KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHICAGO: LAST SEASON: 27-55, missed playoffs.
COACH: Fred Hoiberg (fourth season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: Kris Dunn (13.4 ppg), G Zach LaVine (16.7 ppg), F Justin Holiday (12.2 ppg), F Jabari Parker (12.6 ppg, Milwaukee), C Robin Lopez (11.8 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: G Jerian Grant, G David Nwaba
KEY ADDITIONS: Parker, F Wendell Carter Jr., F Chandler Hutchison
PLAYERS TO WATCH: F Lauri Markkanen is expected to miss the first few weeks because of a high grade lateral elbow sprain he suffered in practice. From Finland, Markkanen, averaged 15.2 points and 7.5 rebounds in 68 games as a rookie last season. The Bulls are counting on LaVine to show he can be the cornerstone piece they envisioned when they acquired him along with Dunn and the rights to Markkanen from Minnesota for Jimmy Butler in the 2017 draft night trade. He was limited to 24 games last season, missing the first 42 while recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee and then sitting out the final 14 because of tendinitis in the same knee. That didn't stop Chicago from matching Sacramento's four-year, $80 million offer sheet for LaVine.
OUTLOOK: Though the Bulls hardly look like contenders in the Eastern Conference, the potential to make a jump is there. That hinges on improvement from Markkanen, LaVine and Dunn, Parker staying healthy and contributing, and maybe Carter chipping in after being drafted with the No. 7 overall pick.
PHILADELPHIA: LAST SEASON: 52-30, lost in Eastern Conference semifinals.
COACH: Brett Brown (sixth season)
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Ben Simmons (15.8 ppg), G JJ Redick (17.1 ppg), F Robert Covington (12.6 ppg), F Dario Saric (14.6 ppg), C Joel Embiid (22.9 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: F Marco Belinelli, F Ersan Ilyasova
KEY ADDITIONS: F Wilson Chandler, G Zhaire Smith, G Landry Shamet PLAYER TO WATCH: Markelle Fultz was the No. 1 pick of the 2017 draft and was expected to team with Simmons and Embiid to form a Big Three nucleus. Fultz instead was a big bust. Fultz' pitiful rookie year derailed by a mysterious shoulder injury, a broken shot and confidence issues. He played the first four games, missed 68 games because of injury, then was persona non grata in the postseason. He said he took 150,000 shots with his shot doctor this summer and even made a 3-pointer in the preseason after not making one last season.
OUTLOOK: The Sixers underwent their roster-stripping 'Process' because they were tired of being mediocre with no realistic hope of improvement. But if Fultz doesn't make a leap, they'll be stuck as a 50-win team that can't get past the second round of the playoffs. There are worse things, but the end result of the Process was supposed to be a championship and fans are getting restless.
PREVIEW
Sixers look to bounce back against Bulls

Fresh off an ugly defeat in their season debut at Boston on Tuesday's Opening Night, the Philadelphia 76ers will go for their first win of the season on Thursday in their home opener against the visiting Chicago Bulls at Wells Fargo Center.

What was billed as a potential Eastern Conference Finals preview -- and a rematch of the teams' Eastern Conference semifinals showdown last year -- went south in the second quarter for the 76ers on Tuesday. After going into the second quarter tied at 21, the Celtics outscored the Sixers by five in the second (26-21), six in the third (30-24) and seven in the fourth (28-21), handing Philadelphia a 105-87 loss to start the season.

It was such a poor performance that when asked what the team needed to work on, Ben Simmons cut off the interviewer, saying, "Everything. Everything. Everything. We've got to knock the rust off."

For Simmons, that means his free-throw shooting, as he went 5 of 11 from the line. For the rest of the Sixers, that means their 3-point shooting (19.2 percent as a team) and turnovers (16 as a team).

"It was our first game but there are no excuses," said center Joel Embiid, who had 23 points on 9-of-21 shooting and added 10 rebounds. "We did not execute offensively.... We did not move the ball at all. We had a few games and a lot of practices to work on what we were supposed to do and we didn't do it."

The Bulls open their season looking to integrate new faces, including first-round draft pick Wendell Carter Jr., while improving on last season's 27-win season, the team's worst mark in 14 years.

"The challenge for us is to make sure we stay together through the good times and the bad," head coach Fred Hoiberg told reporters. "There's going to be a time -- I can pretty much promise you (Thursday) -- we're going to hit some adversity. You've got to find a way to battle through it."

Already facing adversity this season is Jabari Parker, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2014 draft who signed a two-year, $40-million deal with his hometown Bulls during the offseason. Hoiberg announced on Wednesday that Parker would not begin the season in the starting lineup, as power forward Bobby Portis earned a starting nod. Even with budding star Lauri Markkanen and his scoring prowess out until at least late-November with an elbow injury, Hoiberg did not feel Parker's scoring punch was more important than Portis' contributions.

"The way we went out early in games and competed, I like the way (the lineup) looked," Hoiberg said. "We felt Bobby gave us a great start. And we got Jabari going a little bit in that last game, running some different things with him as the facilitator."

The 76ers are coming off a night in which 2017 No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz had just five points on 2-of-7 shooting, while J.J. Redick had 16 off the bench. So they could be looking at some lineup changes themselves if the Game 1 loss leads to more defeats.

"It was a very disjointed game for the first game," Sixers head coach Brett Brown said. "I give Boston credit, they forced a lot of that. We had an off night for sure. but we're excited to go back to Philadelphia and incrementally grow this."
