| | | NASHVILLE: LAST SEASON: 53-18-11, 117 points. Won first Presidents' Trophy. LOST Game 7 to Winnipeg Jets in Western Conference semifinals.
COACH: Peter Laviolette (fifth season, 17th NHL season).
ADDED: D Dan Hamhuis. LOST: C Mike Fisher, F Scott Hartnell, D Alexei Emelin.
PLAYER TO WATCH: G Pekka Rinne. He turns 36 in November and is in the final year of his current contract coming off a season where he won the Vezina Trophy after being a finalist three other times. Rinne carried the Predators to their first Presidents' Trophy going 42-13-4 with eight shutouts, a 2.31 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage. He also earned his 300th career victory on Feb. 22.
OUTLOOK: The Predators' goal remains winning the Stanley Cup that has eluded them the past two seasons after a loss in the Stanley Cup Final followed by a Game 7 loss to the Winnipeg Jets in the Western Conference semifinals. They kept their core together with their biggest offseason moves signing defenseman Ryan Ellis, backup goalie Juuse Saros, forward Ryan Hartman to extensions. Nashville is expecting more growth from center Ryan Johansen, forwards Filip Forsberg, Viktor Arvidsson, Kevin Fiala and rookie Eeli Tolvanen to keep the Predators competitive in the deep Western Conference. | | MINNESOTA: LAST SEASON: 45-26-11, 101 points. Third in Central Division. LOST to Winnipeg Jets in Western Conference quarterfinals.
COACH: Bruce Boudreau (third season, 12th NHL season).
ADDED: RW J.T. Brown, C Eric Fehr, C Matt Hendricks, RW Matt Read, D Greg Pateryn, D Matt Bartkowski.
LOST: C Matt Cullen, LW Tyler Ennis, RW Daniel Winnik.
PLAYER TO WATCH: LW Zach Parise. After missing the first 39 games because of a lower back problem that required surgery, Parise's delayed start was predictably slow. He scored 12 goals in his last 18 games of the regular season, though, and scored in each of the first three playoff games until being knocked out of action again by a broken sternum. Parise, who's entering his 14th NHL season at age 34, isn't built to be the team's premier scorer but needs to replicate that productivity down the stretch to help keep the offense balanced.
OUTLOOK: New GM Paul Fenton made only minor moves this summer for fresh faces on the fourth line and more depth on defense, so the Wild will rely on the same core that has been bounced out of the playoffs in the first round three straight times and won only two series over the last six years. Just reaching the postseason again in the rugged Western Conference would be an accomplishment in itself, and Boudreau has as strong of an 82-game track record as any bench boss in the league. Parise and defenseman Ryan Suter, who's coming off a serious ankle injury that kept him out of the playoffs, must stay healthy throughout the seventh year of their identical $98 million megadeals. Wings Charlie Coyle and Nino Niederreiter also have to bounce back from down seasons. |
| | Wild host Predators with no margin for error
The gap between the Minnesota Wild and a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs isn't insurmountable. The margin for error, however, has nearly disappeared. As the Wild (35-32-9) ready to host the Nashville Predators Monday night, they are coming off a disappointing 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday that dropped them out of a wild card spot. With six games remaining in the season - all but one against teams outside of a playoff position heading into Sunday's action, and the other being the Arizona Coyotes - the Wild are sputtering with just two wins in eight games (2-5-1). "At this stage I firmly believe we have to win four out of six to have a shot at this," Wild coach Bruce Boudreau said after his team's loss in Carolina. "Again, just take it one game at a time and hopefully with the day of rest (Sunday), and then it's not easy facing Nashville, but if we come up with something solid hopefully that will lead us through to the next week." The loss in Carolina came one night after a crucial 2-1 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals, but they weren't able to build off it. "We know where we're at. Every game is huge and are desperate points," forward Eric Staal said. "Coming off a big game (Saturday) night, we were hoping for a great weekend and a big result, but that's a team (Carolina) that's desperate as well. They're playing really well. They've played well for a long time since December." Nashville (42-28-6) is on the verge of clinching a playoff spot, but the Predators are not feeling high these days, either. They were trounced 5-0 by the Winnipeg Jets Saturday night, a defeat that leaves them four points behind Winnipeg for top spot in the Central Division and only two points ahead of the St. Louis Blues - who also have a game in hand and lead in the first tiebreaker. Nashville has dropped two straight games - falling via shootout to Pittsburgh on Thursday - and failing to rebound with a better effort against the Jets was summed up repeatedly with the word "disappointing". "Biggest game of the year up to this point," captain Roman Josi said. "They were just better than us. Disappointing. "They were just better than us the whole game," Josi added. "It's really disappointing that we played like that for such a big game. It was a big game for both teams, and we just didn't play well enough." "The first period we played really well," head coach Peter Laviolette said. "We had the edge just with what we were trying to do. I thought we were sharp and on point, and then the next 40 turned and we weren't good at all." On top of it all, the Wild are on pins and needles regarding the status of Zach Parise going forward. Parise, who leads the team in goals (26) and points (59), missed the Carolina game. He suffered a lower-body injury against the Capitals on Friday when hit by Tom Wilson. He remained in the game and set up the decisive goal in the victory, but was unable to Saturday. --Field Level Media |
