KEY GAME INFORMATION
SACRAMENTO: LAST SEASON: 27-55, missed playoffs.
COACH: Dave Joerger (third season, sixth NBA season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G De'Aaron Fox (11.6 ppg), G Buddy Hield (13.5 ppg), F Justin Jackson (6.7 ppg), F Marvin Bagley III (rookie, Duke), C Willie Cauley-Stein (12.8 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: G George Hill, F Garrett Temple, G Vince Coleman
KEY ADDITIONS: Bagley, G Ben McLemore, F Nemanja Bjelica
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Joerger declared Fox to be Sacramento's franchise player and is building the offense around the young point guard. Fox had flashes of brilliance during an up-and-down rookie season but has more scoring help around him this year. Bagley is the wild card who will start at power forward and may see significant time in the post when the Kings go with a smaller lineup.
OUTLOOK: The Kings have a lot of work to do to end their 12-year postseason drought. There are question marks across the board, specifically regarding defense and rebounding. Hield and McLemore will split time in the backcourt alongside Fox until Bogdan Bogdanovic returns from a pair of offseason knee surgeries but the key will be down low. Bagley provides a little more scoring which should help offset Cauley-Stein's inconsistencies.
BOSTON: LAST SEASON: 55-27, lost in Eastern Conference finals.
COACH: Brad Stevens (sixth season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Jaylen Brown (14.5 ppg), G Kyrie Irving (24.4 ppg), F Jayson Tatum (13.9 ppg), F Gordon Hayward (2.0 ppg; played one game last season), C Al Horford (12.9 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: G Shane Larkin, C Greg Monroe
KEY ADDITIONS: F Robert Williams, G Brad Wanamaker, G P.J. Dozier
PLAYERS TO WATCH: All eyes are on Hayward coming off his surgery and rehab from the gruesome left ankle injury he suffered in the season opener last season. After nearly a year away from playing 5-on-5 basketball, he says he's back to 100 percent. The same is true for point guard Kyrie Irving following a pair of surgeries on his left knee that caused him to miss the end of the regular season and playoffs. Irving's also pledged his allegiance to Boston, saying recently that he intended to re-sign with the Celtics in 2019.
OUTLOOK: With LeBron James now in the Western Conference, the Celtics enter this season as the presumptive favorites in the East. The injuries to Hayward and Irving gave Brown and Tatum a chance to shine and both young emerged as budding stars. After re-signing reserve guard Marcus Smart, Boston enters the season with a roster that's nearly fully intact from a year ago. The Celtics were one of the league's top defensive teams a last season and are expected to be there again under the defensive-minded Stevens. The challenge for the sixth-year
COACH will be getting this talented group to share the ball.
PREVIEW
Kings attempt to avenge recent loss to Celtics

One team that has struggled on the road encounters another that's struggled at home when the Sacramento Kings visit the Boston Celtics on Thursday night.

The contest is a rematch of a game that featured a crazy finish last Wednesday night in Sacramento.

In that matchup, the Celtics appeared headed for a win before Gordon Hayward fouled the Kings' Buddy Hield on a 3-point attempt with 7.6 seconds remaining. Boston led by three points at the time.

Hield made all three free throws to tie the score.

Without taking a timeout, the Celtics inbounded the ball to Hayward, who dribbled the length of the court and nailed a short jumper from the left side of the key for the game-winner with two seconds left.

"I almost lost us the game with the foul," Hayward admitted to reporters afterward. "I was trying to get that one back for us."

The clutch shot highlighted a nice trip for Hayward that mirrored his team's success.

After having gone five straight games without scoring in double figures, the reserve averaged 19 points as the Celtics swept Golden State, Sacramento and the Los Angeles Lakers to open the four-game trip.

Hayward then was held to eight points in the Celtics' 140-115 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers that sent the team home.

That's where Boston has lost four of its last six, including defeats at the hands of Portland and Houston on the Celtics' last three-game homestand.

The Kings, meanwhile, haven't experienced any recent luck in Boston, having lost 10 straight dating back to January of 2007.

Seeking a hot streak in an attempt to make up a deficit in their pursuit of a playoff spot in the West, the Kings have alternated losses and wins in their last four games, including going 1-1 to start their current four-game trip.

They've lost 12 of their last 16 on the road, and now greet the daunting task of going back-to-back at Boston and Philadelphia.

The Kings hope to get star rookie Marvin Bagley III back for at least one of the two trip-ending games.

Bagley sprained his left knee in a home loss to Milwaukee on Feb. 27 and has missed the club's last five games.

He was given medical clearance to return to physical activities during the Kings' trip, and now awaits the green light for game action from the Sacramento medical staff.

"It's always tough not playing. That's what we signed up for: to play," he expressed to reporters during the trip. "I'm trying to be the best teammate and best person I can be while I'm out, learning and being supportive to the guys who are playing."

Nemanja Bjelica has taken on a greater role in Bagley's absence. He's recorded double-doubles in each of the first two games of the trip, going for 13 points and 10 rebounds in a win Saturday against New York, before contributing 15 points and 12 rebounds to Monday's loss at Washington.

The double-doubles were just his sixth and seventh of the season.
