Manager: Clint Hurdle (seventh season)
Who's new? RHP Daniel Hudson, IF Phil Gosselin
Who's gone? IF Sean Rodriguez, OF Matt Joyce, SP Jeff Locke, SP Ryan Vogelsong, RP Neftali Feliz, C Eric Fryer
Projected lineup: 2B Josh Harrison (.283, 4 HR, 59 RBI, 19 SB), 1B Josh Bell (.273, 3, 19), RF Andrew McCutchen (.256, 24, 79), CF Starling Marte (.311, 9, 46, 47 SB), LF Gregory Polanco (.258, 22, 86), 3B Jung-ho Kang (.255, 21, 62), C Francisco Cervelli (.264, 1, 33), SS Jordy Mercer (.256, 11, 59)
Rotation: RH Gerrit Cole (7-10, 3.88 ERA), RH Ivan Nova (12-8, 4.17 for Yankees and Pirates), RH Jameson Taillon (5-4, 3.38), RH Chad Kuhl (5-4, 4.20), RH Drew Hutchison (1-0, 5.25 with Blue Jays and Pirates) or Steven Brault (0-3, 4.86) or Trevor Williams (1-1, 7.82) or Tyler Glasnow (0-2, 4.24)
Key relievers: LH Tony Watson (2-5, 3.06, 15/20 SV), RH Daniel Hudson (3-2, 5.22 with Diamondbacks), LH Felipe Rivero (1-6, 4.09 for Nationals and Pirates), RH Juan Nicasio (10-7, 4.50), LH Antonio Bastardo (3-0, 4.52 with Mets and Pirates), RH Jared Hughes (1-1, 3.03), LH Wade LeBlanc (4-0, 3.77 with Mariners and Pirates)
Hot spots: Rotation and closer. Right-hander Glasnow, 23, is a consensus top-25 prospect who made his major league debut last year. The Pirates would love to see him seize the fifth starter's job in camp, but right-hander Hutchison offers a more experienced option if Glasnow isn't ready. Watson became the closer after Mark Melancon was traded to Washington last summer, but his sinker/slider/changeup mix isn't typical ninth-inning stuff. Keep an eye on Rivero, a 25-year-old lefty acquired in the Melancon trade. His fastball actually gained velocity as last season wore on, eventually touching triple digits. Rivero might begin the season as the set-up man but his ascension to the ninth inning seems inevitable.
Outlook: The Pirates made some interesting tweaks after missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. They made no major trades, signed only two major league free agents (pitchers Nova and Hudson) and revamped Hurdle's coaching staff. They also moved their outfielders around: McCutchen goes from center to right, Marte from left to center, and Polanco from right to left. McCutchen is coming off the worst season of his career. So is ace right-hander Cole. The path back to the playoffs begins with the two stars bouncing back. If the team's other homegrown talent ' Taillon, Glasnow, Bell and Polanco ' continue their evolution, Pittsburgh should return to the postseason in 2017. | | TORONTO: 2016: 89-73, second place
Manager: John Gibbons (10th season)
Who's new? 1B/DH Kendrys Morales, C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, IF/OF Steve Pearce, IF Lourdes Gurriel, LHP J.P. Howell, RHP Joe Smith
Who's gone? 1B/DH Edwin Encarnacion, OF Michael Saunders, C Josh Thole, C Dioner Navarro, OF Junior Lake, RHP R.A. Dickey, LHP Brett Cecil, RHP Joaquin Benoit
Projected lineup: 2B Devon Travis (.300, 11 HR, 50 RBI), 3B Josh Donaldson (.284, 37, 99), RF Jose Bautista (.234, 22, 69), DH Kendrys Morales (.263, 30, 93 with Royals), SS Troy Tulowitzki (.254, 24, 79), C Russell Martin (.231, 20, 74), 1B Justin Smoak (.217, 14, 34), CF Kevin Pillar (.266, 7, 53, 14 SB), LF Ezequiel Carrera (.248, 6, 23)
Rotation: RH Marco Estrada (9-9, 3.48 ERA), LH J.A. Happ (20-4, 3.18), RH Marcus Stroman (9-10, 4.37), RH Aaron Sanchez (15-2, 3.00), LH Francisco Liriano (8-13, 4.69 with Pirates and Blue Jays)
Key relievers: RH Roberto Osuna (4-3, 2.68, 36/42 SV), RH Jason Grilli (6-4, 3.64), RH Joe Biagini (4-3, 3.06), LH J.P. Howell (1-1, 4.09 with Dodgers), RH Joe Smith (1-4, 3.82 with Angels), LH Aaron Loup (0-0, 5.02)
Hot spots: bullpen. The Blue Jays signed only a couple high-profile free agents (retaining Bautista, adding Morales) and brought in many lower-profile veterans mostly to compete for bullpen jobs. Howell and Smith, signed to low-risk deals, are all but guaranteed jobs. But what of Dominic Leone, Mat Latos, Mike Bolsinger, Lucas Harrell and Leonel Campos? Toronto seems to be crowd-sourcing its middle innings with low-risk, right-handed options. Up to a half-dozen pitchers could be competing for one or two jobs.
Outlook: The Blue Jays' roster is enviably balanced, albeit among the older ones in the league. Toronto led the AL in ERA last year. Their entire starting rotation returns, and their veteran bullpen is set up well to support second-year closer Osuna. Ironically, the youngest player in the Jays' starting lineup, 26-year-old Travis, has the biggest health concern of the bunch. He didn't appear in a spring training game until recently because of offseason knee surgery. Encarnacion, who was good for .270/30/100 every year, will be missed. The question now is whether Morales (33), Bautista (36), Tulowitzki (32) and Martin (34) are still close enough to their primes to power another playoff run. |
| | Blue Jays continue series vs. Pirates without Marin
TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays will find out Saturday how long they will be without catcher Russell Martin as they continue their three-game interleague series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Rogers Centre. Martin suffered a strained left oblique and left Friday's 4-2 loss to the Pirates after the first inning. He was scheduled for an MRI exam on Saturday. Oblique injuries often require considerable time to heal. "That was a huge loss," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "He's our anchor back there." He was replaced by Raffy Lopez, who joined the Blue Jays from Triple-A Buffalo a week ago, and did a solid job, going 1-for-3. The Blue Jays already have catchers Miguel Montero and Luke Maile on the disabled list so they might recall Mike Ohlman from Buffalo. "Russ is the rock," said Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman, who allowed four unearned runs in eight inning Friday. "He's the staple that's always there. He plays through a bunch of bumps and bruises each and every day, and he's the definition of a warrior." There is further intrigue Saturday. The Blue Jays will start right-hander Chris Rowley, a West Point graduate, who will make his major league debut. Pittsburgh will start right-hander Trevor Williams (5-4, 4.17 ERA). The Pirates also had an injury loss during the game Friday, but the situation does not seem as serious as Toronto's. Center fielder Andrew McCutchen hit an RBI double in Pittsburgh's four-run third inning and was later removed for Starling Marte in that inning with a sore left knee. McCutchen is listed as day to day left patellofemoral discomfort. "I was just taking my secondary lead and my knee kind of grabbed," McCutchen said. "It was just kind of weird. If your knee could get a cramp, that's what it felt like. I feel better now. They ran some tests, everything looked good. It's just going to be see how I feel tomorrow and go from there. ... If I feel any type of hindrance behind my knee then I'll take another day. We're moving in the right direction tonight. I'm walking fine, not limping or anything." The Blue Jays are playing with a short roster because Kendrys Morales and Norichika Aoki have not been available for the past two games because of illness. Their status for Saturday was not certain. Rowley, 26, was 6-6 with a 2.29 ERA in 27 games (11 starts) between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo this season. He was 3-4 with a 2.82 ERA in 10 games (six starts) with the Bisons. Rowley was not drafted out of West Point and the Blue Jays signed him to a minor league contract in June, 2013. After nine games in the Gulf Coast League that year, he had to begin his active duty obligation with the U.S. Army. Last year, Rowley applied for his release from active duty and joined Class A Dunedin. Williams is 4-2 with a 3.66 ERA in his past 16 starts since allowing eight runs (six earned) in three innings in his first start, May 8 in Los Angeles. He has allowed a home run in only three of his past 14 outings and has worked into the sixth inning in seven of his past nine starts. He will be making his 24th appearance of the season, and his 18th start. Williams has never faced the Blue Jays. He is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in two career interleague starts. |
