| | | PITTSBURGH: 2016: 78-83, third place
Manager: Clint Hurdle (seventh season)
Who's new? RHP Daniel Hudson, IF Phil Gosselin
Who's gone? IF Sean Rodriguez, OF Matt Joyce, SP Jeff Locke, SP Ryan Vogelsong, RP Neftali Feliz, C Eric Fryer
Projected lineup: 2B Josh Harrison (.283, 4 HR, 59 RBI, 19 SB), 1B Josh Bell (.273, 3, 19), RF Andrew McCutchen (.256, 24, 79), CF Starling Marte (.311, 9, 46, 47 SB), LF Gregory Polanco (.258, 22, 86), 3B Jung-ho Kang (.255, 21, 62), C Francisco Cervelli (.264, 1, 33), SS Jordy Mercer (.256, 11, 59)
Rotation: RH Gerrit Cole (7-10, 3.88 ERA), RH Ivan Nova (12-8, 4.17 for Yankees and Pirates), RH Jameson Taillon (5-4, 3.38), RH Chad Kuhl (5-4, 4.20), RH Drew Hutchison (1-0, 5.25 with Blue Jays and Pirates) or Steven Brault (0-3, 4.86) or Trevor Williams (1-1, 7.82) or Tyler Glasnow (0-2, 4.24)
Key relievers: LH Tony Watson (2-5, 3.06, 15/20 SV), RH Daniel Hudson (3-2, 5.22 with Diamondbacks), LH Felipe Rivero (1-6, 4.09 for Nationals and Pirates), RH Juan Nicasio (10-7, 4.50), LH Antonio Bastardo (3-0, 4.52 with Mets and Pirates), RH Jared Hughes (1-1, 3.03), LH Wade LeBlanc (4-0, 3.77 with Mariners and Pirates)
Hot spots: Rotation and closer. Right-hander Glasnow, 23, is a consensus top-25 prospect who made his major league debut last year. The Pirates would love to see him seize the fifth starter's job in camp, but right-hander Hutchison offers a more experienced option if Glasnow isn't ready. Watson became the closer after Mark Melancon was traded to Washington last summer, but his sinker/slider/changeup mix isn't typical ninth-inning stuff. Keep an eye on Rivero, a 25-year-old lefty acquired in the Melancon trade. His fastball actually gained velocity as last season wore on, eventually touching triple digits. Rivero might begin the season as the set-up man but his ascension to the ninth inning seems inevitable.
Outlook: The Pirates made some interesting tweaks after missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. They made no major trades, signed only two major league free agents (pitchers Nova and Hudson) and revamped Hurdle's coaching staff. They also moved their outfielders around: McCutchen goes from center to right, Marte from left to center, and Polanco from right to left. McCutchen is coming off the worst season of his career. So is ace right-hander Cole. The path back to the playoffs begins with the two stars bouncing back. If the team's other homegrown talent ' Taillon, Glasnow, Bell and Polanco ' continue their evolution, Pittsburgh should return to the postseason in 2017. | | COLORADO: 2016: 75-87, third place
Manager: Bud Black (first season)
Who's new? 1B Ian Desmond, IF Alexi Amarista, RHP Greg Holland, LHP Mike Dunn
Who's gone? Manager Walt Weiss, LHP Jorge De La Rosa, RHP Eddie Butler, LHP Boone Logan, C Nick Hundley, IF Daniel Descalso, OF Ryan Raburn
Projected lineup: CF Charlie Blackmon (.324, 29 HR, 82 RBI, 17 SB), 2B D.J. LeMahieu (.348, 11, 66, 11), 3B Nolan Arenado (.294, 41, 133), RF Carlos Gonzalez (.298, 25, 100), 1B Mark Reynolds (.282, 14, 53), LF David Dahl (.315, 7, 24) or Gerardo Parra (.253, 7, 39), SS Trevor Story (.272, 27, 72), C Tony Wolters (.259, 3, 30)
Rotation: RH Jon Gray (10-10, 4.61 ERA), RH Tyler Chatwood (12-9, 3.87), LH Tyler Anderson (5-6, 3.54), LH Kyle Freeland (6-3, 3.91 at Triple-A), RH German Marquez (1-1, 5.23)
Key relievers: Greg Holland (did not pitch in 2016), Adam Ottavino (1-3, 2.67, 7/12 SV), Mike Dunn (6-1, 3.40, 4/8 SV with Marlins), Jake McGee (2-3, 4.73, 15/19 SV), Jordan Lyles (4-5, 5.83), Chad Qualls (2-0, 5.23), Chris Rusin (3-5, 3.74), Carlos Estevez (3-7, 5.24, 11/18 SV)
Hot spots: Catcher and closer. Wolters was 23 years old and hadn't played a game above Double-A last year when the Rockies claimed him off waivers from Cleveland. Now he's the most experienced catcher on the Rockies' 40-man roster, having played 71 major league games. A pitch-framing specialist with rare agility behind the plate, Wolters must coax pitchers through Coors Field and its occasional malefactions. While Colorado's rotation is the best it's looked in years, the ninth inning could be an adventure. Seven pitchers recorded a save for the Rockies in 2016. Now, a man who hasn't thrown a competitive pitch since 2015 might be their best option. Holland, 31, saved 125 games for the Royals from 2013-15 before elbow surgery paused his career. Ottavino will close if Holland can't.
Outlook: The Rockies probably won't catch the Dodgers or Giants this season, but a .500 record or better would be a big boost for their rebuilding movement. Black skippered the Padres from 2007-15, then spent last year in the Angels' front office. His first task: keeping morale steady after a spate of injuries and illness struck the clubhouse. The Rockies' biggest offseason acquisition was veteran Desmond, but he'll miss the beginning of the season with a fractured hand. Pitcher Chad Bettis, who led the Rockies with 32 starts last year, is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for testicular cancer. Backup catcher Tom Murphy (hairline fracture in forearm) and outfielder Dahl (ribs) could also start the season on the DL. If they can get past these early hurdles, the Rockies will be competitive at worst and dangerous at best. |
| | Surging Pirates start extended trip in Colorado
The surging Pirates and the rejuvenated Rockies will begin a three-game series Friday that will wind up Colorado's homestand and launch Pittsburgh's long road trip. Jeff Hoffman (6-1, 4.33 ERA) will start for the Rockies and be opposed by Trevor Williams (3-4, 4.69). The Pirates, coming off a four-game sweep of Milwaukee, have won a season-high five straight games, eight of their past nine and 11 of their past 13. Since the All-Star break, the Pirates have won three games in the ninth inning or later. During their winning streak, the Pirates have scored four runs four times and three runs once, winning three games by one run and one game by two. Pittsburgh's four-game sweep of the Brewers was its first four-game sweep from any team at PNC Park since July 29-31, 2013, against St. Louis. The Pirates' 34-26 record since May 13 is the best among National League Central teams. A 4-2 win over the Brewers on Thursday enabled the Pirates (49-49) to get back to .500 for the first time since April 16 (6-6). "I think it's another mile marker on the way," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "You've got to play better than .500. Nobody's won a division playing under .500. There will be no catching our breath or, 'Ah, we've made it.' We haven't made it. We're heading in the right direction. We're hunting the good stuff. We're playing better baseball." The Pirates on Friday will try go above .500 for the first time since they were 3-2 on April 9. They have won five of their past six games on the road and are 4-1-3 in their last eight series away from home since being swept in Los Angeles, May 8-10, by the Dodgers. The Pirates, who are 21-25 on the road, are beginning a nine-game, 10-day trip that will also take them to San Francisco and San Diego. Williams, who has never faced the Rockies, gave up 10 hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings against St. Louis on Sunday as the Pirates won 4-3. The Pirates are 6-7 in games started by Williams, who went into the rotation May 8 and gave up eight runs (six earned) in three innings at the Dodgers. In 12 starts since that game, Williams is 2-2 with a 3.95 ERA. Hoffman won his last start Sunday at the New York Mets, allowing four runs in six innings in the Rockies' 13-4 romp. The Rockies are 7-3 in games started by Hoffman, who has pitched seven innings in his past two starts at Coors Field, going 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA. The Pirates series will conclude the Rockies' six-game homestand that began with a three-game sweep of San Diego, improving Colorado's home record to 29-18. The Rockies had lost 15 of 20 games after stumbling out of the All-Star break and losing 14-2 and 9-3 to the Mets before winning Sunday. During their four-game winning streak, the Rockies have outscored opponents 49-21. On Thursday, the Rockies scored 18 runs, their most since scoring 18 on April 27, 2012, against the Mets. They pounded 21 hits, their most since they had 21 on Sept. 17, 2014, against the Dodgers. "The last game in New York, I thought was a really good game as far as the at-bats," Rockies manager Bud Black said. "We got beat pretty soundly those first two games, didn't pitch well. Our guys came out Sunday morning on a mission. I think that's just been carrying over; I really do." |
