KEY GAME INFORMATION
DETROIT: LAST SEASON: 41-41, lost in first round of Eastern Conference playoffs.
COACH: Dwane Casey (second season, 11th NBA season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Reggie Jackson (15.4 ppg), G Bruce Brown (4.3 ppg), G Tony Snell (6.0 ppg), F Blake Griffin (24.5 ppg), C Andre Drummond (17.3 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: G Wayne Ellington, G Ish Smith.
KEY ADDITIONS: G Derrick Rose, G Tony Snell.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: There are no illusions about Rose still being an MVP candidate, but he averaged 18 points a game last season and could be a real X-factor for Detroit. The Pistons have relied on the trio of Griffin, Drummond and Jackson for a while now, and Jackson has been the most erratic member of that group. If Rose gives Detroit more production at point guard, that could be a big plus for the Pistons, although his health is always a concern.
OUTLOOK: Griffin was simply terrific last season, re-establishing himself as one of the game's stars, but his injury woes popped up again right around playoff time. Detroit would love to manage his minutes in a way that keeps him fresh for the end of the season, but that won't be easy if the Pistons are on the playoff bubble like last season. Another postseason berth is certainly possible, and if things break right, maybe Detroit can get a more favorable seed and win a round, but the gap between the Pistons and the conference's top teams remains formidable.
NEW ORLEANS: LAST SEASON: 33-49, finished tied for 12th in Western Conference.
COACH: Alvin Gentry (fifth season with Pelicans, 145-183; 17th season overall, 480-553).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Lonzo Ball (9.9 ppg), G Jrue Holiday (21.2), F Brandon Ingram (18.3), F Zion Williamson (rookie), C Derrick Favors (11.8).
KEY LOSSES: F Anthony Davis, F Julius Randle, G Elfrid Payton.
KEY ADDITIONS: F Williamson, F Ingram, G Ball, C Favors, G J.J. Redick, G Nickeil Alexander-Walker, C Jaxson Hayes.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Williamson was the No. 1 overall pick in last summer's NBA draft, was a highlight machine at Duke and has looked fearless in his first NBA preseason ' taking the ball to the hoop against the best interior defenders in the league and scoring more than 20 points in multiple games. The 6-foot-6, 285-pound rookie is a social media phenomenon and filling arenas everywhere he goes. But the additions of Ball and Redick will be important to New Orleans as well.
OUTLOOK: Of the Pelicans' four new starters brought in by Griffin, one was picked No. 1 overall this summer and two Ingram and Ball were picked second overall within the previous three years by the Lakers before being packaged with Josh Hart and draft picks in a trade sending Davis to Los Angeles. Combined with savvy veterans like Holiday and Favors, not to mention Redick off the bench, there are high hopes in New Orleans that the Pelicans are trending upward and might even contend for a playoff spot this season. The Pelicans also expect 2019 first-round picks Alexander-Walker and Hayes to contribute this season.
PREVIEW
Pelicans looking for more effort against Pistons

The New Orleans Pelicans are one of the worst teams in the NBA.

Coach Alvin Gentry said they stopped competing during a 46-point loss to Dallas on Saturday, their eighth consecutive defeat.

Perhaps they can learn something from the visiting Detroit Pistons, their opponent Monday night whose last performance represented a significant bounce-back effort.

"I don't think we competed," Gentry said after the 130-84 loss to the Mavericks. "When they got separation, I didn't think we competed. I think that's the worst thing in the world to do, (is) to stop competing.

"So, it's a terrible game, a poorly played game, a poorly coached game, (and) all of us got to take responsibility. I take as much responsibility as they do, because I've got to find a way to get them playing at the highest level that they can and competing, and they didn't do that."

The Pelicans overhauled their roster in the offseason, and they have adjusted to a series of injuries. As a result, they don't have a stable lineup or rotation and no identity.

"We control our own destiny," Gentry said. "We've got to be the ones that compete. We've got to be the ones that play hard. We've got to be the ones that (don't) turn it over. We've got to be the ones that rebound. We've got to find the open guy. All of those things right there.

"We don't want to become the pin cushion for the NBA -- and the way we're doing it right now, that's where we're headed -- we'll be the pin cushion for the NBA. Everybody will come in and think they can get a win. Everybody will think at home they're going to get a win, and that's the worst thing you can be in this league."

The Pistons also have a poor record and were similarly discouraged after a 127-103 loss to division rival Milwaukee on Wednesday, but they bounced back to beat Indiana on Friday.

Detroit was tied with the Pacers before scoring the final seven points in a 108-101 home victory.

The decisive run began with a little more than a minute remaining when Derrick Rose made an acrobatic basket from the lane.

Indiana tied the score before Rose fed Blake Griffin for a 3-pointer with 41 seconds left. Rose added another basket to put the Pistons in control.

"He was the MVP (in 2011) for a reason," Griffin said of Rose. "He's very poised with the ball in his hands -- doesn't get rattled, doesn't get sped up, really, especially in late game. That was really, really good execution, about as well as we could've done it."

Andre Drummond contributed his fifth 20-20 game of the season, finishing with 25 points and 22 rebounds.

"I think we definitely played tough," Drummond said. "Everybody, one through 12, the guys that played, when they came in the game they sustained the same toughness and the outcome was a win. We played our (backsides) off in that fourth quarter and came out with a great win."
