Key relievers: LH Zach Britton (2-1, 0.54, 47/47 SV), RH Brad Brach (10-4, 2.05), RH Darren O'Day (3-1, 3.77), RH Mychal Givens (8-2, 3.13), LH Donnie Hart (0-0, 0.49), LH Vidal Nuno (1-1, 3.53 with Mariners)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and bullpen. A shoulder injury in camp left 16-game winner Chris Tillman in doubt for opening day. That opened the floodgates for a pair of competitions that are somewhat intertwined, since the Orioles value long relievers more than perhaps any team. Wright and Wilson, who shuttled between the bullpen and the rotation last season, are the top candidates for the final rotation job. Aquino is a candidate to start or relieve. Logan Verrett, Richard Bleier and Zach Stewart are all potential long men. Keep an eye on Lee, a 24-year-old lefty who missed most of last season with a lat strain.
Outlook: Boston landed the biggest trade chip of the winter and Baltimore couldn't (or didn't try to) acquire the number-one starter it badly needed. When the dust settled, the Orioles look like another 80-something win team that will lean on its organizational depth to overachieve. Machado is already one of the five best players in the game, and at 24 his prime years might still lie ahead. Only three teams in history have had three 40-home run hitters, but Machado, Davis and Trumbo are capable of making it four. Expect some high-scoring games: the Orioles' outfield earned low marks on defense last year, while their starting rotation is iffy at best. Bridging the gap to closer Britton will be key. | | OAKLAND: 2016: 69-93, fifth place
Manager: Bob Melvin (seventh season)
Who's new? CF Rajai Davis, OF Matt Joyce, 3B Trevor Plouffe, IF Adam Rosales, RHP Santiago Casilla
Who's gone? IF/OF Danny Valencia, OF Brett Eibner, 2B Eric Sogard, 2B Tyler Ladendorf, LHP Dillon Overton, RHP Fernando Rodriguez
Projected lineup: CF Rajai Davis (.249, 12 HR, 48 RBI, 43 SB with Indians), C Stephen Vogt (.251, 14, 56), DH Ryon Healy (.305, 13, 37 in 72 games), LF Khris Davis (.247, 42, 102), RF Matt Joyce (.242, 13, 42 with Pirates) or Mark Canha (.122, 3, 6 in 16 games), SS Marcus Semien (.238, 27, 75, 10 SB), 3B Trevor Plouffe (.260, 12, 47 with Twins), 1B Yonder Alonso (.253, 7, 56), 2B Jed Lowrie (.263, 2, 27 in 87 games)
Rotation: RH Kendall Graveman (10-11, 4.11), LH Sean Manaea (7-9, 3.86), RH Jharel Cotton (2-0, 2.15 in five games), RH Andrew Triggs (1-1, 4.31), RH Jesse Hahn (2-4, 6.02 in nine games) and Frankie Montas (0-0, 2.38 in four games at Triple-A)
Key relievers: RH Ryan Madson (6-7, 3.62, 30/37 SV), LH Sean Doolittle (2-3, 3.23), RH Santiago Casilla (2-5, 3.57 with Giants), RH Ryan Dull (5-5, 2.42), RH John Axford (6-4, 3.97), RH Liam Hendriks (0-4, 3.76), LH Daniel Coulombe (3-1, 4.53)
Hot spots: Fifth Starter and Second Base. Triggs, Hahn and Montas are the top candidates to fill out the rotation. Montas, who turns 24 before the season, is the youngest and has the highest ceiling. Hahn is the only one with something resembling a track record of success in the majors. Triggs showed potential in five starts last year. Second base will belong to prospect Franklin Barreto at some point. For now the position belongs to Lowrie, who figures to become trade bait as the A's begin their annual migration toward mathematical elimination.
Outlook: It's been a long two years since the A's played postseason baseball. Rather than rebuilding outright, the A's spent their offseason stocking up on veteran position players. Their strength is a young rotation led by right-hander Sonny Gray ' another trade candidate who's coming off the worst of his four major league seasons (5-11, 5.69 ERA) and will miss time with a lat strain. If Cotton, Manaea and Triggs pick up where they left off, pitching won't be the problem. No team scored fewer runs than the A's in 2016, and it still isn't obvious that their lineup improved. Their home turf will be renamed in honor of Rickey Henderson when the Angels visit Oakland for the opener; maybe Rickey can hit leadoff, too. |
| | Orioles' Bundy faces Athletics with three-game winning streak
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Baltimore Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy made some personal history Monday in his last start, a 6-2 victory against the Los Angeles Angels. Bundy had double-digit strikeouts for the first time in his major league career, in his 36th start and 60th appearance. Bundy struck out 10 and, for the third time this season, walked none. He allowed two runs and five hits over seven innings to win his third straight decision. Bundy will try to match his season-high winning streak Saturday night against the Oakland Athletics at the Oakland Coliseum in the third game in a four-game series that's tied 1-1. Bundy gave much of the credit for his double-digit strikeouts to a heavy dose of quality sliders. "I think it was probably mostly the slider," Bundy said before the A's 5-4 comeback win Friday night. "And then also the four-seam (fastball) playing up, throwing it higher in the zone on occasion, made the slider play even better." In his past four starts, Bundy is 3-0 with a 3.42 ERA, 23 strikeouts and five walks over 26 1/3 innings. He allowed four home runs during that four-start stretch and 22 for the season, but only one over his past two games. Bundy is 11-8 with a 4.15 ERA and 22 starts and will start against Oakland for the first time in his career. He pitched two scoreless innings in relief against the A's at Camden Yards. "I feel great., healthy," Bundy said. "Body feels great, arm's great. Just trying to learn every single day as much as I can and get better every start out." A's left-hander Sean Manaea (8-6, 4.15) will try to snap out of a two-game skid when he makes his 25th start and 26th appearance of the season. In his past two starts against San Francisco and the Angels, he' s 0-1 with a 9.95 ERA, three walks, two strikeouts and three home runs in 6 1/3 innings. Manaea lasted three innings against the Giants and 3 1/3 against the Angels. In his previous 14 starts, Manaea pitched at least five innings every time. "He wants to perform a little better than he has the last couple times out, but he's pretty unique as a younger guy," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "It never really looks like he's frantic about anything. He's always pretty calm and exudes that out on the mound, too. "It's all about working to get back to where he was a couple weeks ago. And given the extra day (of rest) I think will help too." Manaea will pitch off five days rest instead of his typical four. "You can get a little tired," Melvin said after Manaea's last start in Anaheim. "The (velocity) is not as high as it's been all year. He feels fine. The innings are starting to mount. It's just a tough patch for him." Manaea has thrown 144 2/3 innings, matching his total for the A's last year in his first big-league season. He has yet to face the Orioles in his career. The Orioles blew a 4-3 eighth inning lead Friday night and fell two games below .500 at 57-59. They trail Minnesota by two games for the second wild-card spot in the American League. If they had defeated the A's, who are in last place in the AL West, the Orioles would be just one game behind the Twins. |
