Manager: John Gibbons (10th season)
Who's new? 1B/DH Kendrys Morales, C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, IF/OF Steve Pearce, IF Lourdes Gurriel, LHP J.P. Howell, RHP Joe Smith
Who's gone? 1B/DH Edwin Encarnacion, OF Michael Saunders, C Josh Thole, C Dioner Navarro, OF Junior Lake, RHP R.A. Dickey, LHP Brett Cecil, RHP Joaquin Benoit
Projected lineup: 2B Devon Travis (.300, 11 HR, 50 RBI), 3B Josh Donaldson (.284, 37, 99), RF Jose Bautista (.234, 22, 69), DH Kendrys Morales (.263, 30, 93 with Royals), SS Troy Tulowitzki (.254, 24, 79), C Russell Martin (.231, 20, 74), 1B Justin Smoak (.217, 14, 34), CF Kevin Pillar (.266, 7, 53, 14 SB), LF Ezequiel Carrera (.248, 6, 23)
Rotation: RH Marco Estrada (9-9, 3.48 ERA), LH J.A. Happ (20-4, 3.18), RH Marcus Stroman (9-10, 4.37), RH Aaron Sanchez (15-2, 3.00), LH Francisco Liriano (8-13, 4.69 with Pirates and Blue Jays)
Key relievers: RH Roberto Osuna (4-3, 2.68, 36/42 SV), RH Jason Grilli (6-4, 3.64), RH Joe Biagini (4-3, 3.06), LH J.P. Howell (1-1, 4.09 with Dodgers), RH Joe Smith (1-4, 3.82 with Angels), LH Aaron Loup (0-0, 5.02)
Hot spots: bullpen. The Blue Jays signed only a couple high-profile free agents (retaining Bautista, adding Morales) and brought in many lower-profile veterans mostly to compete for bullpen jobs. Howell and Smith, signed to low-risk deals, are all but guaranteed jobs. But what of Dominic Leone, Mat Latos, Mike Bolsinger, Lucas Harrell and Leonel Campos? Toronto seems to be crowd-sourcing its middle innings with low-risk, right-handed options. Up to a half-dozen pitchers could be competing for one or two jobs.
Outlook: The Blue Jays' roster is enviably balanced, albeit among the older ones in the league. Toronto led the AL in ERA last year. Their entire starting rotation returns, and their veteran bullpen is set up well to support second-year closer Osuna. Ironically, the youngest player in the Jays' starting lineup, 26-year-old Travis, has the biggest health concern of the bunch. He didn't appear in a spring training game until recently because of offseason knee surgery. Encarnacion, who was good for .270/30/100 every year, will be missed. The question now is whether Morales (33), Bautista (36), Tulowitzki (32) and Martin (34) are still close enough to their primes to power another playoff run. | | CHICAGO CUBS: 2016: 103-58, won World Series
Manager: Joe Maddon (third season)
Who's new? OF Jon Jay, RHP Wade Davis, LHP Brett Anderson, RHP Koji Uehara, LHP Brian Duensing, RHP Eddie Butler
Who's gone? OF Dexter Fowler, IF/OF Jorge Soler, LHP Aroldis Chapman, LHP Travis Wood, RHP Trevor Cahill, RHP Jason Hammel
Projected lineup: LF Kyle Schwarber (.000, 0 HR, 0 RBI in two games), 3B Kris Bryant (.292, 39, 102), 1B Anthony Rizzo (.292, 32, 109), 2B Ben Zobrist (.272, 18, 76), SS Addison Russell (.238, 21, 95), RF Jason Heyward (.230, 7, 49, 11 SB), C Willson Contreras (.282, 12, 35), CF Jon Jay (.291, 2, 26 with Padres) or Albert Almora (.277, 3, 14 in 47 games)
Rotation: LH Jon Lester (19-5, 2.44 ERA), RH Jake Arrieta (18-8, 3.10), RH Kyle Hendricks (16-8, 2.13), RH John Lackey (11-8, 3.35), LH Brett Anderson (1-2, 11.91 in four games with Dodgers) or LH Mike Montgomery (4-5, 2.52 with Mariners and Cubs) or RH Eddie Butler (2-5, 7.17 with Rockies) or LH Rob Zastryzny (1-0, 1.13 ERA in eight games) or RH Alec Mills (0-0, 13.50 in three games with Royals)
Key relievers: RH Wade Davis (2-1, 1.87, 27/30 SV with Royals), RH Pedro Strop (2-2, 2.85), RH Hector Rondon (2-3, 3.53, 18/23 SV), RH Koji Uehara (2-3, 3.45, 7/9 SV with Red Sox), RH Carl Edwards Jr. (0-1, 3.75), RH Justin Grimm (2-1, 4.10), LH Brian Duensing (1-0, 4.05 with Royals)
Hot spots: Fifth Starter. Of all the candidates vying to replace Hammel, who signed with Kansas City as a free agent, most have plenty of upside but didn't log many innings last year. That includes Anderson, who had one productive season and one unproductive season for the Dodgers. Keep an eye on southpaw Montgomery, who tossed two shutouts as a starter for the Mariners in 2015, came to the Cubs last year in a midseason trade, then was effective as a reliever. Last time he was on the mound, he recorded the save in Game 7 of the World Series.
Outlook: There hasn't been a back-to-back champion this century. For opponents of the Cubs, that might be the most tangible nugget of hope. Most of the key players return from a powerhouse team that played historically good defense, got no fewer than 165 innings from each of its top five starters, and featured a deep lineup led by NL MVP Kris Bryant. In the bullpen, two-time All-Star Davis is capable of replacing closer Chapman if he's healthy. Among the Cubs' regular position players, only Zobrist and new center fielder Jay are over 30 ' everyone else is either entering or in the midst of his prime. This is a strong outlook. |
| | Blue Jays turn to Tepesch to try to tip scales vs. Cubs
CHICAGO -- Nick Tepesch doesn't have much of a major league track record this season with just three appearances with two teams since May. But the right-hander could make a case for sticking around with the Toronto Blue Jays with a solid performance in Saturday's interleague game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Tepesch (1-2, 5.25 ERA) was traded to Toronto from the Minnesota Twins in late July for cash considerations. He had been sidelined since late May with a right elbow injury. He was pounded in his first start against the New York Yankees, allowing five runs and eight hits in an 11-5 Blue Jays loss on Aug. 9. But Tepesch bounced back five days later with a quality start against Tampa Bay, allowing just one run on four hits while walking four per six innings in Toronto's 2-1 victory. "His command was a little bit better, he stayed on the attack, we got some breaks, we ran some balls down, and he hung in there," Toronto manager John Gibbons told reporters. "We had a depleted bullpen and he gave us just what we needed." Toronto (59-63) seeks to even the weekend interleague series with Chicago after the Cubs claimed a 7-4 victory in Friday's opener. Tepesch and the Blue Jays will go against Cubs left-hander Jose Quintana (3-2, 3.86 ERA) in the series' middle game. Quintana has been up and down since arriving in a trade with the Chicago White Sox as he approaches his seventh start with the Cubs and 25th of the season. In his last outing -- a 15-5 Cubs win over Cincinnati on Aug. 14 -- he worked five inning and allowed two runs and four hits while striking out four and walking four. Quintana will make his 10th career start against the Blue Jays and has pitched at least six innings in all nine previous outings, posting a 1.77 ERA. "I'm just trying to do my job and hit my spots," Quintana told reporters after Monday's win over the Reds. "Things are a little new for me here, but I feel pretty good, so no pressure on me. "The game doesn't change. You go to a different league, but it's the same. I try to use my strengths. I'm really happy with this outing because I needed that." While with the White Sox this season, Quintana went 4-8 with a 4.49 ERA in 18 starts. Saturday'' interleague game will be only the fifth the Blue Jays have played at Wrigley Field. Until Friday, Toronto had not been to the North Side ballpark since June 6-8, 2005. Friday's crowd of 41,814 included a healthy contingent of Blue Jays fans, with a large group also expected for the final two games. The Blue Jays hold an 8-5 edge in games played at Wrigley Field and the Rogers Centre. The Cubs are 8-1 in their last nine interleague games and are now 9-7 overall against American League teams. |
