KEY GAME INFORMATION
BOSTON: LAST SEASON: 49-33
COACH: Brad Stevens (seventh season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Kemba Walker (25.6 ppg), G Gordon Hayward (11.5), F Jaylen Brown. (13.0), F Jayson Tatum (15.7), C Enes Kanter (13.7)
KEY LOSSES: G Kyrie Irving, F/C Al Horford, F Marcus Morris, G Terry Rozier.
KEY ADDITIONS: Walker, Kanter, G Romeo Langford, F Grant Williams, G Carsen Edwards.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: It starts with Walker, who jumped at the chance in free agency to join a perennial playoff team. Following Kyrie Irving's departure to Brooklyn, it will also give Walker the opportunity to do what Irving couldn't: lead the Celtics to an NBA Finals. He'll need help, though. And that will again put the spotlight on youngsters Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Both took small steps backward last season as infighting and chemistry issues plagued the team. Now, both will have key roles, much like they did two seasons ago when Irving missed the playoffs and they helped get the team to the Eastern Conference finals. It's an especially big year for Brown. The Celtics have until Oct. 21 to decide whether to extend his contract for another season or let him become a restricted free agent next summer.
OUTLOOK: The Celtics are going to have to tweak their style of play a little without Irving or Horford. Irving was their chief scorer and Horford played a huge role facilitating offense in the half court as well as on defense. Kanter is a big man that can run, which should fit in nicely with the up-tempo style this athletic roster is built for. Whether this team is ultimately able to be a threat to win the East will depend on how well Walker leads and if the starting unit gets enough support from its youthful group of reserves.
SAN ANTONIO: LAST SEASON: 48-34, lost 4-3 to Denver in Western Conference first round.
COACH: Gregg Popovich (24th season, 1245-575).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Dejounte Murray (missed last season with knee injury), G Bryn Forbes (11.8 ppg), G DeMar DeRozan (21.2), F LaMarcus Aldridge (21.3), C Jakob Poeltl (5.5).
KEY LOSSES: None
KEY ADDITIONS: F DeMarre Carroll, F Trey Lyles, G/F Keldon Johnson, F Luka Samanic
PLAYERS TO WATCH: DeRozan spent most of last season processing a trade that unexpectedly sent him to the Spurs and away from the Toronto Raptors, the franchise he pledged his devotion to ' then watched them win a title. Murray's injury also forced DeRozan to become the team's main distributor for the first time in his career. DeRozan set a career high with 6.2 assists per game but also had his second-lowest scoring average in six seasons. Murray is back and spent the offseason sending video of specific plays to show the 30-year-old guard how he could help him score more easily.
OUTLOOK: The Spurs continue to get younger and faster while trying to maintain their veteran presence and corporate knowledge. The latter received a huge boost with the addition of Hall of Famer Tim Duncan as an assistant coach. Duncan's knowledge of the Spurs' system, work ethic and camaraderie should help the team's development as it attempts to an establish an identity separate from but similar to the Big Three era spearheaded by Duncan that led to five NBA championships. Murray's return along with the return of White, expected emergence of Lonnie Walker IV and addition of Carroll should make the Spurs among the best wing defenses in the league.
PREVIEW
Spurs look to continue dominance vs. surging Celtics

For the Boston Celtics to extend their winning streak to seven games, they'll have to do something they've done only once over the past eight years: beat the San Antonio Spurs.

The task becomes even taller on the road as they travel to San Antonio to face LaMarcus Aldridge & Co. on Saturday night. The Celtics last won in San Antonio in March 2011 before proceeding to drop 14 of their next 15 to Gregg Popovich's squad.

Boston enters Saturday atop the Eastern Conference standings at 6-1. The Celtics handily beat the Charlotte Hornets, 108-87, on Thursday night, but many on the team feel there's still room for improvement.

"We've been winning, of course, but I don't think we've really put together a full game yet," guard Kemba Walker said. "We're just playing in spurts right now. We just need to get better, and we will."

Walker was the focus Thursday in his first game back to Charlotte following eight seasons with the franchise. He got off to a slow start, missing his first six shots, before heating up in the third to finish with 14 points.

"It's really hard," coach Brad Stevens said of the emotional night for Walker. "He had the right idea coming into the game but you knew right after they played that (pregame tribute) video, that probably was going to be a tough start."

Jayson Tatum carried the offense with 23 points, while Gordon Hayward followed a career-high-tying 39 points Tuesday with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Aldridge scored 39 of his own Thursday, leading the Spurs to a 121-112 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The victory snapped a two-game skid for San Antonio, which has won five of its first eight to begin the season.

Aldridge went 19 of 23 from the floor after being held to single-digit scoring in two of his four previous games.

"I definitely put the work in," he said. "Just waiting for my shot to come back. The first one felt good, after that I just tried to stay with it."

Aldridge was further boosted by improved play from point guard Dejounte Murray, who had committed seven turnovers between the back-to-back losses. He limited it to two on Thursday while dishing out a career-high 10 assists.

"I've got to stop being sloppy," Murray said.

The Spurs' dominance over the Celtics extends beyond the decade: San Antonio is 44-13 in their matchups since 1990. Boston coach Stevens has bested Popovich only once, at home in a 108-94 win in October 2017.

The Celtics are getting closer to 100 percent after big man Enes Kanter (knee) was upgraded to questionable before ultimately sitting out the game against Charlotte. Kanter has missed the team's past six games with the injury.

Meanwhile, Boston got swingman Jaylen Brown back against the Hornets, and he scored 12 in the win. Brown had missed three games with a leg infection that he said required five hospital trips.

"I'm glad it's behind me now," he said.
