KEY GAME INFORMATION
MIAMI: Despite head coach Adam Gase's fondness for the passing game, RB Jay Ajayi was too productive last year to keep the ball out of his hands this season. Ryan Tannehill remains a middling QB, too good to replace, but not good enough to lead a deep playoff run. Newly-acquired TE Julius Thomas gives Tannehill another weapon to go along with deep threat WR Kenny Stills, run-and-catch expert WR Jarvis Landry and inconsistent-but-talented WR DeVante Parker. Miami's defense ranked 29th overall and gave up the second most yards per carry last year. DT Ndamukong Suh is still a beast, and the LB corps should be improved with the addition of longtime Steeler Lawrence Timmons and second-round draft pick Raekwon McMillan. Edge-rusher Cameron Wake can still bring pressure in a part-time role, and first-round draft pick Charles Harris is his new understudy.
PHILADELPHIA: Asked to do too much as a rookie, Carson Wentz looked the part of a franchise QB at times. His supporting cast is drastically improved with the addition of WRs Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, and the O-line is solid when intact. Beefy RB LeGarrette Blount's power running can take some of the pressure off Wentz, while RBs Darren Sproles and rookie Donnel Pumphrey are dynamic after-the-catch playmakers in space. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz's unit faded after a strong start to 2016. This offseason, the loaded defensive line added DT Timmy Jernigan, DE Chris Long and first-round draft pick DE Derek Barnett. S Malcolm Jenkins can stuff the run and hold his own in coverage, but cornerback is a huge area of concern for Philly after losing both starters from a problematic group last season. A collection of uninspiring options will rotate at CB this season.
