KEY GAME INFORMATION
ATLANTA: LAST SEASON: 29-53, missed playoffs.
COACH: Lloyd Pierce (second season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Trae Young (19.1 ppg, 8.1 apg), G Kevin Huerter (9.7 ppg), F De'Andre Hunter (No. 5 overall pick), F John Collins (19.5 ppg, 9.8 rpg), C Damian Jones (5.4 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: C Dewayne Dedmon, G Kent Bazemore, F Omari Spellman
KEY ADDITIONS: Hunter, Jones, F Cam Reddish, F Jabari Parker, G Evan Turner, G Allen Crabbe, F Chandler Parsons, C Bruno Fernando.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Young and Collins are two of the NBA's top young players, while Huerter shows plenty of promise, so the key to this season will be how well they mesh with two more first-round picks, Hunter and No. 10 choice Reddish. Hunter figures to start right away, while Reddish will get plenty of playing time off the bench. Also keep an eye on Parker, the No. 2 overall pick in 2014 by the Milwaukee Bucks. While he has yet to develop into the star everyone expected, Parker is still just 24 years old and has averaged 15.1 points per game over his five-year career. The Hawks, who are focused on player development, hope they can flush out Parker's game. Finally, the Hawks will send out 42-year-old Vince Carter for his record 22nd ' and final ' season in the NBA. Carter showed last season he's still got game, but he won't get as many minutes in his last hurrah as he serves more of a coach-mentor role to all the young players.
OUTLOOK: The Hawks showed promise in Pierce's first season but this franchise is still in the midst of a major rebuilding job. Atlanta might have an outside shot at slipping into the playoffs, but would probably be better off getting another crack at the draft lottery. General manager Travis Schlenk has been acquiring over-priced players that other teams wanted to get off the books. Parsons ($25.1 million), Turner ($18.6 million) and Crabbe ($18.5 million) are in the final year of their contracts, which means 2020 is the year to really start paying attention to the Hawks.
DENVER: LAST SEASON: 54-28, lost 4-3 to Portland in Western Conference semifinals.
COACH: Michael Malone (fifth season with Nuggets, 173-155; seventh season overall, 212-222).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Jamal Murray (18.2 ppg), G Gary Harris (12.9), F Paul Millsap (12.6), C Nikola Jokic (20.1), G Will Barton (11.5).
KEY LOSSES: G Isaiah Thomas, F Trey Lyles, C Thomas Welsh.
KEY ADDITIONS: F Jerami Grant, C Bol Bol, F Michael Porter Jr.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Porter was the 14th overall pick in 2018 and missed all of last season as he recovered from back surgery. He skipped the Summer League in Las Vegas due to a balky knee. Now, he's healthy and ready to contribute. A healthy Porter gives the Nuggets another dimension on the perimeter, and another piece to add to the core of Murray, Harris, Jokic and Millsap.
OUTLOOK: The Nuggets have improved every season since Malone took over, going from 33 wins his first season to 40, 46 and 54 last season when they earned the No. 2 seed in the West. They didn't make any splashy moves in the offseason although they did bring back Millsap, picking up his $30 million option and agreed on a $170 million extension for Murray. Behind MVP-candidate Jokic, the Nuggets are a legit title contender.
PREVIEW
Hawks hope to end skid vs. streaking Nuggets

The questions about Nikola Jokic and his lack of aggressiveness hounded Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone last week. Jokic, the best player on the team and the only all-star, was deferring when Denver needed him to impose his will.

After the last two games those questions are starting to fade. Jokic has hit two game-winning jumpers in the final seconds and carried the Nuggets to a four-game winning streak heading into Tuesday's matchup with the Atlanta Hawks.

Jokic has always been a team-first player and at times has been reluctant to be the go-to guy. He has become that player after hitting a 15-foot jumper to beat Philadelphia on Friday, capping a franchise-best 21-point, fourth-quarter comeback, and then draining a turnaround jumper with 3.3 seconds left against Minnesota on Sunday.

"We just know we can count on him," teammate Will Barton said after the 100-98 win over the Timberwolves on Sunday. "We just know he's going to deliver for us."

The Hawks have a player who is willing to take the big shots in Trae Young, but Atlanta hasn't been able to turn that into many wins. The Hawks have lost three straight and six of their last seven, with the latest setback coming in overtime at Portland on Sunday.

It was the first in a five-game Western Conference road swing for Atlanta, and it doesn't get any easier against Denver. While the Nuggets are deep and can get scoring from different areas -- five players are averaging double figures in scoring -- the Hawks get a majority of their offense from three players -- Young (26.3 points, 8.4 assists per game), Jabari Parker (17.6 points) and John Collins (17 points a game).

Atlanta's depth took a hit when Collins was suspended by the league for 25 games for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA anti-drug program. He has served three games of that suspension.

In his absence the Hawks need to find offense from somewhere else. Parker has tried to fill that void, averaging 26 points in the last two games. The former No. 2 overall pick is trying to establish himself with Atlanta, and it's a work in progress.

"I can't say I'm reaching my expectations if we aren't winning," he said after Sunday's overtime loss. "Just trying to keep that mentality and hopefully we bounce back against Denver."

It will be tough. After a couple of losses in which Malone questioned his team's effort, the Nuggets have bounced back. Not only is Jokic providing heroics, but guard Jamal Murray has played well and Barton's play has been vital over the past two games.

He scored 20 in the win over Philadelphia on Friday and then hit two 3-pointers in overtime Sunday to end a stretch of 8 minutes, 3 seconds without a point for Denver. He then ran a two-man game with Jokic to set up the winning shot against the Timberwolves.

"He's just such a complete player," Malone said of Barton after Sunday's win. "That's why that last play, I wanted to put the ball into his hands. ... Will had it going. I wanted Will and Nikola to make the play."
