have been at its peak in 2010.

Pelfrey was a career-best 15-9 with a 3.66 ERA for the New York Mets, who drafted him in the first round (ninth overall) in 2005. Gallardo made his lone All-Star appearance that season when he was 14-7 with a 3.84 ERA for Milwaukee, which had taken him in the second round of the 2004 amateur draft.

Gallardo has the better career numbers, with a 110-86 record and 3.81 ERA versus Pelfrey's 65-95 and 4.58.

Saturday will be the second time the veterans are opposing each other. The other instance was July 1, 2009 in Milwaukee when Pelfrey pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings for the Mets while Gallardo struck out 12 and allowed one run in seven innings.

The 33-year-old Pelfrey (0-4, 5.70) has shown flashes of his old self in each of his past three starts, as h'?s opened with at least three scoreless innings each time.

He took a 3-0 lead into the fifth inning of his last start before giving up back-to-back home runs to the Los Angeles Angels? Kole Calhoun (a three-run shot) and Mike Trout.

"I felt better, but at the end of the day the results left a bad taste in my mouth," Pelfrey said.

The previous time out, against Minnesota, he led 2-0 until a allowing a three-run fourth.

And the outing before that, Pelfrey was locked in a scoreless duel for five innings against Kansas City before being undone by a three-run sixth.

"We've seen him throw and seen what happens when he gets a little long," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. "It's up to me to realize when he's got effectiveness issues, when he reaches that point. The last time was 4 2/3 innings. Hopefully, we're more keenly aware. And we hope to give him enough run support so he gets a chance to breathe a little bit."

Pelfrey was released at the end of spring training by the Detroit Tigers.

"I packed in two hours, got everything into the moving truck and started driving," Pelfrey said. "My agent called while I was on the road and said a couple of teams were interested. It was just about trying to find the right situation for me, looking to get back to the bigs."

Pelfrey signed with the White Sox as a minor-league free agent April 5. He made two starts in Triple-A Charlotte before being promoted April 22, the day after right-hander James Shields went on the disabled list with a right lat strain.

"I understand this is a business and teams have got to do what's best for them," said Pelfrey, who is 0-1 with a 4.42 ERA in three career starts against the Mariners. "And I've got to do what's best for me. No hard feelings, no regrets."
