Manager: Brian Snitker (second season)
Who's new? 2B Brandon Phillips, 2B Micah Johnson, C Kurt Suzuki, IF/OF Sean Rodriguez, SP Bartolo Colon, SP R.A. Dickey, SP Jaime Garcia
Who's gone? OF Mallex Smith, C A.J. Pierzynski, RHP Chris Withrow, RHP Ryan Weber
Projected lineup: CF Ender Inciarte (.291, 3 HR, 29 RBI, 16 SB), SS Dansby Swanson (.302, 3, 17), 1B Freddie Freeman (.302, 34, 91), LF Matt Kemp (.280, 12, 39 with Padres and Braves), RF Nick Markakis (.269, 13, 89), 2B Brandon Phillips (.291, 11, 64, 14 SB), 3B Adonis Garcia (.273, 14, 65), C Tyler Flowers (.270, 8, 41)
Rotation: RH Julio Teheran (7-10, 3.21), RH Bartolo Colon (15-8, 3.43 with Mets), LH Jaime Garcia (10-13, 4.67 with Cardinals), RH R.A. Dickey (10-15, 4.46 with Blue Jays), RH Mike Foltynewicz (9-5, 4.31)
Key relievers: RH Jim Johnson (2-6, 3.06 ERA, 20/23 SV), RH Arodys Vizcaino (1-4, 4.42, 10/14 SV), RH Mauricio Cabrera (5-1, 2.82), LH Ian Krol (2-0, 3.18), RH Jose Ramirez (2-2, 3.58), RH Josh Collmenter (1-0, 4.84 with Diamondbacks)
Hot spots: Second base and rotation. Phillips, acquired from the Reds in February, is a placeholder for prospect Ozzie Albies at second base. Albies, 20, won the Double-A Southern League batting title in 2016 and is a potential September call-up at least. The rotation is in a similar state of transition, but it's more complicated. Veterans Teheran, Colon, Dickey and Garcia have jobs for now. Youngsters Foltynewicz, Aaron Blair, Matt Wisler, Lucas Sims and Sean Newcomb are pushing to seize long-term spots.
Outlook: In the inaugural season at SunTrust Park, the Braves will try to crack .500 for the first time since 2013. Their rebuilding work isn't finished, but the front office added about $30 million in salary over the winter. That ought to be enough to make the Braves watchable again. Now, the veterans trying to extend their careers in Atlanta (Colon, Dickey, Phillips, Kemp) are almost as intriguing as the prospects. The sight of 23-year-old shortstop Swanson backing up 40-something pitchers Colon and Dickey could be something special. | | ST LOUIS: 2016: 86-76, second place
Manager: Mike Matheny (sixth season)
Who's new? OF Dexter Fowler, C Eric Fryer, LH Brett Cecil
Who's gone? 1B Brandon Moss, OF Matt Holliday, OF Jeremy Hazelbaker, RHP Jaime Garcia, RHP Seth Maness, RHP Jerome Williams
Projected lineup: CF Dexter Fowler (.276, 13 HR, 48 RBI, 13 SB with Cubs), SS Aledmys Diaz (.300, 17, 65), 1B Matt Carpenter (.271, 21, 68), RF Stephen Piscotty (.273, 22, 85), C Yadier Molina (.307, 8, 58), 3B Jedd Gyorko (.243, 30, 59), 2B Kolten Wong (.240, 5, 23), LF Randal Grichuk (.240, 24, 68)
Rotation: RH Carlos Martinez (16-9, 3.04 ERA), RH Adam Wainwright (13-9, 4.62), RH Mike Leake (9-12, 4.69), RH Michael Wacha (7-7, 5.09), RH Lance Lynn (did not pitch - Tommy John surgery)
Key relievers: RH Seung-hwan Oh (6-3, 1.92 ERA 19/23 SV), LH Kevin Siegrist (6-3, 2.77), RH Trevor Rosenthal (2-4, 4.46, 14/18 SV), LH Brett Cecil (1-7, 3.93 with Blue Jays), RH Jonathan Broxton (4-2, 4.30), RH Matt Bowman (2-5, 3.46), RH Miguel Socolovich (1-0, 2.00)
Hot spots: Rotation. The back end looked like a big leap of faith when spring training began. Wainwright and Wacha are coming off their worst seasons. Another 2013 World Series mainstay, Lynn, didn't pitch last season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. Then, on the first day of camp, 22-year-old right-hander Alex Reyes learned he needed Tommy John himself. That leaves a lot of question marks after ace Martinez ' more than any Cardinals staff has faced in years.
Outlook: This 40-man roster hints at a team in transition. Venerable 34-year-old catcher Molina is still St. Louis' biggest star. Reyes' injury hurts the youth movement, but the Cardinals are still stacked with talented 20-something sluggers ' Piscotty, Diaz, Gyorko and Grichuk ' who could emerge as household names. Adding Fowler's speed and patience should complement an already deep lineup. The pitching staff is a different matter. Barring a big resurgence from Wainwright, Lynn and Wacha (or a big trade) it's hard to see the Cardinals contending for more than a wild card spot in the Cubs' shadow. |
| | Hot Cardinals face Braves with eye on NL Central lead
ST. LOUIS -- For most of the season, the St. Louis Cardinals have been correctly panned for inconsistent play. But when they left Busch Stadium on Saturday night after a 6-5 win over the Atlanta Braves, they owned a season-high eight-game winning streak. And when they leave the ballpark after Sunday's series finale with Atlanta, it could be as the first-place team in the very winnable National League Central. St. Louis (61-56) crawled into a virtual first-place tie with the Chicago Cubs, thanks to their 6-2 loss at Arizona. While Chicago still officially leads by .001 percentage point, the Cardinals clearly have momentum on their side. Led by an offense that has scored 68 runs in its win streak, St. Louis has looked a lot more lively and viable than anyone else in the division. "I think all the hard work is paying off," said pitcher Carlos Martinez, who won his ninth game of the year Saturday night. "I have all the confidence in the world in our team. I think the change everyone has seen is the team is more unified. "Everyone's healthy, and everyone's supporting each other. I think that's the way we're going to keep it through the end of the season, and hopefully into the postseason." How sizzling has the Cardinals' offense been? Saturday night's game was their first in a week where they didn't score at least eight runs. They have had at least one inning with three runs or more in the last seven games. Six different players drove in runs Saturday night. There was timely situational hitting, a couple of solo homers and a spate of long, grinding at-bats that have come to characterize this team's best stretch of play in two years. Good starting pitching has been a feature of the streak as well. Michael Wacha (9-4, 3.70 ERA) will try to keep that trend going in the homestand finale. Wacha's 10-3 win at Kansas City on Tuesday night was his sixth in his last seven decisions dating to June 26. He gave up six hits and three runs in six innings, walking two and fanning five in a 96-pitch outing. He has pitched four times in his career against the Braves, going 0-1 with a 3.07 ERA. Wacha left a May 7 game in Atlanta with a 4-2 lead after six innings but settled for a no-decision when the bullpen coughed up the advantage in a 6-4, 14-inning St. Louis win. His opposite number three-plus months ago, knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (7-7, 4.03), will take the mound for the Braves. Dickey hasn't worked since Aug. 4, when he bagged a 5-3 win over Miami, allowing three hits and three runs in six innings with a walk and three strikeouts. Dickey gave up four runs in six innings in his start against the Cardinals in May, including a homer to Tommy Pham. He has faced the Cardinals eight times in his career, with six starts, posting a 3-1 record and 4.38 ERA. Atlanta (51-63) is looking to snap a five-game losing streak that has seen it drop two one-run games, including Saturday night's. "These guys give you a hard 27 outs," Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said of his team. "They never quit coming at you." |
