KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA CLIPPERS: LAST SEASON: 48-34, lost 4-2 to Golden State in Western Conference first round.
COACH: Doc Rivers (seventh season with Clippers, 307-185; 21st season overall, 894-658).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: F Kawhi Leonard (30.5 ppg with Toronto), F Paul George (23.7 with Oklahoma City), G Patrick Beverley (7.6), G Landry Shamet (9.1), C Ivica Zubac (8.9).
KEY LOSSES: G Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, F Danilo Gallinari, F Wilson Chandler, G-F Garrett Temple, G Sindarius Thornwell, G Tyrone Wallace.
KEY ADDITIONS: Leonard, George.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: It's all about newcomers Leonard and George. They'll be the top two options on offense. Leonard is coming off a season in which he led Toronto to its first NBA championship (and earned his second ring). Leonard returning home was contingent upon pairing with George, also an LA-area native. George, who finished third in MVP voting last season, can guard nearly any position while being a huge scoring threat. Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell, the NBA's top bench-scoring duo last season, will get starter-level minutes again.
OUTLOOK: No more watching other teams go deep in the playoffs. The NBA's balance of power has shifted to the Clippers, who have never advanced beyond the second round let alone won a championship. All that's expected to change behind Leonard and George, both regarded as two of the best two-way players in the league. The Clippers had to give up talented veteran Gallinari and star-in-the-making Gilgeous-Alexander, but they kept Harrell, Williams and re-signed Beverley, whose sole job will be using his tenacious D to keep others from scoring. The Clippers are favorites to win it all, a stunning shift for a franchise that has spent much of its existence as a punch line.
ATLANTA: LAST SEASON: 29-53, missed playoffs.
COACH: Lloyd Pierce (second season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Trae Young (19.1 ppg, 8.1 apg), G Kevin Huerter (9.7 ppg), F De'Andre Hunter (No. 5 overall pick), F John Collins (19.5 ppg, 9.8 rpg), C Damian Jones (5.4 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: C Dewayne Dedmon, G Kent Bazemore, F Omari Spellman
KEY ADDITIONS: Hunter, Jones, F Cam Reddish, F Jabari Parker, G Evan Turner, G Allen Crabbe, F Chandler Parsons, C Bruno Fernando.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Young and Collins are two of the NBA's top young players, while Huerter shows plenty of promise, so the key to this season will be how well they mesh with two more first-round picks, Hunter and No. 10 choice Reddish. Hunter figures to start right away, while Reddish will get plenty of playing time off the bench. Also keep an eye on Parker, the No. 2 overall pick in 2014 by the Milwaukee Bucks. While he has yet to develop into the star everyone expected, Parker is still just 24 years old and has averaged 15.1 points per game over his five-year career. The Hawks, who are focused on player development, hope they can flush out Parker's game. Finally, the Hawks will send out 42-year-old Vince Carter for his record 22nd ' and final ' season in the NBA. Carter showed last season he's still got game, but he won't get as many minutes in his last hurrah as he serves more of a coach-mentor role to all the young players.
OUTLOOK: The Hawks showed promise in Pierce's first season but this franchise is still in the midst of a major rebuilding job. Atlanta might have an outside shot at slipping into the playoffs, but would probably be better off getting another crack at the draft lottery. General manager Travis Schlenk has been acquiring over-priced players that other teams wanted to get off the books. Parsons ($25.1 million), Turner ($18.6 million) and Crabbe ($18.5 million) are in the final year of their contracts, which means 2020 is the year to really start paying attention to the Hawks.
PREVIEW
Hawks seek revenge against road-weary Clippers

The Atlanta Hawks will try to prevent a repeat of two months ago when the Los Angeles Clippers come to town on Wednesday.

The Clippers hammered the Hawks 150-101 on Nov. 16 in Los Angeles. Atlanta was playing without John Collins, who was in the midst of a suspension for the violating the league's drug-abuse policy, but that mattered little.

The Hawks surrendered a season high in points that night -- a mark eclipsed 14 days later when they gave up 158 to Houston -- and suffered their widest margin of defeat. It was also the largest margin of victory by either team in the all-time series.

Beyond that, Los Angeles has won the past four meetings between the clubs in Atlanta.

Atlanta has played better at times but remains unpredictable. For example, after getting drubbed by the Detroit Pistons by 33 points on Saturday, the Hawks pressed the defending NBA champion Toronto Raptors to the final minute before losing 122-117 two days later.

The Clippers have been playing at a high level and hold the second-best record in the Western Conference. The Clippers, who have won four straight, could be a bit weary since they will be on the second leg of a back-to-back set, and they were pushed to the limit before putting away the Dallas Mavericks 110-107 on Tuesday night. They have swept two of eight back-to-backs this season.

Kawhi Leonard, who scored 36 on Tuesday, has scored at least 30 points in each of the past six games. It is the longest 30-plus streak by a Clippers player since World B. Free had an 11-game stretch in 1980. Free and Bob McAdoo are the only players in franchise history to score 30-plus in five or more consecutive games.

"Making shots. Simple as that," Leonard told reporters after the game.

The Wednesday game will also mark a homecoming for Atlanta product Lou Williams. He continues to be a 3-point shooting machine, and he recently moved into sole possession of fifth place on the team's all-time 3-point list. He sank three treys on Tuesday.

"I feel like I can make 100 in a row once I make one," Williams said. "I feel like I can make them any time after that."

Leonard said of Williams, "Very talented scorer -- fearless, just goes out there and plays the game."

The Clippers may again be without Paul George, who has missed six consecutive games due to a left hamstring issue. George scored 37 against the Hawks in the first meeting.

The Hawks have received the desired results with the acquisition of backup point guard Jeff Teague. He has totaled 17 points and eight assists in the two games since he was obtained from the Minnesota Timberwolves.

"To be able to use his voice in the locker room is important," Atlanta coach Lloyd Pierce said. "They will look to him just because of who he is and what he's done in this league and his familiarity with Atlanta, so I'm going to look to him as well."

But there's no question that the Hawks live and die with starting point guard Trae Young. The 21-year-old averages 29.2 points and already has seven 40-point games this season. In the Monday loss to the Raptors, Young had 42 points and 15 assists, his fourth career 40-10 game.
