KEY GAME INFORMATION
DALLAS: LAST SEASON: 33-49, finished tied for 12th in Western Conference.
COACH: Rick Carlisle (12th season with Mavericks, 470-416; 18th season overall, 751-627).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Luka Doncic (21.2 ppg), G Delon Wright (12.2 with Memphis), G-F Justin Jackson (8.2), F Kristaps Porzingis (sidelined by knee injury), C Dwight Powell (10.6).
KEY LOSSES: F Dirk Nowitzki, G Devin Harris, C Salah Mejri.
KEY ADDITIONS: Wright, G Seth Curry, F Isaiah Roby.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The world will be watching the Euro pair of Doncic and Porzingis, literally. The Mavericks are headliners internationally now that the 20-year-old rookie of the year from Slovenia and the 7-foot-3 Latvian are finally getting to play together. Dallas held Porzingis out for the last two months last season after the blockbuster trade that brought him from New York, even though he could have played. Their debut together is even more intriguing since it's Dallas' first season without Nowitzki, the German superstar who retired after setting an NBA record by playing all 21 seasons with the same franchise. The biggest question is who among the role players will emerge. Keep an eye on Wright. The Mavericks liked him in the 2015 draft. AD
OUTLOOK: The Mavericks wanted to sign a significant piece in free agency after the trading-deadline addition of Porzingis, who had just been named a 2018 All-Star before the knee injury that sidelined him for 20 months. They had to settle on Wright as a restricted free agent in a sign-and-trade with Memphis, so Dallas will lean heavily on Doncic and Porzingis while trying to get back to the playoffs after missing three straight seasons. It's the longest stretch without the postseason for the franchise since it was among the worst in sports coming out of the 1990s. It won't be easy in the West. The Mavericks will exceed expectations if they contend for a playoff spot.
UTAH: LAST SEASON: 50-32, lost 4-1 to Houston in Western Conference first round.
COACH: Quin Snyder (sixth season, 227-183).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Mike Conley (21.1 ppg), G Donovan Mitchell (23.8), F Bojan Bogdanovic. (18.0), F Joe Ingles (12.1), C Rudy Gobert (15.9)
KEY LOSSES: F/C Derrick Favors, G Ricky Rubio, F Jae Crowder, G Kyle Korver.
KEY ADDITIONS: Conley, Bogdanovic, F Jeff Green, C Ed Davis, G Emmanuel Mudiay.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: All eyes will be on Mitchell to see if he can emerge as a true All-Star this season. The third-year guard, who averaged at least 20 points in each of his first two seasons, won't have to shoulder as big of a load in creating the offense with Conley now sharing the backcourt. Gobert is a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and will anchor one of the league's best defenses again. He posted career-highs in points (15.9) and rebounds (12.9) per game a year ago. Bogdanovic adds a valuable shooter on the wing with Ingles that should give the Jazz an improved outside scoring punch. He shot a career-high 42.5 percent from 3-point range last season.
OUTLOOK: The Jazz are well positioned to take a step forward and become a Western Conference title contender. Conley gives Utah a veteran point guard who is a legit scoring threat in addition to a strong passer. Bogdanovic and Green will also shore up shooting and help Conley take away some of the pressure from Ingles and Mitchell to get it all done on offense. Utah's fortunes, ultimately, will rise and fall on the continued progression of the central star duo of Mitchell and Gobert. If the Jazz offense can catch up to the team's elite defense this season, few teams will be able hang with Utah as the season progresses.
PREVIEW
Jazz to test mettle vs. Doncic, Mavericks

The Utah Jazz have climbed the ladder over the past two months to emerge as one of the NBA's best teams. They have done it by dominating opponents on both ends of the court.

Now the Jazz face one of their biggest tests against an equally tough Dallas team when the Mavericks visit Salt Lake City on Saturday.

In winning 18 of their last 20 games to move into second place in the Western Conference, the Jazz have found ways to overwhelm one opponent after another. Their last three victories have come by an average margin of 28.3 points.

Utah earned its most lopsided victory of the season, defeating the Golden State Warriors 129-96 on Wednesday. The Jazz dismantled the Warriors, making 17 3-pointers and finishing with 19 more rebounds.

"We come out every night with a high level of focus," Jazz center Rudy Gobert told the team's website. "Everyone comes with the same intensity. A lot of guys can put the ball in the basket. When we move the ball like that and find the open shots, we're very hard to guard."

Gobert has led the charge behind a significant uptick in offensive production coupled with his usual elite defense.

The 27-year-old is averaging 17.7 points, 15.2 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in January. In addition, Gobert has averaged 21.7 points over his last six games and he has shot 60 percent or better from the field in each of his last eight.

Much of Gobert's effectiveness starts with his willingness to do little things to get teammates going. He is one the best in the league in creating screen assists. His energy in locking down on the defensive end also gives them confidence that they can do their jobs.

"Whenever you can find a guy of Rudy's caliber that wants to do the little things because he loves winning, those things are immeasurable," Jazz forward Georges Niang said.

Luka Doncic has had a similar profound impact on Dallas emerging as a contender in the Western Conference. The Mavericks have rebuilt quickly with him at the controls. They have won five of six and are three games behind Utah in the Western Conference standings.

Doncic has elevated his game beyond what he showed a season ago, when he captured NBA Rookie of the Year honors. He leads the Mavericks in scoring (29.1 points per game), rebounding (9.6) and assists (9.0).

That's a big reason why he earned a nod as a starter in the upcoming NBA All-Star Game. Doncic is the first Dallas player to start in an All-Star Game since Dirk Nowitzki in 2010.

"He attracts a lot of attention all the time," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle told the team's website. "But I love the way he handles it. He's interested in his teammates. He's interested in winning. He continues to learn on the floor. He's learned a lot about running a team and making decisions about play calls and things like that."

Saturday's contest is the second in a three-game road swing for Dallas. The Mavericks started the trip with a 133-125 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday.
