KEY GAME INFORMATION
NEW ORLEANS: LAST SEASON: 33-49, finished tied for 12th in Western Conference.
COACH: Alvin Gentry (fifth season with Pelicans, 145-183; 17th season overall, 480-553).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Lonzo Ball (9.9 ppg), G Jrue Holiday (21.2), F Brandon Ingram (18.3), F Zion Williamson (rookie), C Derrick Favors (11.8).
KEY LOSSES: F Anthony Davis, F Julius Randle, G Elfrid Payton.
KEY ADDITIONS: F Williamson, F Ingram, G Ball, C Favors, G J.J. Redick, G Nickeil Alexander-Walker, C Jaxson Hayes.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Williamson was the No. 1 overall pick in last summer's NBA draft, was a highlight machine at Duke and has looked fearless in his first NBA preseason ' taking the ball to the hoop against the best interior defenders in the league and scoring more than 20 points in multiple games. The 6-foot-6, 285-pound rookie is a social media phenomenon and filling arenas everywhere he goes. But the additions of Ball and Redick will be important to New Orleans as well.
OUTLOOK: Of the Pelicans' four new starters brought in by Griffin, one was picked No. 1 overall this summer and two Ingram and Ball were picked second overall within the previous three years by the Lakers before being packaged with Josh Hart and draft picks in a trade sending Davis to Los Angeles. Combined with savvy veterans like Holiday and Favors, not to mention Redick off the bench, there are high hopes in New Orleans that the Pelicans are trending upward and might even contend for a playoff spot this season. The Pelicans also expect 2019 first-round picks Alexander-Walker and Hayes to contribute this season.
CHARLOTTE: LAST SEASON: 39-43, missed playoffs.
COACH: James Borrego (second season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Terry Rozier (9.0 ppg), G Dwyane Bacon (7.3 ppg), F PJ Washington (rookie), F Miles Bridges (7.5 ppg), C Cody Zeller (10.1 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: PG Kemba Walker, SG Jeremy Lamb.
KEY ADDITIONS: Rozier, Washington.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: All eyes will be on Rozier. He replaces Walker, a three-time All-Star and the franchise's career scoring leader. Walker averaged 25.6 points last season, so the Hornets will need to find production from players like Bridges and Bacon. Rozier is expected to put up better assist numbers than Walker but doesn't figure to come close to matching his scoring output. One big question for the Hornets will be who they turn to in late-game situations to make big shots. Walker and Lamb have handled that role in recent years, but both are gone. Borrego says it will be something the team must figure out moving forward.
OUTLOOK: Make no doubt about it, the Hornets are in complete rebuilding mode and most view them as a sure lottery team next season. This season isn't about wins and losses, but rather getting young players as many quality minutes as possible. That means Bridges, Bacon, Washington and Malik Monk will see plenty of playing time while aging veterans Nic Batum and Marvin Williams are likely relegated to reserve roles. Charlotte lacks NBA experience, but its youthful roster will provide plenty of energy and enthusiasm and could give some opponents problems. This team may not be very talented, but it will compete.
PREVIEW
Hornets look to rediscover their offense vs. Pelicans

The Charlotte Hornets have addressed certain issues that have popped up across the opening weeks of the season, primarily on defense.

Perhaps they'll be shifting gears a bit for Saturday night's game against the visiting New Orleans Pelicans at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C.

For the first time this season, the Hornets enter a game after significant shortcomings on offense.

"Every night there's going to be a different look," coach James Borrego told reporters. "You've got to adjust and adapt."

Defense had been a sticking point for the Hornets. Yet it was offensive snags that were glaring in their most recent game.

The Hornets had a three-game winning streak snapped with Thursday night's 108-87 home loss to the Boston Celtics on an emotional night as all-time Hornets scoring leader Kemba Walker returned to Charlotte.

"This was a new wrinkle," Borrego said after the game of some of the offensive challenges he saw. "We got to the rim, we just couldn't finish. We just couldn't generate enough momentum offensively."

The Hornets have generally liked the vibe presented by second-year guard Devonte Graham, who ran into some trouble against Boston. Borrego said Graham will be viewed differently by opponents if he maintains production, so he'll have to adjust.

Graham is averaging a team-best 17 points per game off the bench, though Borrego said he's not inclined to move him into the starting lineup yet.

On the plus side for Charlotte, some of the emphasis on defense might be making a difference.

"I see us progressing the right way," Borrego said. "I think our physicality is picking up."

P.J. Washington has given the Hornets a defensive presence at the rim, one of the developments at the end of the court.

"Nobody's hanging their heads," Borrego said. "I think we're getting better defensively. We're a ways away from where we want to be, but I think we're moving in the right direction defensively."

The Pelicans have lost three straight games after Friday night's 122-104 home loss to the Toronto Raptors. New Orleans is off to a 1-7 start, trying to work in younger players.

One of them is rookie Nickeil Alexander-Walker.

"It's a long season," Alexander-Walker said. "I'm trying to be prepared as much as I can to be better."

Pelicans guard Frank Jackson has scored in double figures in four consecutive games. A couple of ailing New Orleans players, Lorenzo Ball and J.J. Redick, were cleared for Friday night's game and they played. But their statuses are bound to be a topic again in Charlotte as the team has games on consecutive nights.

Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said the team must stop falling into deep deficits.

"You're playing uphill," Gentry said. "I've been really, really disappointed in our transition defense. We've got to get back."

Saturday night's game would have been the first visit as a pro to the Carolinas for prized rookie Zion Williamson of the Pelicans. He's from South Carolina and played one season of college basketball for Duke in North Carolina. Williamson remains out after suffering a preseason knee injury.

For Charlotte, the game will be the third home outing in a row and part of a six-game stretch with five home games.
